JaMarcus Russell, Brian Brohm, Troy Smith, or Kevin Kolb?

Which QB would you take?

I'm assuming that Brady Quinn is going to be a top 5 pick. So let's say these 4 QB's are available for the Texans to pick. Which one would you take? Would you take Russell with the #8 pick? If you knew for certain that Brohm and Smith would drop into the 2nd round, would you take one of them? If you wanted to improve the Texans in other areas with the 1st and 2nd round picks, and you knew Kolb would be available in the 3rd round, would you instead take him?

I would take Kolb in the 3rd if this were the case. I love JaMarcus Russell, but I would rather improve the team in other areas with our 1st and 2nd round draft picks. I think Kolb would be a very good QB who we could let sit for a year or two in order to learn the offense and we have a Damon Huard, Rosenfels, or a Jake Plummer handle the QB position until Kolb is ready to start.
 
After tonight...Russel is the #1 overall. Quinn is going to fall like a rock. And no one, no one is going to spend a first round pick on a six foot QB. Kolb will go in day two to a vertical passing team. He's not coming here.
 
Brian Brohm is a first round pick, but that said, I would rather see Kolb here in a later round then for us to spend another 1st round pick on a QB (unless we trade up, or down, or something).
 
Brohm wouldn't last to the 2nd round. Russell is the only QB on this list that I especially like but I wouldn't use the #8 pick on him. I'd look at him in next year's draft if Carr flops this coming season, but if it was up to me, I'm not looking for a QB yet.
 
at this point it's looking more like quinn could be available where you pick over russell. but i'll bet both will be gone.

Possibly or possibly not.

Detroit needs a QB but the harrington still seems to linger so they might avoid it.

Cleveland has Frye but Brady is the hometown kid. How much do they like Frye is the question?

Tampa Bay is another team that needs one. Simms gets an extension but only 2 years which is enough time to train another kid.

We'll see but one could fall too us. I'd take Russell if he was there but I don't really see that happening. I think if he came out he wouldn't make it past Oakland. Seems like Al's type of guy.
 
Looking at who's drafting ahead of us, more than 2 teams need a QB:

1. Oakland- Don't think they'll take a QB in the 1st though.
2. Detroit- They need one, but they need everything.
3. Tampa- Chris Simms or Gradkowski probably isn't the answer.
4. Cleveland - Charlie Frye isn't the answer either. I think they'll try and take Troy Smith later in the draft though.
5. Arizona- They have Leinart. Don't need a QB.
6. Washington- Don't need one. Campbell is their QB of the future.
7. Minnesota- Tarvaris Jackson is their QB. They took him in the 2nd round last year.

I could possibly see Tampa and Cleveland passing on Russell and/or Quinn. Detroit, I don't think they'll pass on either, but I don't think it's out of the question. Oakland should take a QB, but with Al Davis who knows? I see a chance of Russell dropping to 8 if Quinn grades out as the better QB, but I think the chances are against us if that's who the Texans wanted.

Why would Cleveland pass up Brady Quinn (a local guy and better prospect) for Troy Smith in the 2nd round?

The only reason I can think of is fan pressure from Ohio. I imagine that the pressure to take Troy Smith since he's an Ohio State guy is probably the same amount the Texans had to take Vince Young.
 
While I realize that Troy Smith is from the Cleveland area, Brady Quinn is from Dublin, OH which is only an hour or two from Cleveland. It's not like he is from California. On top of that, you have Quinn saying that he would love to play for the Browns and wants to be drafted by them.

No, Oakland will hopefully trade for Carr so they wont need a QB. Like the Saints from last year.:yahoo:
 
As impressive a physical specimen that Russell is, I didn't come away from the Sugar Bowl just blown away. He will be a heck of a qb though I think.

His mobility is not very good, but then again when you're as big as he is, you don't have to be. He threw a few passes that his receivers bailed him out on. Too much air under them I thought...

