Seems as though when talking about his new stadium during an interview, he kinda round about took a shot as us as fans. Hmm..

While I never get into the running war between the two cities — Dallas stinks and Houston is great, so what is there to fight about? — I thought some of you might be a bit peeved at the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, regarding his latest statement vis-à-vis Houston.

"The Cowboys have never been about checkered tablecloths and boots and hats," Jones told the Los Angeles Times. "They've been about glitz and glitter. Leave the other stuff to the Houston Texans."

My question is: Was he taking a shot at Houston, which might tick all of us off, or just the Texans, which would put him in a long line?

Who knows..? The guy is a snake oil salesman mixed with a latter day PT Barnum. Part of me thinks he was intentionally trying to stoke an in-state rivalry, which so far, has been pretty one sided.

On the other hand, it's virtually impossible for me to take him seriously as a result of his freakish similarity to Miss Jane Hathaway from The Beverly Hillbillies.
 
"Glitz and glitter" is usually the kind of lanquage one uses when he takes a shot at another. You know, kinda like saying someone is "cheap and shallow".
But ole Jer, being the hick from Arkansas that he is, seems to think its a
cool or stylish compliment he's paid himself.

Glitz, glitter, and obnoxious fans. That pretty much sums up why I have hated them my entire life.

Glitz and glitter? That's just embarrassing - especially for a FOOTBALL team. I'm just fine with boots and tablecloths, thanks Jerry.

McNair chuckled when he read the quote.

“I’m not offended by what Jerry said,” McNair said with a laugh. “I’m glad he knows we’re the Texans. I’m proud to be a Texan and a Houstonian.

“It reminded me of Judge (Roy) Hofheinz when he was promoting the Astrodome in the ’60s. I don’t think it’s always about glitz and glitter. Houston’s a hardworking city, and the Texans are a hardworking team. I don’t see anything wrong with checkered tablecloths, hats and boots.”

He was talking in context of the new stadium and refering to the Texans and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo partnership at Reliant.

It was still a dig.

Most annoying Cowboy fans won't be able to afford the PSL and tickets so he has to sell it as a luxury.

With Cowboys owner Jerry Jones now realizing that it’ll cost money to call out game officials like Ed Hochuli, Jones will have to satisfy his urge to play verbal lawn darts with others.

He’s starting with the Houston Texans.

In a recent Los Angeles Times article regarding the Cowboys’ new stadium, Jones gave a quote that included a gratuitous slam at his neighbors to the south. “The Cowboys have never been about checkered tablecloths and boots and hats,” Jones said. “They’ve been about glitz and glitter. Leave the other stuff to the Houston Texans.”

Texans owner Bob McNair resisted the urge to turn the thing into a ten-gallon cat fight.

“I’m not offended by what Jerry said,” McNair told the Houston Chronicle. “I’m glad he knows we’re the Texans. I’m proud to be a Texan and a Houstonian. . . . Houston’s a hardworking city, and the Texans are a hardworking team. I don’t see anything wrong with checkered tablecloths, hats and boots.”

McNair played this one just the right way, chuckling a bit as he took the high road. Though Jones has owned the Cowboys for 19 years, he’s not a Texan — he’s an Arkans . . . an . . . sian. It’s not the first time Jones has made true Texans cringe a little bit, and it surely won’t be the last.:)
And while Jones’ comments weren’t all that inflammatory, they served no purpose other than to potentially piss off a portion of the state that is still trying to recover from Hurricane Ike.

Technically Bob McNair isn't a Texan either. He was born in Florida and grew up in the Carolinas. I thought there was some unwritten Texas law that you must be born here to be a real Texan. ;)
 
I took this as a nothing story. What he said is basically true. the Texans fan base is appealing to the down home, tailgating, boots and hats people around here. That is a good thing and it fits. As a Cowboy fan they have always tried to be a little more glamour with the cheerleaders, the star, etc, etc. I actually don't think he meant anything by it except both teams have different marketing strategies and groups. I mean he and McNair are buds. He knows what the pulse is.

I think you're from Ft.Worth, right H-F ? That brings me to my question, which
is how does Dallas get off spinning it such that FtW is a part that city ?
To me they have both been seperate and distinct citys each with their own history, though there is overlap. And so much is happening in the FtW-Arlington side of N.texas these days, especiually now with the Cowboys moving over there. The baseball team is already there. Then there's the Texas
Motor speedway. I mean if it's about sports (and in texas it certainly is), in N.TX its happening in Tarrant county. Right ?
Now I've been in Texas and Houston for a long-time, but I'm still not from the state so I have a different perspective than the natives like yourself.
First and most important, I fail to see much difference at all between N.Texas
and the Houston area, except that N.Texas has "less humidity". They always go on and on about that in N.Texas, though they have miserable, crappy
summers just like we do with temps in the 90s beginning in May and not
abating until October (yup its still at or close to 90, here and in N.Texas).
But Dallas (or Ft.Worth), is vastly different than Chicago, or Philly, or certainly
Seattle or San Fran. But different than Houston ? Not much at all really.
Thoughts ?

