It never ends in Austin!

Take a look at our local ESPN affiliate and what game they are offering for a road trip! Right on the front page in the middle!:gun:

Look at the size of the Texans watch parties... I don't blame them one bit. I love the Texans. I'm a diehard but... we just don't have as many devoted fans in Austin. I really believe that now. I also worked as an usher at the last two Longhorn games... Titan jerseys were abundant over there. I wear at least one of my Texans hats/jerseys/shirts/shorts virtually EVERYDAY. I haven't met a Texans fan in Austin outside of our gathering at Third Base. Not one. I've met tons of Titans and Young fans though. Our following just isn't consistent. It sucks but that's just how it is.

We wanted to prove a point with the K-EYE SUCKS campaign and we got off to a GREAT start but it failed miserably. Well... I think it did. I don't know... they're even having trouble setting up watch parties in Houston. Yankee had to offer up free swag in order to entice people to come. I don't know... too many people are fickle and I'm not talking about you guys. I'm talking about fans in general. We have to win in order to get our following noticed. It's tough but don't act surprised anymore when a station outside of Austin offers up something Titans related. They really do have more fans for them than us.

Looking back it's still amazing to me how a man like Bob McNair, who is no doubt a very smart & successful business man, could have so miscalculated
the popularity of VY and the value of having a local & regional athletic hero/
celebrity as a member of the Texans ? He even chose to give the team a nickname that certainly suggested he expected to attract fans beyond Houstons city limits. But it turned out that McNair really didn't have a clue ?

I get more and more steamed at the Texans FO as this unfolds. There has been a push for Titan fans by the local media unlike anything we've seen for the Texans. The Front Office has conceded this territory for whatever reason. Even when the Texans came to be the only thing you heard was local media laughing at the ineptness of the organization. My feeling is that Austinites that were willing to embrace a new NFL team in Houston were scared away by the constant ridicule spewed by the yocals on a daily basis. When we beat the Cowboys in our first game I though there would by station-sponsored candlelight gatherings at the tower for God's sakes.

I've said it before, it is cool to hate all things Houston if you are from Austin. It's been that way for at least the 24 years I've been here.

I guess I missed the whole part of how Vince is actualy playing on the field part about being a smart businessman. If VY is still playing like he is now more and more of the media will be all over it of course they will all say I had my doubts early on or I was right all a long but they will crash the honeymoon.

Nitro the PR department of the Texans has been a major FUBAR and the locations that they picked for the cheerleaders was a prime examble of it. As far as meeting other Texans fans besides Thirdbase, I hae met quite a few or have seen a lot of gear. Still the PR dept has a lot of work to undo the Casserly/Capers era and create a winning organization and a larger fan base. It takes more than 6 years because of the history of cowgils in this region (San Antonio is also included in this region).

With that said; to Hell with the local media here because they even disrespect their own players on the National championchip team in favor of just only one player.

Walk into any Academy, Walmart in Austin and there are more cowpuke and titan stuff than Texan gear.

I have to drive to College Station to get anything Texan. But my friend who lives in Houston has said he has seen more and more of the cowboys gear popping up in Houston, someday Houston Texan fans who live in Houston just might know how we lonely Texans in Austin feel.

Well the website has changed today, not sure why.
Anyway, this debate is too much energy for me, because I can go on and on forever into eternity, and I really just dont want to. Yes thats right, I am close to giving up on keeping the flame lit other than at my humble abode!
I am a Texans fan, always will be, thick and thin but the marketing and paraphenalia can be left to someone else!

I feel your pain, everytime I contact anyone trying to do anything I get the run around so much I think I am a greyhound race trac chasing a fake bunny.

Now, hold on a minute. The only marketing for the Texans watch parties that has happened is that which you see on this very message board. So, right there, the Servicable and Available Market (SAM) is small. I simply have to believe that, given our proximity to Houston, there is a latent fan base just dying to be marketed to.

I have no budget to reach them.

And apparently, ESPN Austin has plenty of budget to market to UT Homers. It makes me sick.

I mean, let's say I am a Cougar alum (I am not). Do you see the Houston radio stations marketing a Guy's Flight Out weekend to Philly to see K Kolb and the Igles?

It is moronic the way the Titans are blatantly whored out, and even more disturbing how they are lapped up by folks who either have no idea who Bud Adams is, no memory of what he did to destroy the Oilers franchise, or simply do not care.

