Inside the Rams-Chargers marriage as the NFL fights for Los Angeles

Excerpt:

Was it ever an NFL town? If so, can it still be? Something strange happened in the 21 seasons between when the Rams and Raiders left after the 1994 season, and when the Rams returned in 2016. Angelenos, burned by a league that seemed to view the city more as a focus-grouped market than a layered and complicated region, showed little desire for a team of their own.

---------------------

But SoFi Stadium is also a bet -- a multibillion-dollar wager that in a market of 22 million, the world's most spectacular stadium will inspire 70,000 people to show up every Sunday and cheer. For two teams.

Very interesting article and reveals the hubris and greed of NFL owners. . .especially Jerry Jones.

Damn good story, thanks DB. Did not know Jones was originally from Lala land ?
Anyway it's tough to see the Chargers remaining in LA after all how many Republicans want to remain in Cal these days ?
They got a situation like the Texans in the sense that the old man & founder dieed very recently with one of his sons now running things.
Maybe they could really become candidates for a London relocation or perhaps Athens, but they sure
aren't going to San Antonio with the juice that Jones has in these parts.

It would've been nice if the Raiders had moved to San Antonio but in all reality.....the Chargers could have a hellava home in San Antonio.

Which nobody wants.

And did you really suggest that Athens would be a good location? Why?

How about adding another team to a real football city for a god damn change? Huh NFL? Ever think of that? Or does it always have to be political where it goes to a mainstream city like NY or the fairies in LA that never support football?

Bring the Chargers to Houston and we'll rebrand them like they did with our Oilers. Houston could possibly support two football teams especially with as frustrating as the Mcnair led Texans are. We could handle both.

Spot on!

Are you guys kidding? Houston will not support two NFL teams, and yall know it. Hell, the Roughnecks will probably be gone in a year or so.

Now a team (any team) moving to San Antonio would get my support. I would love to have the San Antonio Whatevers in our division.

The Roughnecks won't get support because it's minor league talent that very few are going to care about, in a city with a million things to do. And after all the high school and college and NFL and this thing starting right after all of that, it's very possible everyone is footballed out.

Besides, real football, Sabercats rugby starts Feb. 8 with a 17 week season (16 games with a bye, same as NFL). How you gonna compete against that?

Still going through the article, but I have to give a hot take on this part:
League research indicated neither the Rams nor the Chargers had an overwhelming reservoir of support in the L.A. region, with fewer local fans than the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, Cowboys and even the Raiders, according to some team and league studies.
For goodness' sake, NFL.

For. Goodness'. Sake.

It was mostly in jest but the franchise founder & owners, the Spanos family, are of Greek ancestry.

How could Athens support an NFL football team? They wouldn't even be able to provide a stadium. Their economy went into **** years ago.

Yep. More than anything, that's the part that blew my mind about this article.

They are building a badass stadium that nobody will care about.