At this point I echo Texan Sam and say draft OL, DL, or DB first, then take Kolb or even Tate later.

I voted to take Russel @ #8 if he is there. I understand he isn't perfect, and needs to sit for a while, but I think he can be special.

I'm not a draft nut..... I don't know who all is there.... or should be. I would be perfectly fine if the Texans do not draft a QB at all in '07. I've seen all the QBs mentioned play, and the only ones I think worth taking in this draft are Russell & Brohm. I don't see much upside in Brady Quinn, or KevinKolb. I know it isn't a popular opinion, but I see them being mediocre at best. I feel for whatever team buys in on the Brady Quinn hype machine and takes him in the first.

If Art Shell returns to Oakland, & decide they need to draft a QB, most likely they'll wait for Smith in the second...... or look for someone in the third. I seriously doubt QB is high on their list of needs, so I seriously doubt they'll take a QB in this draft at all. All the excuses & "reasons" you heard about us passing on QBs in previous drafts, plug them in here.

If Detroit wants to start winning games, they'll go defense in the first round. Personally I think the people of Detroit are ready to start winning, and tired of building.

Tampa Bay: Simms.. Gradkowski.. Rattay.... with no one to throw the ball to. Calvin Johnson will be the #3 overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Cleveland: Charlie Frye.... Derrick Anderson... I would pass on QB.... defense, defense, defense..... most likely secondary help.... unless there is a pass rushing monster available.

Arizona...... depending on who their coach is, they'll probably go OL though.

Washington..... I don't know what they'll do, but I know they'll pass on QB.

Minnesota.... will pass on QB.... most likely Chester Taylor is allright, but I can see them taking AD.... or a Wide Reciever...

Most likely it won't happen this way. There's a little bit of wishful thinking in there. But AD/Russell could be there for the picking.

Again I feel sorry for whoever takes Quinn in the first round.
 
I chose Kolb in 3 because I don't think the Texans should pick a QB in Rd 1 and I seriously doubt Brohm and Smith will still be on the board for the 2nd Rd pick.

I take Russell....top QB's are tough to find. A 3rd of the league is perpetually looking for a QB. Backs are everywhere, every year, year in-year out.

QB isn't high on Oakland's list of needs? Their two QB's are the two worst QB's in the league.

And Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson are not the answer at QB for Cleveland. There is no way that they pass up a local guy like Brady Quinn.

Minnesota is also not going to pick a RB. They just signed Chester Taylor to a 4 year contract and without having a legit WR on their team I don't see them passing on Dwayne Jarrett or Ted Ginn Jr.
 
A question that pops in my head.... would it better to get the "future" in this draft or wait till the next draft? Not sure who's coming out next year, but maybe the "vet of choice" along with current capable backups take us through this coming season if we don't have the QB of choice fall to us in whatever round.

Then if (I mean WHEN) we have a better record next season - will there be enough quality "franchise" QB players available to pick up later in the rounds?

You do know of course this is my opinion.

But If I were in Oakland, and I just signed Aaron Brooks, and have Andrew Walther on my roster, I would not believe Brady Quinn, or Jamarcus Russell would do any better. I've got problems bigger than my QB.. & my FA QB(Brooks) performed no where close to his career avgs...

I understand you don't have a high opinion of him. But I've watched him play. He's had some success in this league, and I think I can coach him to lead my team to where I want to be.

Charlie Frye & Derek Anderson?? You've already seen enough of those two QBs in two years time that you can conclude what you fail to see in your 5 year starter?? c'mon..... Depending on what the question is, I think Charlie Frye(also from the Ohio area) would do just fine.

I can see Minnesota going WR....... but I can also see them going RB.
 
If Smith was there in the second, I wouldn't see much of a reason not to take him... but he wont be

I agree, but didn't want to salt the mine so to speak with my opinion. I suspect that there are a fair number who would take AP and I don't think that is a bad pick by any streatch of the imagination and may prove to be the more productive near term, it's just that Russel is the better long term pick, IMO.
