Jets hit Abraham with franchise tag

Man I hope we don't get him ! He's too old, he's too much of a whiner, and
he's too small to be a strong side DE. Let's use our valuable and finite cap
resources on a player that is younger, a better team guy, and would satisfy
a bigger need.

I agree with younger and better team guy, but we have few needs bigger than a strong pass rusher.
 
How would the Texans get Abraham? The Jets seem more interested in moving down and taking Cutler than moving up to grab Leinart. Would the Texans 2nd round pick @ #33 be enough? What kind of contract would Abraham be looking for? Two years ago, Jevon Kearse signed a $66 million contract with a $16 million signing bonus.

I'm sure Abraham would want something in that range. Add that to whatever contract the top pick will sign, and you can pretty much forget about finding any O-line help in free agency. I just can't see Abraham in Houston.

IMO, Peek, Babin, & Orr offer real potential to us to fill the weakside DE position, the place an Abraham would be if on this team. I'm not saying any
of those guys would be the edge rusher that the Jets DE is, but they were all
DEs in college drafted to play OLB in the 3-4 for the Texans. We might have a
real steller weak side DE in the group. And we definitely already have a significant investment in them, especially Babin.
What we don't have is a guy atleast 20-25 lbs bigger than any of those players that could be our strong side DE. That's probably our single biggest
need on defense for the new 4-3.

That may be true; training camp is going to be fun.
 
nun likely Orr will play OLB just due to his size, and out of the three he is probably better at the run and coverage. Peek can play both and eventhough people think he is a situational I am starting to think he could play everydown weakside. Babin is the same way to me. Mario Williams would go along way as the top pick for us to solidify the strongside and take pressure off Babin, Peek, and Pettway. Also having Walker(might be gone), Payne, TJ, and Smith in the middle will definately highlight their abilities more. Abraham is nice, but unless he is part of a trade up for the Jets I just dont see him making it to Houston. He would kill all the money for Bentley and Hope.
 
PS: Last year he pretty much matched his best career year (2001) with 11 sacks, 2 PDs, 58 tackles, and 6 FFs.

I have continually been frustrated by the Texans lack of interest in getting one seasoned vet who could bring some identity and toughness to the defense (watched as we let Jeremiah Trotter go to Philly 2 years ago and Ian Gold go back to Denver last year). I think for the defense in order to take the next step we have to bring in at least one vet who can help bring the young guys along.
 
I see Washington being the team more willing to do this kind of deal.

As for seasoned vets not being signed by us. I think that will change under the influence of this new coaching staff. I think the Texans will not hide behind the four year plan as they want to win now.

If we are looking at the loss of Sharper's and Glenn's leadership, then we certainly shouldn't want Abraham. He's the guy who wouldn't come back from injury at the end of the season - not because he wasn't healed, but because it was a contract year and he didn't want to risk re-injury.
 
Jets Designate Abraham as Franchise Player

The New York Jets announced today that defensive end John Abraham has been designated as the Club’s franchise player. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Abraham, 27, joined the Jets as a first-round draft choice in 2000 (the second of the team’s four first-rounds picks that season) out of the University of South Carolina. The 6-4, 258-pound native of Timmonsville, SC has played in 73 career regular season games, making 63 starts, and registered 328 tackles, along with 53.5 sacks, which represent the fourth-most sacks in team annals, trailing only Mark Gastineau (107.5), Joe Klecko (77.5) and Gerry Philbin (64.5).

“The franchise tag is one of the resources we have to protect ourselves in a competitive league,” said Tannenbaum. “By franchising John, it speaks volumes about what type of player we feel he is and we stand behind our decision, with the full realization that at this point in time it is in the best interest of the club from both a financial and competitive standpoint.”

In 2005, Abraham played in all 16 games, starting the final 15 contests, and finished the season with a team-high 10.5 sacks, as well as registering 67 tackles, a team-high six forced fumbles, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery.

Abraham has been selected to three Pro Bowls over the course of his first six NFL seasons, earning the nominations in 2001, 2002 and 2004. He has forced 18 fumbles throughout his career, to go along with five fumble recoveries and eight passes defensed.

The franchise tag gives Abraham the option to play for the Jets in 2006 for an average salary of the top five highest-paid players at his position. That figure is derived from the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which calls for a franchise player to be guaranteed a one-year offer equal to the average of the top five defensive ends’ (check position) salaries in the NFL for the previous season (2005 in this case). Under terms of the CBA, Abraham may negotiate with any other team in the NFL, but the Jets would retain the ability to match a contract offer. If Abraham is offered a contract that the Jets do not elect to match, the Jets would receive two first round draft choices in the NFL draft in return.

In all fairness, Abraham has been a little screwed by the lack of contract negotions given to him by the Jets.

If by being screwed you mean making 8 million a year, then i guess so. sure he should be under a long contract but how much can people really complain when they make 500,000 a game?

The $$ is nice for individual games, but the franchise tag basically means that if he gets hurt, he's done. Every logical player would rather have a nice contract if they are going to play all out and risk a career ending injury. So yeah, I guess he should be happy to make 8 million, but at the same time, it does make sense that he is playing safely because he has absolutely no guarantees
 
He's a good player but i REALLY HOPE that if the Jets Franchise him again that he DOESNT land here via trade . The 8.3 million he would be due to make is far too much ..... Then having to work out a long term deal with him .... Its not worth it to me .

If they are gonna overpay for a player let it be an offensive lineman .
 
There is a good chance he doesn't play this season for that 1-year contract. The Jets could still trade him (with the team trading signing him to a long-term contract in advance of the trade) or get him to sign a new contract.
