It's Over

Since I joined this board I have been in a few arguments with some Aggies about Jorvorskie Lane.

To me, he has always had a terrible attitude and is a "me first" type of guy. My opinion was validated when Lane pretty much refused to move to FB before his senior year even though it was in his best interest. He would be a FB in the NFL and Sherman thought it would help the Aggies and help Lane's future if he got a head start and played a year in college at the position.

Here is a recent article that came out about Lane:

http://www.star-telegram.com/college_sports/story/1272106.html

...Lane admitted being "stunned for a couple of weeks" when Sherman told him he was moving to fullback in the spring, and he reported to fall camp about 25 pounds heavier than the 265-pound target mark set for him.

"People look at it like I’ll just wake up one day and lose weight," he said at the time. "It’s a hard task."

Lane also was slow to embrace his role as a blocker, something scouts say he must do if he wants to play on the next level.

"A lot of better players than him have had to do that," Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith said. "There are no 290-pound halfbacks his size in the league. Guys have to change positions and change their mind-sets all the time.

"We would all love to date Halle Berry, but hey, we can’t. We have to be who we are. This is not a time to be stubborn...."

NFL scouts were still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Whatever his mental faults, Lane has always been a very talented football player. But now, it's over. In my opinion, Jorvorskie Lane will never play in the NFL.

...Texas A&M FB Jorvorskie Lane (5-11 7/8, 297 pounds) was going to work out at Stephen F. Austin, but pro day rules didn’t permit it, so he went to a nearby high school in Lufkin, Texas, to work out for scouts. He ran outdoors on FieldTurf, and had 40-yard dash times of 5.00 and 5.11. He didn’t do the vertical leap but had an 8-foot, 9-inch broad jump with a 4.51 short shuttle and a 7.64 three-cone drill. He did 17 reps on the bench....

Now his pro day numbers are pretty bad, but he still has the ability. I just don't think anybody is going to waste a draft pick on a guy who has let himself fall so far.

I think he will be a UDFA and unless he can turn it all around he will not make a team next year.

This isn't an "I told you so" thread. I just found some new info on Lane and thought a lot of posters on here would be interested, especially considering he is a home grown guy.

I am still holding out hope that Lane will "see the light" and realize that he is flushing away his future. Maybe he can still get this thing turned around.

He doesn't have a place in the leauge IMHO.

Not only is he too big and slow to play in the backfield, but he is too weak to play on the line.

When I was 340 I ran a 5.3....So in relation, his forty time is atrocious...But the forty time doesn't bug me as much as the 17 bench reps...That's ridiculous + 1...

Aggie here. He was an amazing RB for us . . until his senior year. His "me first" attitude became very apparent when he had a hissy fit at spring practice after being moved to FB. I think we now know why fans loved him, but teammates disliked him. He was great when he was scoring TD's, but when the TD's are gone you're left with a guy who just won't work for it and there is no place in the NFL for a guy who won't put in the work.

No doubt though, it was a mistake moving him to FB IMO. There were numerous times we should have been running him on 3rd and short and ran Goodson instead only to watch him get stuffed in the backfield. J-Train should have been in the game and running the ball a lot more and I definitely feel not playing him hurt us this last season.

As far as his pro-potential: he isn't a pro. He never was and never will be. What I am the most disappointed about is this: the guy's game is built on strength yet he only put up 17 reps! That is simply awful.

the bench press is just a shoulder movement...people look at a bench and associate it with overall strength....it's not a guage for trunk strength....it's a gauge for who has the strongest arms (triceps) and shoulders. There are better pec movements to gauge chest strength too.

I understand but for someone as big as Jorvorskie, he needed to put up some better number especially given the piss-poor 40 time.

if you run a 5 or 5+ and you play a skill position it won't matter what you bench or how strong you are.

