Interesting writeup on Derek Carr and his acquaintance with Andre Johnson

Over at ESPN regarding Andre and Derek and what it was like for Derek to grow up in Houston while his older brother was the starting QB and getting a chance to hang around Andre as a kid and telling him he was going to go to the U and be a QB.

"He was just always so nice to me," Derek said. "I was always bugging him, telling him I was going to go to Miami, all of these things. ... I remember him always taking the time to see how my season was going or like I said, he went to some of games, which is pretty cool. Not a lot of kids have a Hall of Fame receiver come to their football games."

I didn't know how close Andre was to the Carr family at that time. Sunday will be one hell of an experience for both of them. There's a mutual respect there that comes off in the article, which is surprising considering the age difference between the two and one being an accomplished future HOFer and the other a touted rookie, but it's yet another reason to be proud of Andre.

Did we ever confirm if it was Derek as a member of the Fresno Mafia on these forums? I know one brother was on here, and thought at least one other family member, always suspected of being Derek.

May of had something to do with Andre not showing up early?

Maybe Dre wanted them to draft Carr at 2.1.

This board would have had a conniption fit if that had happened.

Which would have been so childish of Texans fans. I mean we can go on and on about who's most at fault for David Carrs failure with the Texans, but personally I always thought it was much more on the organization than Carr himself, but what's that got to do with his little brother. It reminds me of when
Mario left and many Texans fans were upset with him because he did not stay in Houston even though he was offered a much more lucrative contract from Buffalo than here.

What it has to do with Derek is many of David's problems stemmed from family characteristics. Derek has acknowledged this.

Would just have shown the immaturity of this board ...
Drafting Derek Carr would have been a PR disaster from a fan perspective. Not just this forum. Can you imagine what the stadium would have sounded like when Carr made a mistake? And he would have made mistakes.

Yes, it will suck if Derek becomes the best QB in this class, and the Texans passed on him. But, I don't think he would have ever had a chance to succeed here. Going to Oakland was the best thing for him.

Guess what ? The board is a reflection of the fanbase and I would say 75% do not want another Carr .

1. Why ... both went to Fresno State . Nothing wrong with that unless USC , ND , and FSU were calling .

2. You still get QB75 and Hulk75 who tells everybody Dave has no weapons and then visit to congratulate Dave on his SB ring . I hear they prank call bowling alleys to .

3. We would pass on QBs because we're waiting for Carr to blossom because he's good people .

4. He's probably been told by his Pa that taking a sack is better than throwing the ball out of bounds and tarnishing your QB rating and completion percentage .

4. He , like Dave , probably live in this sheltered world and doesn't mix it up with the boys . He got married early because you can't touch each others tingly parts unless you have a ring , just like Dave . I see a trend .

5. Roger and the gang would move back to Houston because Rodge is an attention ho who wants to get his 15 minutes again . He'll ride with Derek to practice and be on the sidelines , grow his hair long , and live the dream .

You call it immaturity , I call it trending .

I agree that those concerns would have precluded the Texans from taking Carr with the first overall (if they thought that highly of him), but I don't think using their second round pick on Carr would have been the same thing. But of course I dunno, Billy may not have liked him at all so it perhaps it made no difference anyway.

The USC bowl game made me have flashbacks .

Honestly I dunno what you are talking about, so that's why I wish you would have been more specific about Derricks "acknowledgements".
I saw Carr in his last college game, a bowl game, and he was terrible, just plain terrible. But several analysts liked him as the best QB in the Draft and he had a very strong pro day.

And that's a problem of lack of information leading you to think Texans fans are immature for not wanting or being concerned about Derek. David wasn't dedicated to the game. His time went to his family. His particular style of faith made him standoffish with his teammates. His family was all over practice and everywhere else they could insert themselves. Those are things Derek has in common which he has said he would temper down but how much will he? Those are educated concerns by Texans fans.

Still... O'Brien wasn't here for any of that. And if he let fan reaction cause him to pass on a legit QB prospect when that's our greatest need, then he should be fired.

Now whether O'Brien thought that Carr was the guy for his system is a whole different discussion. And going by the O'Brien fanboy contingent who proclaim that Bill is his own man, I'm going to assume fan reaction had nothing to do with him passing on Carr and that O'Brien went with his talent assessment skills. And those skills told him that Savage was a better fit for his system than Carr.

So you are saying that Derrick shares certain values with his bother David which include their devotion to both faith and family, and you think therefor like his brother that would indicate a lack of commitment to training & practice ? Now had you told me that Derrick like his brother David had a problem with booze or gambling for example, that would for sure be a big red flag. But sorry, I'm unconvinced with what you gave.

I'm not talking about fan reaction at all. I'm saying there are things which directly affected David's play which are legitimate concern for Texans fans which many other fans would not know about. I would hope there is enough corporate memory down on Kirby that those things would have been discussed down there as well.

You can try to spin it into faith and family being the knocks but that isn't at all what I am saying. Lots of guys are dedicated to both faith and family and very successful in the NFL. David's particular brand of prioritizing those things which by all reports is a family tradition resulted in a lack of dedication to football and a separation from his teammates detracting from his ability to be a leader. My favorite QB of all time is Staubach and nobody could touch him on faith and family but he was also committed to being the best QB he could be. So again faith and family do not indicate a lack of commitment. The Carr family's pursuit of going about those things was a problem for David (he didn't get in early and stay late, didn't study film, didn't take his OL out, etc.) and very well could be for Derek. Again, Derek and David have talked about this and said Derek will work on it. More power to him if he does get the balance better but there is reason for concern.

Childish my ass. No way in hell you go after another Carr after all of that. And spare me with the bullshit that it was the organization's fault because a sorry ass QB that didn't play well when he stunk it up everywhere he went.

Newsflash: 1st round draft picked QB's at the #1 spot generally always go to horrible teams that don't have great protection. Expansion team or not, all of those 1st pick players go to those types of situations. Carr wanted to be a family man a lot more than he wanted to be a dominant QB. He confirmed that himself, and he was paid a ton of money (More than the majority of the league) whether he was good or not before he ever played a down in the NFL.

The Texans would have been inviting a PR nightmare if they took another Carr. The chances of Derek having struggles are pretty high considering his lack of being effective under pressure as well. No one wanted to go through that again, and they wouldn't have been childish for hating a situation like that either considering that this is a team that has a horrible history of losing since their existence.

Andre told the Texans he was considering retirement before the draft. I doubt his issues had anything to do with the draft.

This board would have had a conniption fit if that had happened.

& the Texans would have drafted him regardless if they saw a franchise QB in Derek Carr... heck they gave David an $8M farewell tour Bob loved the kid so much.
