JJ Watt absurd numbers

To the best of my research:

Watt is #1 in sacks for a 3-4 DE at 13.5
Chandler Jones is #2 at 6.0, which puts him tied at 25th in the league with 8 other people.

Watt is #1 in passes defended for a 3-4 DE at 13 (#6 overall)
Corey Liuget is #2 at 6 which puts him tied at 61 with 31 other people.

Watt is the only DL in the top 46 in passes defended (#6 overall)

Watt was selected #11th overall Lilly #13th in respective draft class. There are some striking simlarties to early Cowboys. If Texans could add Ryan Kerrigan from Washington he is close to Lilly in terms of motor & hard nosed play.

Technically, he's playing the 5 tech in a 4-3

Wade's 3-4 has often been called a hybrid. Our base package has 3 down linemen & 4 linebackers like a traditional 3-4. But a 3-4 is generally considered a 2 gap system. Their DE "responsibility" is to attack the 3 gap occupying both the tackle & the guard allowing the LBs to flow to the ball carrier. The 3-4 is designed to stop the run.

Other than the 3 down linemen 4 LBs, Wade's 3-4 has nothing in common with a traditional 3-4. He designs his system to penetrat the LOS & create havoc in the back field.

Our SAM lines up like a SAM in a traditional 4-3, Watt plays the 5 tech like a traditional strong side DE in a 4-3, Our NT shades the Center like a 4-3 NT, Antonio plays the 3 tech like a traditional 4-3 up-tackle.

The only difference between Wade's defensive front & a 4-3 is that the weakside DE also plays the 5 technique, lined up outside the weakside tackle instead of directly over (4 tech). This position is also played by a LB and not a DE, standing up more often than using a 3 point stance.

If you think of Watt as a 4-3 DE, his numbers are more in-line to the position. Still great numbers for a 4-3 DE.

But Watt is really playing 4-3 DE even though he's called a 3-4 DE.

Based on your description of Wade's system, which I agree with, Watt equates to a DT, not a DE.

I will say this. When we first drafted Mario, we had notions of moving him all over the line in a 4-3. We'd play him at RDE, LDE, & sometimes move him inside, depending on match-ups.

We "experimented" with that a little bit when he was a rookie. It "appeared" to not have the desired affect, from then on he predominately stayed at Strong-side DE.

Mario simply didn't have the football IQ when he entered the league as Watt did. But I'd have loved to see what a Wade Phillips could do with a rookie Mario, or the 6 years he was here.

All that to say Jj Watt does well, moving all over the defensive front.

JJ Watt is a beast, Shawne Merriman was a beast. If JJ can play for 5 or 6 years at this level then he is for real. If his name keeps coming up on IR then we know why he was such a beast. We're playing a guy this week, Jason Pierre Paul that may be the best in the business. Aldon Smith is getting better each week, he has a body type that can get bigger. Something to keep in mind, roids keep evolving to a point where they are almost untraceable unless testing is specific. If it reaches that point the chemists change the formula. The Testing process is several steps behind.
