The following is a letter I sent on Monday, October 6 to the Texans, SMG and CSC:

"I need to inform you of a very troubling event that occurred in yesterday’s game(10/5/08) at Reliant Stadium that concerns me a great deal. With the start of the 4th quarter and the Texans playing great, a large number of us in Section 637, were doing our best to be the Homefield Advantage. Yes, we are all season ticket holders, myself driving in for every home game from Round Rock, TX since 2002.

We were yelling and screaming and were using the “bud” and bud light’ aluminum ‘bottles’ as noise makers. We were banging them together, banging them on the concrete and banging them on the heavy metal pipe rail in the aisle. At NO time were these aluminum bottles being used against the stadium seating nor were they being thrown or tossed in the air. We were doing this when the Colts offense was on the field and Manning was making his calls at the line. We were being fans.

With approximately 8 minutes remaining in the game, five(5)uniformed and armed Houston Police Department officers ran up the stairs and approached our group. They then began to question one of the folks in our section, asked for his ticket stub, and then wrote down his section row and seat. They said that any more banging of the cans would result in his revocation of his season ticket and removal from the premises. There was absolutely no previous warning whatsoever from anyone from Reliant, the Texans, HPD, or SMG.

I am not sure what exactly the Texans, the HPD and SMG is trying to accomplish with such a brute show of force for something as truly innocent as fans being fans. This group of fans was 100% appropriate, making noise, at the correct times, there was no illegal behavior, no irresponsible behavior, no cursing and bad language, no thrown objects, no failure to follow instructions and no inappropriate yelling at Colts fans. Nothing that could be seen as a violation of the new NFL Fan Code of Conduct:

"The National Football League and its teams are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all fans, both in the stadium and in the parking lot. We want all fans attending our games to enjoy the experience in a responsible fashion. When attending a game, you are required to refrain from the following behaviors:
» Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature.
» Intoxication or other signs of alcohol impairment that results in irresponsible behavior.
» Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.
» Interference with the progress of the game (including throwing objects onto the field).
» Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel.
» Verbal or physical harassment of opposing team fans.
"Event patrons are responsible for their conduct as well as the conduct of their guests and/or persons occupying their seats. Stadium staff will promptly intervene to support an environment where event patrons, their guests, and other fans can enjoy the event free from the above behavior. Event patrons and guests who violate these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games."

At this time, I need clarification as to what exactly the Texans are wanting from their fans. We have and exciting group of folks up in section 637, so much so, that on several occasions, I know fans who join us from lower levels because of the fun and the ‘getting into the game’ we do in this section.
The threat imposed by five armed HPD officers is completely out of line and must be addressed. My 13 year old son, was absolutley horrified, as was I and the folks around us at such an extreme response to something as simple as supporting our team.
I am asking for you to please give me some clarity on this event and why the absolute over reaction, and to what type of recourse, we as fans have, as the paying customer should this situation ever again occur.

I spoke today(Thu Oct 9) to Holly Schweitzer, the event service coordinator for the Texans. She explained to me that someone in our section, a season ticket holder, went down to the concourse and told the HPD about the noise we were making. Therefore, who knows what this fan told the police and therefore the response of 5 officers as they were not sure what they were getting into. That I can now understand. Obviously, the fan who complained could have gone to one of the guest relations folks stationed along the concourse but went straight for the HPD, and hence, the response. No fault for HPD on this.

Holly went on to say how much she appreciated our enthusiasm but the violation was that we interfered with the gameday experience of another 'fan' and that banging 2 empty beer cans together is considered a 'noise maker' and those are not allowed at NFL games.

So, what to make of this? Banging cans together is out. And just be aware of those around you at all times.....you just never know.....

Wear Red, White or Blue!
Be Loud.

This is pretty sad.

It reminds me of something that happened at a basketball game I went to last year.

It was UVa vs a division rival. I think Georgia Tech, but I'm not sure

Anyway, the team GAVE us banners made of thin aluminum that said "Go 'Hoos" or something like that on it. The other side was blank aluminum.

The fans were using the signs to make noise (it was metal) and were shaking them around a lot.

The stadium kicked out everyone who was using the sign as a "noisemaker" because they were illegal.

WTH?

Seriously, they should experience a soccer-match here in Europe... you guys are freaking kittens compared to us :)
 
I know a way to increase the Texans chances on the road now. Alls we need to do is get enough fans to go to every road game, strategically place them around the stadium and then complain to security that the loud home fans are ruining our "game day experience". We'll get the stadium as quiet as a library. What a crock.
 
And this is why I really, for the most part, prefer to watch the games from home.

I'd love to come out and tailgate with y'all, put some faces with names and what not, but when I go to a game I like to make noise and yell myself hoarse. I cut my teeth on LSU football games and the whole point in that environment is to make noise and to truly be the 12th man. I'm not rude, I'm certainly not crude, but I think that fans need to know when to make noise and damn well do so when its appropriate.

