Previous mock draft http://texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48508

Looks like a very possible scenario. I figure one WR maybe limas maybe not will go ahead of us and rivers falls to us. He's easilly BPA in my opinion.

I would take in this senario

1. Jenkins
2. Campbell
3. Merling
4. Rivers

I had Houston taking Jenkins in my last mock, and after that I heard about his character issues and thought there was no way the Texans would pick him. I would be happy with either Merling or Campbell, but with the d-line being full of first round picks I would question them selecting another one so early.

I would like to see us trade back to Tampa Bay's pick.

M. Kiffin really likes Jenkins & I believe they would make great trade partners.

They shouldn't do the deal until their pick is on the clock in case Williams or DRC falls to #18.

If Rivers falls to us, I'd be pretty happy.

Except for the fact that he is cluster coupulation in coverge ? in a divivion which features Manning. Thanks but no thanks. Move back. Going to gamble like that take avril. I don't know if he can cover either....but he has better numbers. One of the weaknesses of the back seven was not being able to cover the #3 reciever & TE. Why you would draft a LB who can not cover is beyond me. Send him on the blitz every down ?

It doesn't say he can't cover in the scouting reports I've seen (if you have a link that says he can't please share), and most mocks have him going before the Texans even pick. So if the best corners and O-linemen are gone why would they not take a shot at him?

Have no link. just watched the senior bowl practices...He ain't strating for the club in September. He won't play anything but special teams when they are playing the Colts. If he does, Manning will lite him up like grannies Christmass tree. He's a year away from starting.

He is the most athletic real LB in the draft, bar none. He has the ability to cover TE's. Just because he hasn't done it much before doesn't mean he can't. Again Pete, until you can provide something factual or a piece of evidence towards your opinion, it's just that. Please, quit asserting your opinion as fact. I'm not saying he can or cannot cover at this point, but I'm saying, and almost every draft professional agrees, that he has all the athletic ability in the world.

The first thing any team who plays him will do YTF, is isso the guy one on one with thier RB or slot. they will toast the guy all day long. He is a college chase LB not a three down NFL OLB. The fact...every body at the senior bowl beat him off the line. He was lost. Not Joseph addai, Not Maurice Jones Drew or anthony Gonzales....second teired, second day guys. Got six months to get him ready. good luck with that. the guy is going to drop like a stone. big difference in being a chase LB in the Pac ten and being a three down OLB in the NFL. all he needs is the butter...Toast. Let somebody else draft that.

Why werent those second tiered guys beating him all year then?

Why is he rated the best LB in the draft?

Why is the probowl so unpopular. Because the players dont want to get hurt right. These players have nothing to prove.

Why would a superstar college player wont to play his heart out at the senior bowl. To impress the scouts, maybe. Or would he play it safe, after all he is the best LB in the draft everybody else is playing catchup so why would he risk getting hurt and dropping well out of the first round and probably the first day.

Did you ever wonder why the no-name small school guys are always the ones who have the most impressing senior bowl games, and practices. Its cause they have nothing to lose. They cant hurt there draft stock. Ya they might get hurt to but theirs more for them to gain then lose.

I don't know if it's more to your credit or my detriment but I have never thought of it that way. +rep coming your way.

as i say all the time, these players are not finished products. draft the best athletes with the most upside and coach 'em up right. something like a linebacker not being the best in coverage at the college level is certainly something that can be taught, since there's so much technique that goes into that at that position.

lol @ "6 months" to get him ready. like it's a one year project.

Thank you Kas. Where have you been? We've been missing you.

Height
6 ft. 2.2 in.

Weight
241 lbs.

Speed
4.50 (Pro Day)

Strengths

Rivers is a really intense player. Plays with a lot of passion. Thrives on making the big hit but never at the cost of a missed tackle. Excellent fundamentally at wrapping up the ball carrier and driving him to the ground. Very consistent throughout the game. Has great height at 6-2 and is able to knock down passes. Especially good at playing the screen or quick slant routes. Very explosive and can break up well designed plays just by himself. Solid quickness and straight line speed. A highly motivated player who is known for his high work ethic and passion for the game. A sideline to sideline player, very active is backside pursuit plays. Tested incredibly well at his pro day, with a solid 4.5 40 and a 42 inch vertical.

Weaknesses

Makes himself easily blockable at times with poor angles and is impatient at letting the play develop. Below average at rushing the passer with only 5.5 career sacks.

So, essentially, you said that he is nothing more than a specialist who is not an every down OLB. You say he should stick to rushing the passer when it is clear that he was not used in that role at USC, so there is no indication that he will be great at it in the NFL, making your claim absurd yet again. I also went on to bold some things that directly contradict what you say. Again, I honestly question if you research or have any prior knowledge to posting before you assert your opinion as fact.

4.5 or not the guy can't cover he can't cover. He has the hips but not the brain. That isn't good for this club @ OLB. Wanna stick him the middle move demeeeco.... 18 is kinda high for a two down guy.

and you've got that outa one game not to mention it was basically an allstar game.

Are you basing this on just his senior bowl practices? If so dont you think thats kinda near sighted?

Have you watched him while at USC? 4.5 at 241 is 4.5 at 241. He can cover. He may not be Urlacher, but he can cover.

After one of the big LT's, Rivers actually may be my second choice. I'm not that high on the corners in round 1. I think Rivers at the Will would be a dynomite tandem to go with Ryans, and would give us an excellent front 7. Yes, we would still have work to do in the back 4, but we can work on adding more talent there later if neccessary. Rivers can blitz, and unlike our current weakside backers, can actually cover TE's and RB's man to man. That alone improves our pass coverage tremendousely. How many times have we been burned on 3rd down before we solve that problem? This guy reminds me a bit of Derrick Brooks. I think he can easily be a pro-bowler, or at worst will be a very solid starter.

As with every year since this team came into existence (and the Boselli experiment was over) I've been pining for a high pick to be used on a Left Tackle. I'm still in that camp but if the guys we want are gone, I wouldn't be unhappy with Jonathan Stewart, or another defensive pick. Seems like Rivers would be a good choice.