Ft. Worth and Dallas are not even close to each other...its 30 something miles, Arlington in between. Ft. Worth is pretty. Trees and some hills. TCUs campus, a great downtown, friendly, laid back, great arts and a place you'd raise a family. Dallas has some great things. My sister lives there in the Highland Park area and the homes are great, her friends and people I know are great but overall it is more about being dressed up, what car you drive and tries to be high brow. As far as differences physically between Houston and the DFW area. When i grew up it did seem like it was just pure 100 heat days and then you got a truer fall starting in October whereas here the humidity makes you sweat while it is hot and you really aren't sure when you will get your Fall. As a kid we used to have regular snow days in FW too..though it doesn't happen much now..must be global warming:)

So to your question, there are differences and it is more about the laid back nature of the towns. Ft. Worth and Houston have the same type people. Dallas tries harder to be upscale. I'm not saying it is a bad city and all but it is different in those ways. Its pretty obvious when you are there. I have two brothers that live in Arlington..one works with the Cowboys selling their new suites in the new stadium but works directly with JJ and the management. Anwyays, Arlington is hard to explain..Rangers, new Texas stadium, Six Flags and thousands of random restaurants. To me it has always just been the crazy fun area between Dallas and Ft. Worth but many live there and can commutwe either way. It reminds me of a burb here but with alot more to offer and alot more history behind it. The teams being there are more a product of land and money.

I'm not sure if any of this answers your questions but there are differences if you have spent two distinct times in your life in both areas. I think with the disatnce between the two people just assume the DFW area is all alike or they go to extremes and think Ft. Worth is still truly a Cowtown and Dallas is all big hair and super rich snobs. The funny thing is Ft. Worth has ALOT of old money and Dallas is more new money. Again, i think you'd find the similarities more between FW and Houston, sans size.

It's true we're about boots and hats and Mr. Jones is about glitz and glitter. I mean we're down to earth, friendly people here in Houston and Jerry... well, he likes glitter because he spends too much time with other women getting facials, manicures, and facelifts. I'm not trying to come down on the Cowboys or anything but we're just trying to win some playoff games and that's not something EITHER team has done in a while. I mean Jerry's got his way of doing things and lookin' silly and we've got our way... and actually look like men.

Type "glitz glitter" into Google's image search. The first images are some teenage girl's angst-ridden blog, mascara, and Tinkerbell with flowers. The whole page is filled with makeup products and other girly stuff. yeah, you got us there, Jerrah. :rolleyes:

I'm talking fundamental, essential differences here between cities/areas: geology, climate, culture economics.
Dallasites idea of superiority because there was once a TV show called "Dallas" is superficial. Denver, just for example and comparison and to make my point, has something very real and profound in that the Rocky Mountains lie just to its west.

Well I stated some of the climate differences...there really seems to be in a distinct fall and winter in the DFW area compared to say here. Geologically, Dallas isn't anything off the charts location wise but in general I don't think alot of Texas does except Austin. I love al the cities and I think Ft. worth is semi-hilly and full of trees but Austin has the lakes, hills, views, etc. Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Houston...your getting more flatlands and whatever is manmade.

Actually, I have a certificate naming me a Texan.

My father was in the military, and I moved around from state to state as a kid, changing schools every couple years. We eventually moved to Houston and I finally found a place that felt like home.

But I was confused at first to say where I was from. Eventually, after I lived here a long time, I petitioned the governor to make me a Texan. And I received a certificate in the mail. Really.

So, I guess McNair like a lot of us is a Texan by choice. In some ways, I love my state more than my youngest sister who has lived here all her life, because I don't take it for granted. Besides, how the heck could I move away--they don't have good Tex-Mex in other parts of the world.
 
Oh, and here's my take on the Jerry Jones comment, in part:

Jerrah. Let me splain something to you. I'm guessing that most Cowboy fans don't want to have their franchise described as "glitz and glitter." Perhaps it's less of a pejorative than "cocaine, mugshots and whores" so I suppose Dallas fans have that going for them.

Even so, you might as well have added "unicorns, rainbows and fairy dust" in your description. Even a fellow from Arkansas should figure out that most football-watching menfolk don't want their team described as glittery.

Not sure where you're going with that Frog, but it's like 45 miles from Bush Airport to NASA, without ever leaving the City of Houston. Thus, 30 miles is close.

What I meant, alluding to his question, is that miles between may not be great but the cities themselves are completely distinct.

I here what you're saying, but in the ultimate Dallasite v. Houstonian argument, Dallasites are made up of three (as you mention) distinctive cities as where Houstonians are, well, Houstonians.

See that is where I disagree. Dallasites are people in Dallas who live the way they do. Ft. Worth even has fights with Dallas about not wanting to be included with them. Arlington can do whatever but I'm from Ft. Worth, not Dallas and in no way grew up as a Dallasite. Just a fan of my local sports teams. I hated when I moved here and said I was from Ft. Worth and people would be like...so "how did you like Dallas?" I'd go, "I don't know, I didn't live there."

Should've made myself more clear. I think folks from Ft. Worth do claim being from Ft. Worth (or independent from Dallas), Dallasites on the other hand, claim folks from Ft. Worth, Arlington, Denton, Mesquite, North Texas and such are ALL Dallasites. I get the difference.

No wonder you were annoyed by people not recognizing the significance of Ft.Worth. For openers it is a city that is something like 650-700 K in pop, making it actually larger than KC, Mo, the area that I origionated from. It really speaks rather poorly of Houstonians in the sense they knew so little about another major city in their own state.
And unlike Dallas, Ft.Worths growth potential is much more promising by virtue of not being nearly so blocked out by suburbs to its north & west, which of course is the primary growth path in DFW, like Dallas is. At some point in time there's little doubt that FtW will be larger than Dallas.
I know a lot about the history of the 2 cities, in large part by way of owning stock in SouthWest Airlines for years and therefor having some knowledge about the battles between Dal & FtW as it relates to Southwest, its HDQs location at Love Fld, and the "Wright Amendment".

That doesn't speak poorly of Houstonians. Maybe some transplants that don't really know Texas. Heck, I consider Irving, Euless, Denton, Richardson all separate Municipalities from Dallas. However, the whole DFW moniker doesn't help.