I hit one game at Reliant but I don't get the feeling that my yelling was appreciated and I'd rather just watch from the house than have the "polite police" come by and harass me.

In short, if I can't go and be loud then I'd rather just not go.

This marketing company and their "gameday experience" blather is sterilizing what used to be a blue collar sport. Corporate types just looking for a nice day out with the family could be bothered by some rowdy football fans, so let's all sit on our hands and golf clap.

What a freakin' joke that they Texans actually advance this corporate garbage. They seemed like they were trying to phase out the Bull Pen until fans swamped the front office with mail, phone calls, and e-mail. This marketing company appears to care so much about our experience, but they are so out-of-touch with the average football fan sometimes.

This city will never have a "House of Pain" again if people are going to cry to the police about a few noisemakers. How sad that it's come to this, and now you have to worry about losing your seats if someone around you has noise "ruining" his gameday experience.
 
Maybe they should stop piping in crowd noise like they do every time before kick-off. Its sending the wrong message.

That recorded crowd noise used to crack us up during the 2-14 season when there would only be 5,000-10,000 fans in the stadium, but it sounded like there were tens of thousands cheering. Matter-of-fact, it was the only source of entertainment at games that year.

Here's the deal, right or wrong, smart or stupid.

The ushers are supposed to issue warnings to anyone violating the code of conduct. Sadly, we NEVER see them doing it to any unruly, drunk, or otherwise problem causing people in the Bullpen.

The warning triggers a letter to the PSL holder saying you may lose your PSL if problems continue.

As for noisemakers, they are not allowed, including putting pennies in aluminum bottles.

I am sorry someone told on you, and instead of someone asking you to stop (or an usher asking you to stop) - they made a big deal out of it and for the first time I have heard of enforced the warning policy - against Texans fans, cheering for the team.
 
Please, I got reported for screaming too much at the Saints game last year. Im too energetic of a fan, I guess. Damn club section.
 
Football games are for drinking beer, cheering, yelling and getting behind the team....a homefield advantage. Crap like this is just another example of the Wussification of America. Whomever the loser was that told on you...go watch tennis if you want quiet and sports.

I have only been to 1 game because I have been living out of the area (mainly out of state) for years now. I went to the 04 home game v. the tacks. If anyone remembers it was one of the few Texans comeback victories so it was pretty exiting. My old man stumbled upon a 10 pack of tickets so I got some friends together and we were standing up and cheering during the
2nd half comeback (seated about 12 rows up mid field). Sure enough some polo clad "fans" (using the term loosely) asked us in a not so polite ways to sit down, that they paid a lot of money to use those seats. We asked them semi politely to put down their PDA's and watch the game. Ruckus almost ensued until they noticed they we had 10 to their 4, plus I am sure they did not want to ruin the cornerstone of their wardrobe. Game was great, but my fan to fan experience was not.
 
I still want a clarification of what constitutes a "noisemaker".

If I blow across the top of that same bottle, would that qualify?

How about if I bring the Bright Red inflatable "bang sticks" that I have at home that were supplied BY THE TEXANS?

How about when I'm frustrated and pull my cap off and bang it on my seat....does THAT count?

When I clap my hands, can they come cut them off? Will they re-posess the seat in front of me when I bang on IT with my hands?

I hate hearing things like this! I am suprised that i have not gotten any complaints considering i sit in club section where they dont even stand up after a TD!

The thing that gets me is that other teams allow noisemakers. I have seen many fans at Vikings games with "Viking Horns" that they blow in. I hear cowbells during some games on TV.

The No Fun League is just that. The Texans are following their ridiculous rules to the letter which is bad for our Home Field Advantage.
 
I wish Rick Smith would grow some and allow the fans to really support the team. He asks us to do our part, yet the people who work for him keep us from doing it.
 
I must say, it is extremely disappointing and we now live or yell in fear at the next game worrying, are we offending someone and then what???

I will say this, those aluminum bottles beaten together make a helluvaracket, and even more so when smashed on the metal hand railing in the aisle! I never thought of the pennies in the bottle deal.

I also asked her, what is the ruling if we beat on the back of the seats with our hands....she really was stumped on that one, didn't really say yea or nay.

I am very bummed.

This is actually a much bigger issue at games than people think.

I'm glad that the author of the thread started this thread and even took action.

We've had the security called on us by fans more times than I can count and every time it was for either yelling and screaming for our team or because some pathetic whimp didn't want to stand up and wanted us to sit down. The ushers and security has never done anything to us though, because all we're doing is standing up or cheering for our team.

One time a woman and her daughter even put gum in our seats because we didn't want to sit down. Of course she was gone after we noticed, but we saw all the evidence right under their seats. I was ticked off to say the least!

