Is it Just me...?

michaelm

vox nihili
Is it just me, or is the message board suddenly inundated with unneccesarily pessimistic posts regarding the Texans? Not just pessimistic posts, but posts with little or no amplifying data. Posts that are just general doomsday forshadowing with no evidence or explaination...

The sky is not falling... that's just the fall out from the DJ bubble bursting! :violin

The same thing happened last year after we traded up for Babin...I guess it's just that time of the year...I'm having trouble wading through all of the BS being posted around here though...

No it isn't just you. Funny how you ask the chicken little's to support their position with anything other than a naked doomsday prediction and they never respond.

Shoot, I'll take all you homers on then. The more and more I keep looking at it, the more It's crystal to me that our managment of the draft has be sub par. Nothing chicken little about it. I debate you on any point you want to make. You want to start with the 1st pick?

Go for it Ses. You weren't who I was referring to--cough**rhc and his ilk**cough--make your points and a discussion will ensue.

my point wasn't to start a debate, there are threads already going for those discussions. My point was that there are many people who have pessimistic views and don't offer any explaination or evidence to support them. If you are one who's willing to back up your view, I applaud you. That's the way these boards are supposed to be. BUT, there are still many, many people who are just generalizing about their negative feelings...

my concern... Is Faggins and upgrade over Glenn? or even Faggins and upgrade over Buchanon?

Given Capers stated that 44 percent of the time we are in nickle coverage?

I answered my own question.. seems on 3rd down ..we play alot of zone.. so Faggins would be an upgrade over the other 2 given Glenn makes alot more money

i would like to see this, im with infantry tho ... cuz i dont really see any big problems with the draft period, and i am tired too of a lot of posters that come through just to rant cuz they had their narrow minds set on a certain player, and cant cope with having anything other then what said person wanted... i was a big Williamson guy, but i like TJ, and i like Morency and Mathis... i think they will all be solid for us. next year and for hopefully many more... and a big reason people didnt come out and try to say something, is cuz they cant back up what they said, cuz most of the time there is little logic in their original posts predicting a losing season of epic proportions... its just doesnt make sense, but what can you do

C'mon. That's what message boards are for. People get on and give their expert opinion and read everybody else's and shake your head at their lack of knowledge. We're all armchair QB's. It's the nature of fandom.

Alrighty.

Let me just start off by quoting our GM from an interview in a USATODAY article
Baltimore, MD: What's your philosophy: Take the best available or pick for need?

Charlie Casserly: You pick the best player available without question, then you try to fill your needs by making moves. But if you can't do that with a trade, take the best available.

I am to take from this that Travis Johnson was a better pick than Derrick Johnson, yet everywhere else I can find 20 quotes to 1 that imply different. Couple that with the fact that TJ could be lumped into a group of DTs in this draft that were not particularly spectacular. It seems more and more that got burned by trying to forge more picks by trading down. Add to this Bob's take from HPF:
But why then was the theory floated (and seemingly supported by war room cameras) that the Texans instantly deflated when DJ's name was called by the Chiefs? Not that they wanted him for themselves (though they *should* have) but because they wanted to trade down yet again. It seems as if the Texans' plans blew up when the Chiefs picked Johnson and if part of the strategy of taking a really cheap trade down was to then trade down again from #16 because somebody else wanted DJ, it was stupid to think he would still be there at 16.

I will contend all along that DJ would make an excellent 3-4 linebacker and should have been our pick. The guy ran a good 40 at the combine, has a decent wonderlic score, and can shed blocks. Yes we have Peek at ROLB, but it's taken him 3 years now to develop and he still has to prove he can handle a whole game, much less a whole season. Gutting our LB corps and not replenishing it with a stud rookie who has great potential seems to be smarter than reaching for a DT who has had "issues" and whose perfomance only got him 2.5 sacks his senior season.

Even with all that, I still feel Castillo and S. Cody would have been better picks for someone who is not going to play much this year if all things go as planned. I didn't think we were in the position to draft for depth at the 13th slot, we still needed impact players, DJ fits that mold. And I'm not even a longhorn fan. :whew

I wasn't predicting doom for this year, I just don't agree with letting usable above average veteran players leave without at least getting equal or better value in exchange. I know with the addition of Buchanon he is probably equal if not better than Glenn, but with both on our roster in my opinion gave us one of the top secondaries in the league.

i think we as Texan fan have to pull through and accept the fact that these moves are being made. We can question them all we want, but as true fans we need to see what happens on the feild before making serious judgement like Fire Casserly, He's a marked man, WTF, etc.

I know it's the nature of the message board that everyone thinks they know what's best for their team, but i think we should calm down and see how this season pans out. Basically, im just trying to bring peace in this message board before it gets outta hand.

