JJ Moses Released

Damn!! I just knew JJ was going to break the next return for a TD. The defender always had one extra step than JJ.
 
It was pretty much inevitable...After bringing in Swinton, Buchanon, and drafting Mathis, it didn't look good for Moses...Supposedly Starling and Hollings are in the running for kick and punt return duties as well...

Yes, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. The one thing about JJ was you knew you were going to retain the possession. That can be very important when the game is on the line.
 
Yeah, I was a big JJ Moses advocate but man, the competition on the team for that spot is too much to just be a punt returner. Each one of the other guys will service as either a starter or back up at another position.

Oh well, looks like I have to update my Madden.
 
Buchannon alone makes Moses expendable but with all of the competition it will be exciting to see who gets to return the rock.

I was ready for us to get some homerun hitters. The downside is that we may actually fumble some returns now.

The Associated Press reports the Houston Texans have released KR/WR J.J. Moses. He was Houston's lead return man on punts and kickoffs over the past two years.
 
hopefully nobody picks him up for awhile just incase our new returners start having fumbling problems. JJ was really surehanded and it helped make up for his speed. i'm thinking some team will sign him, bring him into camp, and he'll compete somewhere for the return job. there's got to be a team out there that needs a guy who can hold on to the ball. anybody know of any teams in the need for a return man?

Trust me we will. My thing is this, with the guys we have here will we run more for touchdowns than possesions we lose putting our defense in vulnerable situations. Remember the experiment last season with AG and Starling I believe it was. Also, what happens when the person that's back on punt returns is a starter somewhere else (say PB) and gets hurt doing that? Not only are you screwed in your field position, but you just lost one of your better players. I liked JJ and even though he didn't have break a way speed to take it to the house, you automatically knew on Kick off's you were getting the ball at the 30 to 33 yard line. With that said, I wish him well and hope that Swinton, Mathis, Hollings, PB or whomever else we have back there will shine. Hopefully it won't Bite us in the a@# later.
 
I hope he catchs on with another team. He was a class guy and solid returner. I just hope heis successful where ever he ends up.
 
Definitely a fan favorite and will be truly missed! JJ LOVED the fans, always gave us some type of recognition, not so with so many of the other players. His enthusiasm was infectious! It's amazing what a little nod, a finger pointed in your direction, an occassional high five, a little jig danced in the end zone, or just some type of excitement shown by a player, can do to energize the fans! Hopefully, whoever gets the position will be as fan friendly as JJ.
 
The Mrs. is gonna be heartbroken ... that was her boy. :crying: Hope he catches on somewhere quick. He deserves a spot somewhere in the NFL IMO.

It's the NFL and speed is the name of the game. Now we got 2 or 3 real burners who will compete for the position. But I wish him good luck in the future.
 
JJ signed my football. One thing I won't miss though are the clipping penalties I felt he was sometimes responsible for because he reversed his field alot.
 
While I have always thought that the Texans could get a better return man, Moses did a tremendous job considering his lack of speed. He has great quickness and can make some spectacular moves to make tacklers miss. I wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up. Once again, the Texans show how classy they run their organization by allowing Moses the chance to shop around for a job not just before camp starts but while teams still have mini-camps going on.

Too many "fans" here put too much of an emphasis on TD's in the return game. Moses did a really good job of avoiding fumbles which are just as big a negative as a TD is a positive. Moses was also good at consistently getting some positive yardage. Unfortunately, he just didn't have the speed of an ideal return man, especially on kickoffs. Hopefully the next guy(s) will be able to avoid the mistakes while getting a few more yards in both punts and kickoffs.

The last two years the Texans didn't have anyone who was better.

Now they do.

It takes a while to build a team from the ground up.
 
I think if this move was made last year we all would've been going crazy. However this was the year to do it because two of the guys competing for the return job have taken it to the house several times before.

The one thing I have to say about Moses is alot of people didn't like him because he didn't make TDs but are talking good about him today after he was gone. A Pro Bowl Linebacker was released and after that, you heard many including myself talking about him being old and how his tackle totals were a product of the system. I think that says alot about Moses and the fact that he gave 110% for this organization.

But you're not alone. I was waiting for this day and it's finally come. I think it's great for people to be JJ fans and all but the days of being able to earn a spot on the Texans roster because you do one special teams related thing well are coming to a close. Seeing JJ go out the door just demonstrates that the quality of competition on this team is increasing and will continue to increase.
 