That is why I always try and sit in the bull pen. When we sit near the 50 on the first level many fans especially women act like it's a tea party and give us dirty looks for being loud fans, but we support our team. We go to the games to have a good time and be a little silly.

NOTE TO ALL PEOPLE GOING TO GAMES. If you're to lazy to stand up when someone is standing up in front of you. Don't get mad at them! Stay home and watch the game from your house.

If you don't want to hear fans cheering loud and screaming for their team STAY HOME and watch it from your couch.

If you can't handle some curse words being screamed out STAY HOME and watch it from your couch. We don't scream out curse words at games, but others do and it doesn't bother me. That is and always will be part of the experience., and if you don't like it then watch from your couch.

Houston sports fan as a whole is just one giant pussie........at Astro games, Rocket games, (for godsakes they have to give free tickets away to bring in a homecourt advantage), and at Texan games........this is a sad sports town and we are the minority, most fans just use their tickets as a business venture.........including my Uncle who has 4 seats about 16 rows up off the 35 yard line (fantastic seats), but he never goes, instead he just gives them away to suits.......but I usually get a couple for free (great deal). Anyways, by the end of the game I'm the sole drunken loon in the sea of suits......and every game it's just different suits and nobody watches the damn game, they want you to be quiet so they can "converse".

Luckily I haven't had any cops called on me yet, they probably don't want to piss off the drunk guy :)

They can't do anything to you for being loud and drunk. As long as you aren't threatening anyone then you should be fine. Like I said, we've had numerous ******* tell us to sit down and threaten us to go get security and we just laugh at them. They never return with security either, because in the end it's a football game where fans are pretty much allowed to go a little further than at basketball games and baseball games any way.

I'll never forget the group of cocky old men from GB that were about 4 rows behind us when the Packers came to town years ago. They told us we had better sit down in are own stadium or they were going to get us thrown out and they said it with so much arrogance and confidence as if they knew the owner of the stadium. Boy did they ever get a rude awakening. :spit:

They sure as hell did have some good smirks on their face after Farve threw that floater in the end zone to win the game though. We ragged those old men quite a bit though that game, so we did have it coming in the end when we lost. I liked most of the Packers fans though. They were pretty classy compared to others that I've talked to at games.

Go to a Rockets game if you think its bad at Reliant. OMG talk about a bunch of bitchy whiners.

Maybe they need to have people fill out a questionaire before they sell them season tickets. Find out what kind of fan you are and seat you accordingly. Put all the loud, rowdy, standing, yelling, beer drinking, having a good time real fans in the endzones and the wussies wherever is left over.

I feel guilty. I kind of wanted it to be the guy sitting in section 124 next to me.

He was being kind of obnoxious the whole game, which is bad because he had his lady friend and I guess his toddler with him. So it is kind of stupid.

After the Colts came back, he got in the aisle and started doing this pelvic thrust thing. People started yelling at him. Some old Colts fan dude in front of me got so obnoxious his wife started screaming at him to shut up.

So, I clicked over to those pictures to see if pelvic thrust Colts jersey guy got jacked up. And feel guilty because if some Colts fan was going to get jacked up, he would have been a good candidate. Really, there is some behavior you really shouldn't do in opposing team stadiums.

Jeff Van Gundy paid for a section of tickets in the lower level to put Rowdy fans there. The lower level tickets in the club zone on the sidelines are so expensive that few individuals could ever afford tickets there. They are all corporate tickets. I've been given those tickets before and most of the bozos stay up in the bar. I never understood people who go to sporting events to watch the game on TV in the bar. It is clearly people who are going "for free" so that they don't care if they are using the tickets or not.

I don't know if Colts fans would have gotten away with that if my friends and I were at the game witnessing that. We would have booed the hell out of him. I don't think it's right for anyone to go to another team's stadium and act all obnoxious like an ass. It's alright to cheer and root for your team, but don't be a total ass about it.

Oooops, I'm being hypocritical. I forgot about how I tore up the Cowboys navy blue finger and threw it all over the place that they sell at games in front of hundreds of Cowboys fans when the Texans played them at Texas Stadium two years ago. I went nuts at that game. I couldn't help it. :kingkong:
 
One of the reasons I like my section is that most of the people there are there every game and have been for years. We all know each other now and we all know we're there to watch the game and be fans and do what fans do.

We cheer, scream, I freaking high five people 4 rows behind me.

There are a few seats around where different people are there for each game and if they've got a problem with football fans being football fans, well, I really don't give a flip. They won't be there next game, if ever.

