Jeff Allen OG agrees 4 years 28 million

He's a good player. Not quite as good as Brooks but he's definitely closer to Brooks' level than Ben Jones level. Excellent signing considering we lost Brooks.

We lost Brooks? Missed that report. Crap.

Allen out September 2014 with elbow surgery. I'm looking for other info.
edit: he was 4 year starter Illinois at both left and right tackle.

Had to do something. Not sure why they didnt pay the 8M for Brooks? Allen is getting 7M. With a new backfield the OL better be addressed no doubt, but Im not sure you use a late 1st on an OL, you gotta go best offensive skill player IMO and then maybe 2nd/3rd rounds you find the linemen you'll need. You could probably find the opening day C in round 3 or even later.

Apparently we picked up Tony Bergstrom who is a center. TE and NT in the draft this year then? I would love for us to try and find our own Gronk.

Let's get specific, i keep seeing OG but is he also potentially a tackle? Does he have the beef to be a RG or does he take over at LG and shift X to center?

I liked Brooks at RG. Is Allen really an upgrade?

Brooks was not good last year, IMO... and he is showing signs of breaking down physically: seems to have chronic, recurring injuries like back, and ankles, which may be the cause of his fall-off in performance.

Why not?

Not sure I agree with that entirely.

While it would surely point a sign in the 'what the hell is up with his toe' department, it nowhere near supports a 'breaking down physically' argument. Brooks was voted best G in football. Brooks is now the highest paid G in football. There is a correlation.

I feel this team is in much more need of a playmaker in the WR corps, or even another great RB. Somebody dynamic. I've always felt that unless you are getting the best lineman in college football then go with someone who puts points on the board. You can find exceptional linemen in later rounds.

Do you suggest taking a center in the 1st round? Duane isnt going anywhere this year, and neither is Derek Newton.

He's an OG. He can slide out to OT in a swing situation to cover for injuries but he's an OG.

He's a slight downgrade from Brooks but not by a whole lot. If Brooks is an 'A-' level player then Allen is a 'B+'.

I was suggesting a possibility for why they didn't compete with those dollar figures. Given that the Jeff Allen deal and Brandon Brooks deal took place within an hour of each other on the first day of free agency and are worth similar dollar amounts, it is likely that the Texans wanted to move on from Brooks for a reason apart from the economics of his deal.

Yo

Another WR would be terrific, no argument there. Not sure about a much more dynamic RB than the one we just paid.

A OL late in the first seemed to have paid off handsomely for us already once. And as for that guy, I'm not convinced we get him back at full force to start the year, or if he gets back at all. Have you heard something good regarding his health that would have us avoid a guy like Spriggs, Decker, or Conklin at 22? There are after all playmakers like Cooper, Shepard, Caroo, and Addison available after the 1st round. And those guys always look better when their shiny new QB has time to get them the ball.

Guess I'd just rather not go cheap on the guys in the trench.

Jack Conklin should be there.

But I can't pass up Andrew Billings NT if he's still there.
Absolutely. Our DLINE is in way worse shape than our OLINE. Watt an aging maybe over the hill Wilfork and that's about it. Crick looks to be gone. Pegan sucks. We do need some young talent on the OL but we need instant rotation guys on the DL and this is the year to get them.
Billings and Robinson would be great picks. He'll there are about 8 guys on the DL that would come in and play alot right off the bat.

We really really need a slot WR that returns kicks too. Hopefully in the second or third round we can get a Braxton Miller or Shephard.

Duane will answer the bell. While I agree last year was a rough year for the Big Dog, he tore his quadriceps, not exactly an achilles or structural knee damage. He was the 17th best tackle in football last year after being an all pro for years. I expect him to bounce back, be a leader for this team and help us go far in the postseason.

Cant write him off yet. Sorry.

He didn't tear his quadriceps. He ruptured his quadriceps tendon. Very similar to an achilles tendon and much worse than structural knee damage, other than a tibial plateau fracture. See what CnD says about it.

Please don't forget my guy WR/slot Charone Peake has risen from 168 to currently 150. Good size and great speed.

True. Very good points. Love me some Mr Nasty Duane Brown. I just dont see a kid who's going to come in and be effective in a starters role. Thats the stuff that gets QBs hurt. I'd rather go sign a veteran than spend a first on a guy who will be expected to start day 1. I'd rather that guy be out on the perimeter and not so close to the QB.

You can never have too many good RBs. Only having one competent guy in Miller isnt a good insurance plan. Blue? meh. Grimes? Meh. I do like Akeem Hunt though.

I know he would answer the bell if he could. I'm just not sure he can.

Man i dont know why this whole time I thought the injury was less severe than that. Some quick surfing though and supposedly he's ahead of schedule in his recovery. Still have faith in him he doesnt have a history of injuries.

According to what I can find its a 6 month recovery protocol, so wouldnt that put him ready for training camp?

Duane feels he'll be ready, and thats enough for me.

I really liked Allen coming out of college, hoping the Texans would take him in the 2nd round (he went to the Chiefs before the Texans picked). But, Allen had a tough time making his mark his first 3 years, never establishing himself as a full time starter. Allen had the "bad body" knock going into the draft and maybe that had something to do with getting nicked a lot.

However when Allen was inserted into the lineup week 7, the Chiefs running game took off. Behind no name RBs. And the team went on an 11 game. Coincidence? Maybe not. This looks like a case of picking up a player as he's about to peak.

thanks Doc. If this holds true, it will be good for our ground game as I think Brooks was a little awkward teaming with Newton

Signing a free agent Guard away from the Chiefs?? Let's hope he's Wade Smith 2.0

Also, interesting to find out he was Whitney Mercilus's roommate back at Illinois.

So far sounds like an excellent signing, let's pray it works out!

Wade Smith? I sure hope he's better than the Wade Smith we saw here

I asked a few Chiefs fans to tell me more about him on their unofficial fan forum. All I heard were positives: Great glue guy on the O-Line. They felt he was the team captain of that offensive line because of his communication. He could be heard shouting out to his teammates if they weren't lined up properly.

Tremendous leader on the field and in the locker room. They hated to see him go. The only negative said about him from people who watched him play was the fact he had some lingering injuries. If he stays healthy I expect him to start at Right Guard for the Houston Texans in 2016.

In that video I posted you can see his passion for the game in a post-game interview. He's all about the team and a very selfless and inspiring young man.

Great signing for the Texans: This kid has a heart of gold. He can inspire our entire offensive line to become a good unit. And that's true, an offensive line can become great if all five guys play as one. And he says that himself, something along those lines, in the video I posted.

Call me a homer but I feel less stressed about our O-Line as others do. That being said, we'll draft a few O-Lineman and improve our depth as well. I still think we already have our starting center and right guard with these recent free agent signings.

I think this guy is an upgrade in the run game. His ability to move the line will be big in short yardage situations.
I used to play Right Tackle at Sam Houston State and also at Elsik High School in Alief. If I still played I would love to play right next to a guy like Jeff Allen. Those are the type of players I would enjoy going to battle with.

This may have only been the third best player we signed in free agency, but at some point during the 2016 season we may be talking about how invaluable he is to our offensive line.

Call me a homer
