That we have signed three more coaches! Is it just me or are we hiring a bunch of coaches? What's the current total now? Not saying it's a bad thing. It just seems like the coaches have coaches! *lol* Good job so far, Texans! I can't wait for the season to start back!
 
Texans name three assistant coaches

The Houston Texans have named Johnny Holland linebackers coach, John Benton offensive line coach and Martin Bayless assistant defensive backs coach it was announced today.

Holland , a Texas native, hails from Hempstead . He spent his college years at Texas A&M where he played linebacker from 1983-86. He was drafted in the second round by the Green Bay Packers in 1987 and enjoyed a seven-year career before beginning his coaching career with Green Bay in 1995. He has worked with the Packers, Seattle Seahawks and most recently with the Detroit Lions. He coached with Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith in Detroit from 2003-04.

Benton spent the past two seasons with the St. Louis Rams. His line opened holes for RB Stephen Jackson to rush for more than 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. Rams running backs averaged 1,579 rushing yards during Benton ’s two years as the line coach. The season before he arrived, the St. Louis ground attack gained 1,496 yards.

Bayless enters his fourth season of coaching in the NFL. He spent the past two seasons as the special teams assistant for the Oakland Raiders. He was a defensive assistant with the Carolina Panthers during their Super Bowl run in 2003. He played in 193 games in 13 years as a defensive back for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins. He posted 12 interceptions, 11.5 sacks and one touchdown during his career.

Holland and Benton is old news. At least relatively speaking....

Bayless is new news.

I love how they craft these things... they say that Benton's line "opened holes for RB Stephen Jackson to rush for more than 1,000 yards for the first time in his career"

They could also say that his line gave up the sixth most sacks in the league....
 
Well, St. Louis did have a lot of injuries on the O-line, including Orlando Pace...plus Marx's system is famous for not protecting the QB very well.
 
before Bayless got there.. they got 1496 before he got there.. and 1579 on average while he was there. Sounds like a real "impact" signing there :P.

I would think that Benton could spell doom for our chances of getting Sherman. Why hire an Oline coach if we were going to get Sherman as our Oline/AHC?


I wasnt worried about our selections before... but now im a bit worried. We NEED to fix our Oline..and it looks like we arent really going "top of the line" in that department. I hope we address the line in other ways... more effective ways.
 
Not trying to be nitpicky, but who was everyone hoping we'd sign to coach our offensive line? I'm only in the know as far as coordinators and head coaches, so nobody really sprung to mind about who would be considered a top shelf offensive line coach, aside of the Houck guy from SD. It just seems to me that we're being really tough on some of these hirings based on statistics. You never know how their unit will perform until you see it in action in Kubiak's scheme. I think the production of our pass game will have alot more to do with Kubiak and Calhoun than it will with Benton. I don't feel the impending sense of doom based on the lack of familiarity with these names that some of you are.

For a while there was talk about Alex Gibbs who engineered the Denver OL and is now in Atlanta--the two prime examples of zone blocking (and not spending 1st day picks on the OL). We supposedly lost out on that when we wanted him to work full time.

Mike Sherman and Alex Gibbs are the two names that have been around.

Gibbs will not be with us, he did not want to commit to full time. He is staying as a consultant in ATL.

We are awaiting Sherman's decision suposedly some time this week.

In trying to mount some defense and provide a speck of optimism to this questionable pickup I will offer that the Martz system incorporates a lot of 5 step drop and pass plays which take a long time to develop. If the O-line is not incredibly strong, or the QB is indecisive with the ball it will result in a lot of sacks. We can be well assured that the system Kubiak incorporates will focus on hitting big plays after playaction and manipulating the defense in order to provide the QB with enough time to throw, rather than just expecting the O-line to hold blocks longer...

The Broncos have spent first round picks on the O-line, George Foster being the latest example of that; but he was a 16th pick, and not the absolute best player at his position in that draft, so the point is still valid. Hopefully, the coaching staff can improve our existing O-line talent, and if not, be able to build with later round picks...

I'm sorry, I got sloppy--I should have said "many first day picks." The Broncos and Falcons have each spent 1 first day pick on their OL. The remainder of each are 2nd day picks, with 5 of the 8 being either 7th rounders or undrafted.
 
OK guys!! EDUCATE this old grandma! Why do we need so many coaches??! Seems like Kubiak is hiring a heck of a lot more than we got rid of. Before long, every player will have his own personal coach!:)

You know what, they could be going for more guys just so they can have more eyes evaluating the talent. If they have more coaches out there, they can cover more ground, and therefore would be easier to find the weaknesses of the players. Once the weaknesses are found, they can go about correcting them. I'm not saying that this is the reason, but it is a possibility.

Because last year the board "focused" on 5 coaches - 3 in the sighted target. Now it's "any news" making the headlines during the offseason.
