Injury Thread

I noticed Kevin Johnson limping coming off the field and he clearly didn't have his normal speed. Reason to be concerned or is this a part of the process?

Not Texans related but any thoughts on the Bears Zach Miller injury? Reports this morning are that the Dr's are fighting to save his leg not his career right now. Pretty scary stuff. Thanks Doc.

This is what I posted in the NFL section yesterday after it happened.

Watching the play when Zach Miller was injured, would be surprised if this weren't an ACL.............with a throw in of another ligament or 2 in addition to mensicus and articular cartilage damage. His knee look like it totally dislocated.........similar to Cowboys Jaylon Smith. The most important thing to determine immediately is if there is any vascular damage (which would require immediate surgery, without waiting for swelling to recede) and/or nerve damage (typically to the peroneal nerve, that controls dorsiflexion of the foot, and causes foot drop if damaged..............which may or may not require surgery).

Torn bicep for Covington. I really liked him too. Defense can't continue to take hits like this.
At least with this injury, he can be expected to come back as the pre-injury Covington, as soon as 4 months in some cases, but probably closer to 6 months for full heavy contact play and heavy lifting.

He was a vital cog on the line.
Tricky Ricky is gonna have to pull another rabbit out of the hat to help our line.
I think tomorrow is the trade deadline.
Or try Jeffrey Pagan - if he is still in shape.

I think this is what happened to Michigan OT Grant Newsome in 2016 versus Wisconsin; dislocated knee then doctors discovered blood flow stopped and was allegedly he couple hours from death. Surgeons almost amputated but able to restart blood flow.

Aaron Wilson calls it rust. It was apparent to me that he had difficulty cutting, stopping and turning.....but no problems running straight on......more likely a result of his knee (and possibly his foot) still giving him residual problems.

Texans corner Kevin Johnson 'competitive, knocking rust off'

Would you think this is going to be an ongoing chronic problem, or one that can be fixed in the off season with rest and/or surgery? Didn't he have the jones fracture that is the same thing that Sammy Watkins had?

Yes it is. He played on the 2 Jones fractures trying to avoid surgery for too long in 2016. He had torn his calf muscle in 2015 and missed games and was severely dogged the rest of that season. Then mid 2015 season, he found himself in a boot for a high ankle sprain which along with the calf tear dogged him the rest of the season. There is no doubt that all these lower limb injuries fed on each other........just like we've seen the abnormally long recovery with KJo's last surgery which included ankle surgery also. With this I was concerned that he was still having problems with his ankle and foot..........then his MCL. All this can feed into his potential for further lower limb injuries.

Report: Torn ACL expected to sideline Watson for 8-9 months
Michael McClymont Nov 5, 2017 9:29 AM
The injury to Houston Texans star Deshaun Watson is expected to sideline him for 8 to 9 months, a source informed ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Such a timeline would have Watson back by the end of next summer.

Watson suffered a torn ACL in college and returned after just five months. The Texans are hoping for a similar recovery this time around.

The quarterback suffered the season-ending injury on a non-contact play at practice Thursday.

Deshaun Watson’s ACL Tear Coincides With Notable Spike in NFL Injury Designations

The NFL does not need another “crisis” on its hands at the moment, but Thursday’s news that Deshaun Watson (torn ACL) and Andrew Luck (shoulder) would be sidelined for the remainder of the season added to an injury problem that already was a little outside the norm for modern league standards.

By my count, Watson and Luck make eight total “face of the franchise” players who have been lost to season-ending injuries this year. They join Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Browns left tackle Joe Thomas, Chiefs safety Eric Berry, Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and Cardinals running back David Johnson as headliner names who have not made it through a complete season. One could make an argument that Patriots wideout Julian Edelman merits consideration at that level, as does Eagles left tackle Jason Peters.

But the concern doesn’t extend to just stars: The MMQB looked at the total number of players placed on injured reserve at the Nov. 1 benchmark each season for the past five years. As of 7 p.m. ET Thursday, we found the following data from the past five seasons regarding players on either injured reserve, injured reserve-designated for return, the PUP list or the non-football injury list:

Year Players on IR, IR-DFR, PUP, NFI
2017 295
2016 277
2015 233
2014 263
2013 252

This also seems to be the worst year for injuries to premier players in this window, with the next closest being 2015 when Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs were out at the same time. (Note: Our data was compiled by looking at every team on Nov. 1, so some of those players may have come off IR or been added to IR following that date. Also, the “face of the franchise” designation is entirely subjective.) THE REST OF THE STORY

I will not be surprised if Savage shows up on the Injury Report for a right shoulder. On several plays, as his arm was going forward during a pass, it was stopped or met with great resistance in half motion, or it was actually forced back................... a classic mechanism for a rotator cuff injury..

When it was announced that Fuller left the game with a "rib injury," I said it would probably end up being a rib fracture. He has indeed sustained rib fractures.

Depending on the extent (number, non-displaced vs. displaced, + or - lung involvement), he could return with flack jacket anywhere from in ~2 weeks to 6 weeks or IRed.

I read he'd be out 1-2 weeks earlier this morning but at this point I'd consider longevity over this season.
Go play catch with DW4 is what I'm thinking.
Also he might wanna put on a few pounds. I don't wanna take away from his speed but he still has a college frame

Fuller without speed would not have been drafted.
yeah, I get it but seeing how thin he is relative to other players has me on edge. everytime I see him going over the middle I clench. I'm just a worry wart now with all these injuries

Fuller is comparable to Desean Jackson.

yep, I am mocking Anthony Miller (Memphis) round 3. Can play outside but would be great at slot. His catches remind me of Hopkins. Ellington could be one of those FAs that hang around a while. 4 Very good WRs for Watson.

I'd rather have a solid Ol or DB in rd 3... tho this is the wrong thread for that

Report: Texans' Foreman believed to have torn Achilles
Dane Belbeck Nov 19, 2017 4:09 PM
The Houston Texans got a big win Sunday over the Arizona Cardinals, but some news after the contest will put a damper on any celebration, as sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that D'Onta Foreman is believed to have torn his Achilles tendon.

Foreman had the best game of his rookie season Sunday, rushing for 65 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered the injury after finding the end zone for the second time.

The former Texas star's reported Achilles tear is the latest significant injury for a Houston team already missing standouts J.J. Watt, Deshaun Watson, and Whitney Mercilus for the season.

How long does it take to come back from an Achilles injury, and do we have to fear he won’t come back as good? I remember Demeco Ryans had an Achilles injury. Anything similar?

Hopefully it will be like DeMeco's as he was back the following season and gradually worked himself back into shape. That is a success story as we still have Millar, may retain Blue or some other RB next season to share the load. Worst case, we might see him next season but he never fully recovers to play as well as we have seen him.

Honestly I think Foreman might have suffered a career ending injury. Running backs don't come back from achilles injuries. See Arian Foster. Hope I'm wrong.

CnD, I assume you'll be posting some case study data on Achilles tear recovery, but can you specifically search for updated data on the finding that players only regain 80% explosiveness in a best case scenario? I'm wondering if technology has offered any improvement there in the time between DeMeco's injury and now. And also hoping that our RB of the future isn't damaged goods.

Arian had a lot more going on than the Achilles, though it was a major contributor to his retirement. Foreman is young and facing better odds at rehabbing it, but it will still likely affect his career negatively.

I'm scared about this one. His 4.45 40 time is going to take a hit but hopefully he's still as powerful and shifty as ever when he returns.