Makes my blood boil. Not at you, Nitro. Just the friggin' Titan situation. dammit.

This is true, it is very hard to find any Texan gear around here. I searched high and low about a month ago. Even went to the Reebok store up at the Round Rock outlet mall. They had a couple of T-shirts, but had Titans/Steelers/Cowboys etc. I ask the counter guy and he says yeah, we finally sold out, we had stuff from last year finally sell out and we haven't ordered more....but we might since they are finally winning. This is around week 3 or so.

I was ticked off, this guy went on to try and explain the Texans to me, I told him to save his breath, if I am one of the few fans looking for apparel, chances are I follow the team.

The Sports Authority in the Galleria area has this big fancy wall display of Cowboys gear just as you walk in the door and a small rack of Texans gear. I'm boycotting that place from now on.

It's going to be the same way until we start winning. please see my "one table" speech. No question I got goosebumps during the carolina game when third base was packed. But once we start winning consistantly, our fan base will grow. until then, it's us die hards. keep the faith.

go texans.

I would be at 3rd Base on a weekly basis but I can't. I said this before on this board when I got my anniversary, but I'm 15 months sober now and while I know just being there around all the suds won't break me, far from it, it's just aggravation I don't need. This is the one and only situation where I will say the Texans just aren't worth it. I'm at the mercy of all the "Texans" at KEYE who decide what games I see.

Congrates!

We will keep the candle burning for you man!
I can relate, although my hurdle was smoking, and with most places smoke free its getting easier to stay that way. Keep the faith!

Let's face it.

Austin is a college town and will always be one. It is clear when fans can't get away from man crushes of their favorite son long enough to find pro football superior to college football.

Vince is a Titan (traitor) and not a very good qua-ter-ba-ck, yet the Vinni-ots climb in bed with Bud Adams every weekend to see him play. The numbers are astounding.

A professional sports town would never do that nor would they advertise that they were.

We made the best choice with Mario but when we passed on him(traitor?) we lost out on several markets(Austin,Dallas, and San Antonio).I was more interested in making our team better .:texflag:

Exactly. Even Kasey Studdard and that failed LT pick for the... (Browns? Lions? Help?) still makes the local news. What are they doing? Absolutely nothing right now yet they make the news.

Now only if the Cowboys would start drafting more UT alumus, this city would be stalled and living a genuine actual wet dream.

This town loves their Longhorns. They really do. It just astounds me thinking about it.

Imagine that. I hate this city. Fortunately, I wont have to deal with it much longer. Vince Young is well on his way to bustdom it would seem, and thus will eventually fall off the radar. Perhaps then the Texans will get some support in this city.

In the meantime, god bless the NFL Ticket.

I love your optimism and would like nothing more than to see that scenario play out. So, from one "Austonian" to another, a word of advice. VY could fall off the map tomorrow and KEYE could very well keep showing Titan games. Get used to the fact that Austin dislikes all things Houston. The only time the Astros got legitimate airtime from the yocals was when Clemens was playing for us, and even then it was only when he started.

I'm with you on this, but if I chose a town based on the sports atmosphere I'd be as far away from this town as I could be. Sort of feels like we're North Korean passing as an ROK citizen in Seoul doesn't it??

Even more maddening is the Texan PR people have ceded this land for whoever wants it, we're on our own. It's just something that would serve you well to get used to.

I am not an Astros fan and not really much of a baseball fan anymore. However I have always felt the Astros got decent coverage here. I know all their games are on 1300 because I hate tuning that station wanting to hear some sports talk and an Astros game is on. Also, most of my Austinite friends are Astros fans. The typical Austin sports fan is a fan of the Horns, Cowboys, Spurs, and Astros.

To me Austin is just a bandwagon city. The city just adopts the most successful franchises. While the Astros are hardly what I would call a successful franchise, they have been much more successful than the Rangers. The Texas Rangers get zero coverage here and you never hear anyone speaking about them. That is just the way it is here.

I think The Stallions would have been a better name. Maybe even Apollos. Texans, though a great name, is just too local.

When Bud Adams goes to the other side, is there anyway the Texans can get the Oiler history back? Maybe a re-vote?

Very true. Even when I lived in DFW for a short amount of time, no one talked Rangers. I met more Astros fans than Ranger fans.