I can promise you though, if some weasel whinebag crybaby goes tattling that we're (I'm) being too loud, or "upsetting their game day experience" by being a fan of my team, then they will have to taser me to get me out of there. 'Cause I'll be damned if the Texans support some whiner that will probably never step inside that building again over a FAN who has never missed a game and is there doing all he can to help with their home field advantage THAT THE TEXANS PROMOTE, yes, you'll have to light me up like a freaking Christmas tree.

I'm all for anyone coming to experience a game in person, but they need to understand that this isn't a book club. IT'S A FOOTBALL GAME!!! The atmosphere at football game is loud, lots of screaming on D, jumping up and down, high fiving, making noise and all that jazz. If you find that experience is not for you, then you don't have to come back. No biggie. But you don't have to ruin it for people who are there every game and do it the way it's supposed to be done, by going and complaining to the freaking cops, even when it's still probably going to be the last game you attend anyway.

Unfortunately though, there are plenty of jackholes like that. They got their tickets for free, will probably never step inside that building again, but they're going to complain about someone who's there every damn game AND PAYS HIS WAY IN.

We gave up our tickets this year due to some of our group getting married, having children etc. So we decided to go to a few games and sit lower than where our seats previously were. We got tickets for this past Sundays game down by where the Texans enter the field. We got yelled at and cussed at for standing and cheering. The more they cussed and threw stuff the louder we cheered and the longer we stood. I think that may have been the loudest that section may have been for some time.

Maybe I am jsut stubborn, maybe people claiming to be fans but not acting like it makes me mad. But the more you cuss me and throw things at me to try and get me to sit down the less likely I am to do that.

Note to fans that want to stay sitting down and be quiet when there are less than 4 minutes to go in the game and it is now getting tight, the game is close, the opposing team is in front of you, the opposing team inside the 20 (when the TEXANS are on DEFENSE) Next time just stay home, or STAND UP AND SHOUT and root for your TEAM!

When I went to the Jags/Steelers game a few years ago in Jax after the game I saw a fist fight break out.

Also I saw one last year at the texans game, after the game we were tailgating and this guy walks by with his wife and 2 kids who are crying and then a group of about 5 younger people(3 guys) they were yelling at each other and the guy with his family finally punches one of the young people in the face and knocks him out. We had to get in between to stop a BIG fight even though they were still following the family after..it was pretty bad, both Texans fans

Also seen some fights in other cities sporting events like NY,etc.
 
This reminds me of when we would sneak in mini airhorns to the games. Half the people in our sec(607) loved it and the other half would have fits. Security would come up to the section and look for us to do it again.....but by that time the airhorns were out of juice.

Also I really wish that Colts fan would try to headbutt someone in the Yellow Lot. Just ask Cowboy fan that tried to interrupt the Preacher last year durring the Shotgun 30.
 
The Fan Code of Conduct is very broad. And I believe that it is hurting the live game of Professional football. All across the country.
Hell, we had a stuffed donkey in Bronco colors at our tailgate that we could not hang from anything. They made us take it down. And if a rival fan starts something you can't even defend yourself or your family because they will yank your season tix.

NFL=No Fun League.

I have been to Oakland the last two years for the Texan games. One of the guys I met up there and still stay in contact with, said that starting for the 2008 season, no bands are allowed. That seems a bit much. The bands and the people around them are a great experience. I never saw a problem or things getting out of hand.

As to the "incident", I think this is just a trend around football games. I had an issue at Qualcom for the Holiday Bowl last year that was like killing a fly with a bazooka.

From now on, I am going to go football games, but keep a very low profile and keep my mouth shut.

Yep, no amplified music. I think you should be able to purchase a permit and have the bands and such in specified areas. That would make every one happy, but they don't want any one happy, I guess cuz they are not going for it.
That's a shame that you are going to keep a low profile and keep your mouth shut! Where the fan experience? The NFL is squashing it!!
 
There's something very wrong with the Texans in particular and the NFL in general today. I've been following the team since before there was a team or a stadium or anything (like many of you) and I am being completely honest about this when I say that I prefer to watch the Texans on television over going to Reliant Stadium to take part in their idea of a game day experience. My "game day experience" is about the football game and it's entirely defined by how that turns out. I think the tailgating is great but to me it's strictly incidental to the football game. I honestly could not care less about cheerleaders, pep bands, color coordinated "special" days, alternate jerseys, or giveaway gimmicks and the Texans are sick with them. It's like this team never came across a marketing gimmick they didn't fall in love with and that just makes me sick. Every time I go to a game at Reliant I walk out of there thinking I don't know if I'll go again or not. The seats are tiny, everything is terribly expensive, and at times it seems like there's someone standing around every corner waiting to tell me what I can't do or where I can't go. Half the people in the stadium don't seem to even care that a game is going on and half of the other half that do are watching said game on a TV instead of sitting in their seats cheering.

When I watch the game at home I don't see how much it's changed. That can be a good thing.
