JJ Watt's next contract

Texian

Hall of Fame
There has been much talk and a lot of speculation about what it will take to sign JJ Watt. The closest apple to apple comparison that I could find is Reggie White's 2nd contract as free agent in 1993. That was 20 years ago.

At this point today JJ Watt compares very favorably to Reggie White. After Reggie signed with Green Bay there were only two players that were making more than Reggie. They were John Elway and Dan Marino.

The thought of that is likely to scare many of you and some may not sleep and for that I'm truly sorry. I can only think that JJ's agent sees the handing writing on the wall and he too will also make a JJ Watt = Reggie White comparison. If JJ continues on as a man among boys, when all is said and done, JJ too, will get paid like Reggie White.

Under the new CBA the Texans hold the rights to a 5th year. The Texans also have at their disposal two Franchise Tags which in today's $$ would be worth $13 - $15 million per year (2016 &17). The Texans could also tag Watt a 3rd time but his tag number would be equal to the Quarterback Franchise amount in the 3rd year which in today's $$ would be approx $25 million for the year (2018). And then it would be 2019.

Based on the language of the CBA, there’s an argument to be made that no player may ever be tagged more than three times during the course of his career.

"White became the third-highest paid player in league history, trailing only Denver quarterback John Elway ($4.75 million) and Miami quarterback Dan Marino ($4.43 million). http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/191927631.html

So he's still in year 3 of 4 of his rookie contract and the team can exercise the 5th year:
For the option to come into play, the team must give the player written notice after the final game of his third season but before May 3 of the next league year.

Hoping for Geno Atkins money, expecting Mario Williams money, dreading Scrooge McDuck money.

lets see how he plays this year we still got two years right or a year and a half

u think Watt agent will want a New contract or extension in year 3

or just wait for the big one after 4 years ..????

So, does this work like a franchise tag, where once you exercise this 5th year option, you can still sign a long term extension that includes that year?

I have 0 doubt the Texans will use the 5th year option if a deal can't be agreed to. The fact that they have that option will also give them some leverage in what the number for that year will be if a deal is reached.

Let's hope that JJ is a reasonable man who wants to win as much as he wants to earn what he's worth and signs a reasonable deal instead of a record setting one.

JJ just needs another Pro-Bowl type season, and I believe he'll get extended before next season starts as the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. Exercising the 5th year option, or any tagging will be not done... The FO will not want to take any chances in losing him to FA. They'll lock him up as soon as they can.

Just my opinion, no facts to back it up. JJ has it all, in terms of dominance on the field, and being marketable off the field. These type of guys don't come along often.

If JJ has another year like the last one he may have to sign with two teams it will take the salary cap of two teams to pay the man.

Will be celebrated thusly

there wont be any drama when it comes to contracts.
expect class all around from all parties concerned.

manziel on the other hand..

If he duplicates the year he had then he'll get the bank. If he surpasses the year he had he'll get a blank check.

If he has a normal "Elite" year...then maybe maybe we'll get him at Atkins money. But we have to realize he had a pretty epic year last season, almost historic. If he does that twice he's going to get whatever he wants I imagine.

Why don't we discuss DeAndre Hopkins and all the other rookies' next contracts as well since they will need to be re-signed at the same time?

All I know is whatever the number is on his next contract the resulting pile of cash will be visible from space.

Wait!..... I just had a thought. Astrodome repurposed as vault to hold JJ Watt's "Scrooge McDuck" money pile. He could go swimming in it for exercise during the off season.

?? Hopkins under contract next 4 seasons, Watt is up after 2014. If you are trying to say others are also up when Watt is and cannot be forgotten, I agree. Notables are KJ (2014 club option), Brooks Reed, Derek Newton, Brandon Harris, Yates, Keenum and Pleasant. This season will allow each to show their worth. It might be interesting to see how the two back up QBs expiring at same time will be dealt with.

After this 2013 season: Antonio Smith, Wade Smith, OD, (all of which I think will be allowed to leave)Joe Mays, Greg Jones, Tate, Mitchell, Ryan Harris (maybe more significant than many think).