With seven different players competing for the kick return job, J.J. and Reggie Swinton being the only two that are not actively playing on offense or defense, I figured that J.J. would go because the Texans did not sign Reggie to cut him later. Have the competition is great, but with many good quality kick returners we really don't need all of the depth. I wish J.J. the best of luck with the team he signs with.
 
A quick JJ story to share. After one of the pre-season practices a few years ago, my young son (7 years at the time) and I were last in line to get autographs. My son had already decided he was going to grow up to be a NFL quarterback because he played catch with his Daddy every weekend in the back yard.

When we got to the front of the line, JJ and some young receivers were signing autographs. My son proudly told them that he was going to be a quarterback some day.

They gave the autographs but went further. They stopped, grabbed a ball and played catch with him for a few moments. Their logic was that after all, if he was going to be an NFL quarterback, he should get to play catch with REAL NFL receivers.

In the grand scheme of life, it was a small gesture. To my son, it meant the world. They encouraged him and praised how great his passes were and his technique. They were certain that if he worked hard towards his goal that he would succeed. JJ and the other receivers were fantastic. Since then my son has worked and worked. Now, a few years later, he is now playing youth football.... his position, quarterback. His confidence started that day with JJ Moses.

My son and I will be forever grateful.

JJ represented the best in what Professional Athletes should be.

He will always have two fans where ever he goes in life. The gesture won't be forgotten in this house.
 
Great story! It still makes me sick that we let him go. JJ has always been a stand up guy and the city of Houston thanks him from the bottom of our hearts and wishes him the best of luck. I was really looking forward to seeing #84 take one back to tha house this year. Good luck Bro! :headbang:

I think he was a bit of a security blanket for us. We felt safe with him back there. One of the problems with an expansion team is that they make mistakes by the boatload and this was an area we didn't have to worry about to much because he was so solid handling the ball. I wish the best for JJ and hope that another team picks him up.
 
i'll miss his lame ball spins after his SPECTACULAR fair catches.

i, for one, won't miss him. i was happy to hear the news.

You never returned one with Moses in Madden? Dude, people hate playing me because they have to kick the ball out of bounds or have to onside to hold him because when he gets the ball he takes one to the house 2 out of 3 times and when he don't he brings it to the 50.

I am going to miss him on our team and on my Madden.

I tried returning with him. I'm a good PR guy, but not with JJ. I had to switch Moses with Starling (or anyone else in the depth chart) for better results. (or Allen Rossum, whom I traded Dave Ragone for.....haha)

They made him way too fast in Madden. He is a 92 speed, nearly as fast as Starling at 93.
 
I am thinking they are letting him go now to make a move on someone (possibly Bouleware maybe?)
 
This is on my xbox, and I have uploaded one of the roster updates via xbox live. I don't remember if Starling was on the original set up or not.

According to the chronic it was for Rivers' spot.

...The Texans signed unrestricted free-agent Marcellus Rivers to take Moses' spot on the roster. The need for a tight end became paramount with the loss of Bennie Joppru to a torn knee ligament earlier this week.....

So this afternoon, I told my son that the Texans had released JJ. He was absoutely devastated. He cried for ten minutes before I calmed him down.

It is easy for us grown ups to criticize and compare to this possibility or that. He could have been this or that. I wish we had so and so in his place or his slot will go to so and so. I wish we kept him... He is glad we didn't... Nothing wrong with that for grown ups to debate...

A child's view of the game is much more pure. He simply loves the Texans and they are the best in his mind. To my son, JJ was his friend. To my son, he lost a friend and hero that was nice to him.

I like the game better through my son's eyes. He goes into every game excited and thrilled. Convinced his Texans will win. He cheers like a madman for every play -- offense - defense - special teams. He wears his little Texans Uniform and Jersey to every game complete with helmet and shoulder pads.

His big regret was that they never sold JJ Moses Jerseys. He really wanted one.

JJ said to him, "Gotta cheer for the little guys..., you can make it, just keep trying..."

My son would scream at the games, "Go JJ, Go JJ..." When he got tackled my son would yell, "Try again next time, you'll get 'em"

Just some thoughts through the perspective of a child.