Point well taken, Hook 'em. They do cover the Astros on the radio when there is nothing Longhorn going on, that's true. I wouldn't think they were giving the majority what they wanted if they were doing the Astros over, say, a UT baseball game...etc. But the local sportscasts and news atricles are woefully uninformed. I hope Cedric Golden, Kirk Bohls and Co. keep their jobs because they know absolutely nothing about the rest of the sports world.

EDIT: I guess my dislike comes from all this about how the Texans aren't any good and that has something to do with it. Meanwhile if it were the same baseball-wise the Astros would dominate professional baseball talk in this town, citing the Rangers unsuccessful history in comparison the the Astros.

I hear ya. Just yesterday, I took the family to Rudy's BBQ, as my in-laws were driving through town on their way to Houston. Having never been before (the in-laws that is), I pointed this out to the crew. As Rudy's patrons know, they then give samples, ask you where your from. When my FIL responded Houston, of course everyone cheered (you could have said NYC, and they cheer), and then when it got quiet, one of the snot-nosed kids, said "Go Cowboys."

I shot back,
:fans:

And then seeing his ballcap, I asked, "Did you watch the game yesterday?"

I have a couple of touchy points:
1-- bandwagoners
2-- Bud Adams :bat:

Therapy is far too expensive, and besides, I'm told you have to be willing to change. :)

You guys can have Bud Adams. The good thing about fat, greasy, old Bud is that when you slide into bed with him, you don't need lubricant.

As my frustation built about our lack of offensive coordinating, it was eased a lot when I realized that at least I don't have to watch the Titans EVERY week like Austin. Watching them had to be tough yesterday.

Back on the thread title.
Now we have to listen to Jerra on tv and to Wade doughboy on the radio telling all you Boys fans to boycott Time Warner so you can get the NFL Network and see this weeks game.
Like your gonna get it installed before the game.
I love Direct Tv and hate TW so this is kinda ironic.
Hey arent the Texans gonna be on NFL Network? (sarcasm)
I suppose we wont have any marketing here for that game!:gun:

Best quote from GiantHorns:

Houston is only the "home team" in baseball right? This city just adopts the most successful franchises in the state. While the Astros are hardly what I would call a successful franchise, they have been much more successful than the Rangers. The Texas Rangers get zero coverage here and you never hear anyone speaking about them.

So the "home teams" are the Cowboys, Astros, and Spurs. Of course Austin reserves the right to change any of those as success comes and goes with the others Texas teams.

Is that you Hookem?!? Just asking because IIRC you are a Giants fan too...

I was just about to quote that because it is the God's Honest truth.

After reading that thread I swear if I replace VY with ykw it would almost be the same. It is his lines fault it is his receivers fault it is Norm Chow's fault.

I just yank your chain cause you make it so easy to do so, Teddy-lad. Especially with comments like this one.

sounds like you know Bud on a personal level, Ted. :stirpot: :laughjump:

I'll go back to lurking and reading about your commenting on me when you don't think I am around.

I used to be invisible, too, but then my Kindergarten teacher told me I needed to act older. It has been 38 years since and I have had no problems. You should try it.:shades:

Vy jock sniffing UT fans are causing their own problems. I really could care less if they don't want to watch the Texans, then suddenly, they don't want to watch the Titans.

My advice is to give them the Patriots.

down here in the sleepy little border town of San Marcos, we got both CBS feeds and SA, supposedly Cowboys Country showed the Texans game.

so I got to watch both games at once. It was nice seeing the Titans getting it handed to them. It wasn't nice seeing the outcome of our game, though.

But most Sundays I get to see two different games on CBS. The Tiny ones and the rest of the CBS networks games.

It sounds like him. He made a similar post here and it was right on target.

Not as far as the Rangers getting no coverage. Hardly. They get equal coverage at worst. Problem is Austin doesn't know what a baseball is and both teams get very little, but equal coverage.

I remember not having many problems with Astros on TV/radio when I lived there 10 years back. Since the Astros have a farm team there (Round Rock), I think we can safely say the Astros are Austin's baseball team.

It actually depends, from what I can tell if you have direct TV you get the rangers but if you have TIme Warner you get mostly Astros and on a shopping channel they put the Rangers on.

I get about 95% of the Astros games.

Point I was making is hardly anyone here follows the Rangers. I hardly ever see any people walking around with Rangers hats on. I think I am the only one and it is a hat for the NY Rangers, not the Texas Rangers. I see Astros hats all the time.

Now that I agree with you completely.
