Look at the size of the Texans watch parties... I don't blame them one bit. I love the Texans. I'm a diehard but... we just don't have as many devoted fans in Austin. I really believe that now. I also worked as an usher at the last two Longhorn games... Titan jerseys were abundant over there. I wear at least one of my Texans hats/jerseys/shirts/shorts virtually EVERYDAY. I haven't met a Texans fan in Austin outside of our gathering at Third Base. Not one. I've met tons of Titans and Young fans though. Our following just isn't consistent. It sucks but that's just how it is.Take a look at our local ESPN affiliate and what game they are offering for a road trip! Right on the front page in the middle!![]()

Well the website has changed today, not sure why.
Anyway, this debate is too much energy for me, because I can go on and on forever into eternity, and I really just dont want to. Yes thats right, I am close to giving up on keeping the flame lit other than at my humble abode!
I am a Texans fan, always will be, thick and thin but the marketing and paraphenalia can be left to someone else!

We wanted to prove a point with the K-EYE SUCKS campaign and we got off to a GREAT start but it failed miserably. Well... I think it did. I don't know... they're even having trouble setting up watch parties in Houston. Yankee had to offer up free swag in order to entice people to come. I don't know... too many people are fickle and I'm not talking about you guys. I'm talking about fans in general. We have to win in order to get our following noticed. It's tough but don't act surprised anymore when a station outside of Austin offers up something Titans related. They really do have more fans for them than us.

Walk into any Academy, Walmart in Austin and there are more cowpuke and titan stuff than Texan gear.
I have to drive to College Station to get anything Texan. But my friend who lives in Houston has said he has seen more and more of the cowboys gear popping up in Houston, someday Houston Texan fans who live in Houston just might know how we lonely Texans in Austin feel.

I would be at 3rd Base on a weekly basis but I can't. I said this before on this board when I got my anniversary, but I'm 15 months sober now and while I know just being there around all the suds won't break me, far from it, it's just aggravation I don't need. This is the one and only situation where I will say the Texans just aren't worth it. I'm at the mercy of all the "Texans" at KEYE who decide what games I see.

Let's face it.
Austin is a college town and will always be one. It is clear when fans can't get away from man crushes of their favorite son long enough to find pro football superior to college football.
Vince is a Titan (traitor) and not a very good qua-ter-ba-ck, yet the Vinni-ots climb in bed with Bud Adams every weekend to see him play. The numbers are astounding.
A professional sports town would never do that nor would they advertise that they were.
Exactly. Even Kasey Studdard and that failed LT pick for the... (Browns? Lions? Help?) still makes the local news. What are they doing? Absolutely nothing right now yet they make the news.Let's face it.

Imagine that. I hate this city. Fortunately, I wont have to deal with it much longer. Vince Young is well on his way to bustdom it would seem, and thus will eventually fall off the radar. Perhaps then the Texans will get some support in this city.
In the meantime, god bless the NFL Ticket.
The only time the Astros got legitimate airtime from the yocals was when Clemens was playing for us, and even then it was only when he started.
Looking back it's still amazing to me how a man like Bob McNair, who is no doubt a very smart & successful business man, could have so miscalculated
the popularity of VY and the value of having a local & regional athletic hero/
celebrity as a member of the Texans ? He even chose to give the team a nickname that certainly suggested he expected to attract fans beyond Houstons city limits. But it turned out that McNair really didn't have a clue ?
Now, hold on a minute. The only marketing for the Texans watch parties that has happened is that which you see on this very message board. So, right there, the Servicable and Available Market (SAM) is small. I simply have to believe that, given our proximity to Houston, there is a latent fan base just dying to be marketed to.
I have no budget to reach them.
And apparently, ESPN Austin has plenty of budget to market to UT Homers. It makes me sick.
I mean, let's say I am a Cougar alum (I am not). Do you see the Houston radio stations marketing a Guy's Flight Out weekend to Philly to see K Kolb and the Igles?
It is moronic the way the Titans are blatantly whored out, and even more disturbing how they are lapped up by folks who either have no idea who Bud Adams is, no memory of what he did to destroy the Oilers franchise, or simply do not care.
Makes my blood boil. Not at you, Nitro. Just the friggin' Titan situation. dammit.
I am not an Astros fan and not really much of a baseball fan anymore. However I have always felt the Astros got decent coverage here. I know all their games are on 1300 because I hate tuning that station wanting to hear some sports talk and an Astros game is on. Also, most of my Austinite friends are Astros fans. The typical Austin sports fan is a fan of the Horns, Cowboys, Spurs, and Astros.
To me Austin is just a bandwagon city. The city just adopts the most successful franchises. While the Astros are hardly what I would call a successful franchise, they have been much more successful than the Rangers. The Texas Rangers get zero coverage here and you never hear anyone speaking about them. That is just the way it is here.

I love your optimism and would like nothing more than to see that scenario play out. So, from one "Austonian" to another, a word of advice. VY could fall off the map tomorrow and KEYE could very well keep showing Titan games. Get used to the fact that Austin dislikes all things Houston. The only time the Astros got legitimate airtime from the yocals was when Clemens was playing for us, and even then it was only when he started.
I'm with you on this, but if I chose a town based on the sports atmosphere I'd be as far away from this town as I could be. Sort of feels like we're North Korean passing as an ROK citizen in Seoul doesn't it??
Even more maddening is the Texan PR people have ceded this land for whoever wants it, we're on our own. It's just something that would serve you well to get used to.
Houston is only the "home team" in baseball right? This city just adopts the most successful franchises in the state. While the Astros are hardly what I would call a successful franchise, they have been much more successful than the Rangers. The Texas Rangers get zero coverage here and you never hear anyone speaking about them.
So the "home teams" are the Cowboys, Astros, and Spurs. Of course Austin reserves the right to change any of those as success comes and goes with the others Texas teams.

Yes, as you can see I am not very active over there (less than 50 total posts). I occasionally chime in to stir up the pot.![]()
Sort of like Filo_Girl does here?
Easy there, Pete's my bud.![]()
sounds like you know Bud on a personal level, Ted.You guys can have Bud Adams. The good thing about fat, greasy, old Bud is that when you slide into bed with him, you don't need lubricant. TedC
I'll go back to lurking and reading about your commenting on me when you don't think I am around.
It sounds like him. He made a similar post here and it was right on target.
Not as far as the Rangers getting no coverage. Hardly. They get equal coverage at worst. Problem is Austin doesn't know what a baseball is and both teams get very little, but equal coverage.
I remember not having many problems with Astros on TV/radio when I lived there 10 years back. Since the Astros have a farm team there (Round Rock), I think we can safely say the Astros are Austin's baseball team.
Point I was making is hardly anyone here follows the Rangers. I hardly ever see any people walking around with Rangers hats on. I think I am the only one and it is a hat for the NY Rangers, not the Texas Rangers. I see Astros hats all the time.