OK, well this can be fun--although I have to go to bed so it will have to continue tomorrow.

1st, I would observe, your are a LB guy (and I respect your opinions particularly on that subject) so you may have a bias for a LB over a DT.

Baseline assumption--the Texans believed TJ fit what they were trying to build better than DJ did. Honest question (particularly as you are a Greenwood signing critic) did you expect DJ to fall to the Texans? Probably not--only a few did and the Texans certainly couldn't bank on it. So, while DJ is probably better than Greenwood (and I would bet if Greenwood had gone to another team, DJ would have been our pick), is the system best served by both of them being at ILB? Or is one coverage guy and one run stuffer better

PS--how is the baby doing?--that can be a pm rather than an off-topic thing.

This is 10 times worse than the Babin trade up.

People need to lighten up and realize the Coach/GM/Owner is not self-destructing the team. Players are getting older. Depth is no longer an issue. The Defense is switching to speed.
Hopefully these are all things that are finally going to put us in the playoffs. But for now, we cannot complain because this "new defense" hasn't taken a snap in the 05' season yet.
I will hold my complaints to when the season starts. Not when the players are sitting at home or out on the golf course.

the knock i heard on DJ is that he didnt shed blocks, that he was a good sideline to sideline runner, but had trouble going against bigger guys. and what good does a 40 time do a LB really, besides recovery, and would you have rather had us pick DJ who every NFL scout i personally, have heard, said is better suited for a 4-3... i like the TJ pick more, he addresses something that is a problem for us, our DLine... with every implication that the texans are clearing house of old vets, TJ was what the doctor ordered... and dont get mixed up with this whole best player available stuff... cuz it only works for so long, if we had the number one pick in the draft next year, and Matt Leinert was the number 1 rated player, we wouldnt be drafting him... so dont take the BPA stuff to the core

I stand by this.

the problem is, is that no team wants to trade for the player when you are gonna release him anyways.. so why not just wait, and sign him for less then you would have had to pay in a trade...no team is going to give up anything for him

To be on :offtopic :jk: , I see a lot of pessimistic posts on here. I don't know if I'm a dummy, not worth talking to, or what, but when I post something positive it takes about a month(or 24 hrs.; whichever comes first) before a reply is posted. So, in short, I think it's you. :heh:

I know, it is just frustrating to see these players leave for nothing.

well yeah but it happens.. we can either be a team that loads up on salary cap vets, or be a team that manages the cap with young talent, and keeps the amount of big pay vets to a low

"yet everywhere else I can find 20 quotes to 1 that imply different."...

If we're going to take the "experts" thoughts over reality...why are the Rockets up 2 - 0. As I recall...the 'perts (all 5 on ESPN) picked Dallas.

OOPS!

The fact is bro, we're fans. Our J.O.B is NOT to go to Reliant, watch game film, confer with scouts, eval backgrounds, etc. For you to presume to take what you read on USATODAY as fact is beyond preposterous...it's straight-up silly. CC & staff are pros...benefit of the doubt is theres, man.

Look at our draft history....our "win - loss" is WAY in favor of win. Minus Hill and a few "oops", we've done GREAT. Not to mention CC's "pre-texan" record.

Don't get me wrong...I was "this" close to throwing my pint when DJ was drafted by KC. But I also realize my own fault which is I dig TEXAS-BASED players...college or otherwise...because they're from Texas. Homer...to a degree. But not when you look at the "entire picture". SES...it just doesn't add up, man. Nice try...I suppose. :loser

that's just cause you're a dummy who's not worth talking to...

I guess it is true that people tend to repond to the negatives first and strongest... just like on the local news... "we love dirty laundry"

That is a personal attack and I am deeply offended. SHAME ON YOU :loser :jk:

Texans84 could tell you that during the draft, I wasnt pleased in the least bit with how things transpired in the 1 rd for us. I was rather ticked off, actually. Compared to many of the people around us in Reliant who were booing, I was pretty calm though. I was also seriously agitated over hearing that AG had skipped practice the day before because he was unhappy and could be traded. However, I feel those were knee-jerk reactions. Having a few days to think it all through, I dont think it'll be as bad as it seems. As I stated to 84 at the stadium, I will hold off on my "Fire ..." comments til towards the end of the season, giving the FO the benefit of the doubt for now. At the end of the season if DJ does as good as anticipated and TJ doesnt, I may be ranting and raving with the resident grouches, such as Ibar and FatBoy.

OMG I just woke up from a 4 day nap and realized we PASSED ON DJ !!!!!!!!!! Somebody please tell me this is all a bad dream ..... How can I go on?????

...yeah

I'm enjoying this off-season .. it's not BORING. :)

Think of the Titans and all the quality players they have to cut yearly. At least under our circumstances we have replacements for the guys.