Jean, Brahman and Terrell McClain are RFA but still play into it.

A. Smith $9.5 m + Wade Smith's $3.75 m + Watt's $3.6 m should take care of JJ.

According to Spotrac.Com, the Texans already exercise the option on KJax.
They paid him a good chunk of money in 2011 to obtain that right.

I chuckle at the recent remark about how KJax was still not good in his second year when I saw that.

Wade: That boy is not any good.
Smith: So what; I'll pick up the option on his extra year anyway. What you're gonna do about it?
Wade: Darn you Smith; I guess I'll just have to teach him to turn his head around then.

Not that simple, you also have to take in to account that Schaub, Joseph, Johnson, Brown, Cushing contracts will also escalate in 2014. In Addition there will be 15 free agents to be resigned or replaced.

I use Spotrac and Overthecap to work out an estimate.
With the rollover available, plus the money available on Wade Smith, the Texans should have about $14M to account for Watt's extention.

That includes taking care of everybody else.

There are other options that can help even if my calculation is off.
They can restructure JJo for example.
Antonio Smith, if he stays, should see a reduction on his salary.

Beyond 2014, they can either restructure or extend Schaub, or cut him outright.

I don't see any problem with cap space.

There is a team option for a 5th year on Watt's rookie contract. That is 2015. They then can franchise him twice (actually 3 times but the last would be really expensive - well actually not since it is in the realm of what folks like the OP are projecting for him).

I agree that your $14 mil is in the ballpark. You also have to take into account, that right now, today, the 2014 roster only has 40 players under contract so part of that $14 mil will be needed to sign 13 players to fill out the 53 man roster. According to my calculations the start of the 2014 year will be much like 2013 if not a little bit worse. The Texans once again are likely to start the 2014 season as one of the 5 teams with the worst cap space.

I did take into consideration the 51 roster spots required under salary cap rules.

Cap space, imo, has to go hand in hand with talent level.

The Colts, for example, started this off-season with mucho cap room, but IMO, didn't spend it wisely enough. I think they underutilized it.

Today the Texans only have 38 players under contract to start the 2014 season (minus 15 FA). Those 38 players account for approx $112 mil in salary cap $$$. If 2014 salary cap is $125 mil that puts Texans approx $13 mil UNDER. With that $13 mil they will use some $$$ to sign 11 new players to start the new league year (most likely between Jan - Mar 2014, see previous transactions). IF they sign minimum contracts to get to 51 that will leave the Texans at approx $5-$7 mil UNDER to start the new 2014 league year.

The 15 FAs in 2014 accounted for approx $25 mil in 2013 salary cap $$$.

Yes, but the team's youth and talent are all signed for 2014... The free agents you are speaking of: Wade Smith, A. Smith are in the last year of significant deals this year... so, the numbers at the end of contracts tend to be backloaded and larger.

The Texans also could save $12 million in cap space by cutting OD and Dan. Manning... I don't think they will... The point is that the cap situation is healthy and flexible. Next year, Garrett Graham is a free agent. So, the Texans will face an interesting decision on Graham and OD, possibly.

Oh, and the Texans have no dead money issues at all!

There are also other things involved.

1. Out of that $25M, we're not going to see the $9.5M cap space for Antonio and the $3.75M on Wade Smith.
Either they resign to cap friendly deals, or the Texans will replace them.

2. Due to AJ's restructuring , the Texans should have a rollover that also includes a $2M of dead money off the book.
(We'll have to wait to see how Cushing's new deal affect the cap).

3. Watt's extension will certainly include a big chunk of bonus that spreads over the life of his contract regarding cap space.

4. There are several candidates for restructuring if needed.

Sure, the cap space is going to be tight, but you've to do what you've got to do to stay competitive, and if that includes Watt in the plan, nobody is going to complain.

Up to a point, you might have to blow up the team; that's the price you're willing to pay to win a SB or two.

I'm betting Rick Smith just lit a cigar, kicked his feet up & poured himself a glass of wine. Winding down, taking a break..... about to relax.

Then he read your post & spit his wine all over his computer.

:spit:

Time to get back to work.
