Jason Babin......my 2nd cousin

I hope he does well. He's very quick.

A lot of fans on this board and texanstalk.com board were scratching their heads (and some were pulling their hair out) when we traded up to draft him.

I guess that's the business of being a fan. And, as you can see form reading the posts...we're in this phase of casting final judgment on players, such as Tony Hollings etc. (Babin being mixed into that discussion from time to time).

He was drafted to be a speed guy on the ends who could pressure the QB, but I think he's getting muscled around a bit (got pushed around in the Raiders game). Part of the problem is that I think our 3-4 scheme isn't getting the push from the linemen and it therefore allows the o line to tee off on Babin since o lines are handling our middle rush with ease. If we could get a better push up the middle, I think the tackle would have to gamble on some plays and just stick a hand out at Babin (when Babin rushes) so the tackle can stay "home" and help out the interior of the o line but also attempt at the same time to slow down Babin--As it stands, they can just manhandle him because there's no need to double-team any of our inside rushers at this point (which is why we drafted Travis Johnson:to get a more aggressive inside presence).

Our inside rush is just weak, in my opinion, and I think some of it is just the nature of the 3-4 scheme. I'm not a fan of the 3-4. It asks the LBs and DBs to make the plays while the 3 linemen are just there to stall the play to allow the LBs and the DBs to "make the play." I could rant on, but....I'm gonna get flamed for saying this much. :survivor:
 
We have three young OLBs all with talent and potential to be solid performers
in the NFL, perhaps even outstanding performers. Many think Babin is the
best prospect of the three, others think he's not even one of the best two.
But he's different than the other 2 (Peek & Anderson), in 2 ways: the price we paid for him and the fact he was given the opportunity to start his rookie
year. So Babin now has the advantage of experience over the other young backers. But we are gonna find out a lot about these 3 guys this year
because how they perform (individually and collectively), will have a great deal to do with the success (or failure), of the whole team this year. Its crunch time.

I dont know wherre the rest of you were last year, but Babin did very good for his first year here. He is a awesome player and we are looking at him being a force in the future that gets even better. The people who are stating crap in this thread dont know his numbers last year on what he acccomplished for our team, but they need to find out. I, for one, feel Babin's name will be heard several times per game on the tackle, sack, or interception he just did. :texflag:
 
agreed. its hard for a team to have only one or two good pass-rushers. then they get keyed on every play. in order to have a premeir pass rush EVERYbody has to be a decent passrusher.IMO

not to be a jackass, but 4 sacks, 0 int, 54 tackles is not "very good" for a 1st round (27th pick), but I think he'll pick it up this year and turn into very good LB for years to come. :headbang:

there are some 3-4 veterans who beg to differ (thanks to vinny's research from "the other" thread)...

Let’s look at guys playing the strongside or LOLB in a few other 3-4 defenses (I've posted this several times). Earlier in the season last year I said his game looks like Vrabel's does. Statistically they ended up very close, and Babin was the only rookie in this group.

Steelers Clark Haggans had 37 tackles and 6 sacks
Patriots Mike Vrabel 71 tackles and 5.5 sacks
Chargers Ben Leber 60 total tackles and 2 sacks
Texans Jason Babin 63 total tackles and 4 sacks

Looks very good when compared to some veterans. Pro Bowl worthy? No. Very good for a rookie. Yes.
 
My cousin's mom's sister's grandma's uncle's son knows Deborah Frazier, who was an extra in Footlose with Kevin Bacon. There...there's my 7 degrees...
 
I have to say up to this point I am somewhat disapointed im him vis-a-vis his draft slot, and the amount we paid to get him. I think he has played the run reasonably well, but all of this glass half-full commentary aside, it was publicly stated that Capers targeted this guy to be a monster pass rusher. We didn't give up 3 draft picks to have a decent run stopper. Capers made very public pronouncements comparing him to Kevin Greene. Last time I looked Greene had 160 career sacks, and had ten seasons of 10 or more sacks. To be fair here, Greene didn't start until his second season, and had 7 sacks that year, so it's not as if his first year is a really true comparison. But, I do think it's fair given his draft position, and what we had to trade to get him, to be critical of his lack of production early in his career. I am still hopeful of course, but we didn't pick a Jevon Kearse here, I think it's safe to say. :rolleyes:

I agree. He's a much more complete player than Kearse. Also, he plays a different position on a team that had much less talent around him on defense last year. I thought Babin played well last year. His sack totals would've been much better had the DL done its job last season.

That being said, I'd like to see he and Peek put more pressure on the QBs than they have to this point in the preseason.

To me it's pretty good for a rookie DE out of college converting to OLB in his first season in a system that ran a pretty vanilla defense all season...

I know that none of those you are comparing him to are not 1st round picks, Im not sayin I dont like him or that he doesnt fit in, I hope he does great for us in years to come, all Im saying is that he hasnt impressed me as a 1ST ROUND-27th OVERALL PICK :brickwall

The guys I'm comparing him to actually play the strongside linebacker in a 3-4 (Babin's position ya know). Those are the players to compare him to if you want to be fair...
 
There's another thread on the exact same topic somewhere around here and the consensus was that he's doing fine (as evidenced by the fact that there's no "Cut Babin" threads), but that he still needs some improvement. The fans want to see sacks this year or heads are going to role. Babin happens to be an OLB, so you see the main issue. We know he can stop the run. NOBODY doubts that.

Personally, I think Babin's gonna be in a Texans uniform for a long time.
 
Babin could be a bust and still not get cut for years. Just look at Hollings as an example. I think Babin is a good player by the way.

I'm confused BC, if you think he's a good player why don't you say he could be a success instead of saying he could be a bust ?
 
I wasn't saying Babin is or is going to be a bust. I was merely pointing out that the Texans seem reluctant to cut high draft picks that don't cut the mustard so Babin doesn't have to worry if he ever did fall into that category. No way Hollings should have made the team this year. With that in mind, Babin has a safety net because he was such a high pick that cost us extra draft picks. He has earned his spot imho up to this point. Whether or not he was worth what we gave up to get him remains to be seen.