He could still have been a fullback, but the scouts will now question his ability to sustain blocks with the less than inspiring bench press numbers.

most of your importance and power comes from your quads, glutes and overall trunk at the FB spot anyway...if he was a defender stronger arms and shoulders are more important. The BP is way overrated imo.

Good point. Oh well, he will never be a pro.

I think a visual of the dude is enough to come to the conclusion he's a fat ass that doesn't care enough to put the extra effort in to working out more.

I was at the Shrine game and the dude looked ridiculous. Plus the fact he couldn't get a yard or two for the score.

I think everyone knows my thoughts on Dayne and honestly, Dayne puts Blubberboy to shame.

I agree with Vinny, but the poor bench numbers don't only tell me that he isn't superstrong, because he might be.

Repping 225 is more about muscle endurance than just brut strength. It also tells a person how hard someone has been training. You don't have to have the most brut strength to have a lot reps on the bench.

His numbers mixed with his weight give the indication that he hasn't been working that hard or effectively.

As an Aggie fan, I have always had a soft spot for the J Train. I met his parents at the Shriners game and they were very sweet and excited for his future. They talked about his working out for various teams and were very hopeful about what was going to happen next year. I didn't want to burst their bubble, but I have my doubts he is going to work hard enough or keep his weight under control. It is sad, because he was a ton of fun to watch (not this year) while at A&M.

Back squats and power cleans. That's the weight room numbers I'm really interested in, but they don't do it at the combine for safety reasons.

I've seen J-Train get stuffed on 3rd and short plenty of times. He may have had a better shot at it than Goodson, but not by much in his senior year.

This last year, Lane lost any quickness he had because of all the excess weight. It doesn't matter how big you are if you can't ever get rollin.

Most of all, I think the reason he wasn't out there on 3rd and short was a message to him from Sherman that he would have to put the team before himself if he wanted to get on the field. Obviously, he never did.

I didn't get to watch him as much this year, but my impression from what little I saw/heard was that he was being misused a bit. It always seemed that his best skill was his ability to move his feet well, and that his size made him tougher to tackle. He did well when running inside when there was a little room, but wasn't the type to just "move the pile". I think most people saw his size and thought either "fullback" or "goal line running back", and he never seemed very good at either blocking or pushing his way for the extra yard. In any case, though, I think his attitude (and it goes back farther than just this past year; I remember seeing him throw a tantrum at the end of one televised game the previous year) killed most of his chances.

You are probably right. It just seems dumb to me to demote a player that had rushed for over 40 tds in the three previous seasons.

I don't think he was demoted. He was asked to change positions because it would help the team and help his draft status (because he was always going to be a FB in the pros).

Instead of embracing the move, he threw a fit and came to camp 25 pounds overweight and couldn't get onto the field.

College players are asked to change positions all the time. Some do it because they know the team is more important than their ego. Some don't.

Look how well that's working out for Owen Daniels...backup college QB before making the switch to TE his last couple years, to Pro Bowl NFL TE

Exactly. Instead of being truly honest with himself and admitting to himself that he would be drafted as a FB, no matter what. He got caught up in his own legend and convinced himself that because of his college numbers he could play RB.

He really seemed like a true Aggie, until his position change, when it became apparent that he was just out to get his. He should always have known that he would be drafted as a FB, but he got too caught up in being "the J-Train" and has always wanted to play RB because it is a glorified postion, whereas FB is not.

I am very qualified to be an NFL halfback and I can run like the wind. Ma'am, can I help you to your car with these groceries? J. Lane

he'll always hold a place in my heart for some of his runs as an Aggie...especially this one.

Never saw him as a pro prospect, but it sure was fun watching him run people over for a couple years. Hope he has some aspirations outside of football and does well with that.

Well here's hoping he had his ducks in a row while he was at A & M and has his teaching certifacte in his back pocket.

Henry Melton switched and has a shot to make a PS. I believe.

Melton will get drafted to play DE.

The difference between the two is Melton saw the writing on the wall and embraced his position change. Now he has college experience at the position he will be playing in the pros.
