If we draft DL in round 1...

gtexan02

Working?
Will that make us like the Lions?

Over the past 3 years, we have taken a DLmen in the 1st round. Babin (although originally taken as a 3-4 LB), TJ, and MW.

Maybe we need another force inside, but if this admin wants to see some fan excitement, they better draft an "NFL ready" guy (which don't seem to exist as far as DL is concerned) or something else.

I'm inclined to think that if it possible we go DL again. DT is arguably the biggest hole along with CB and FS. I could see us goung DT or given the better depth at DE going DE and moving Weaver inside perhaps...

And no that doesn't make us the Lions. We fired our crappy GM and actually had a good draft last year, something Detroit has failed to do.

Back on topic...

I could see a DL being taken, and I'd be ok with it as well. From what I read here and other sites, this draft is not a very offensive minded one. Draft D again if it makes us a better team for the long term.

It's a long road ahead of us to respectability and one draft sure isn't going to take us all the way there.

Go Texans!

Great attitude Oak! I think that A. Peterson, Gaines Adams, Alan Branch will both be gone. The only scare for me is that I think Brady Quinn will still be there and I'd hate to see the Texans start down that road. I like the two defensive guys they added last year. If we can put L. Landry on in the first and add Aaron Rouse (S) in the second or even Aaron Ross (CB) Texas and possibly an OLB in the third, I think that would be a great 1-3. Look at the Bears defense and then look at their QB. Defense wins games. :bowser:

Technically, It'd make us moreso the Saints. I can understand the Lions comparison, but the Saints did the same thing with the D Line. The Lions also didn't have to keep taking WRs, but they did. The Saints just ran into bad luck with the D Line with Sullivan being cut and Howard leaving as well.

2000: R2 pick 33 - Darren Howard, DE
2002: R1 pick 25 - Charles Grant, DE
2003: R1 pick 6 - Jonathan Sullivan, DT
2004: R1 pick 18 - Will Smith, DE

easy guys...no harm was meant. just some useless banter. however, i predict that we will not go for a DL 1st round, and you can take it to the bank. the DE class is very deep and we can get very good value in the 2nd round. also, there is more talent overall at other positions.

Great post. I remember Will Smith coming out of Ohio State he was a good player. He played well for the Saints this season too, looks like that pick paid off.

Well there will be more than one DT taken in round one. It'd be nice to set the '08 draft up by cherry picking some of the tallent that's on the board this year and waiting for the class of '08 running backs to come to us next year. Is TJ going to improve his game in '07 ? The top of the draft is loaded with some tasty bits on the defense side of the ball. Be nice to have some one collapsing the pocket next to mario, or a player who will make our front four a rock wall on first and second down aginst the run. I got tired of seeing second and short and third and short myself. As far as to what the fans want...they've sold out fifty straight home games. And ...they' ve got people lined up for the throw aways next season. The main reason we're in cap hell is because of a lot of patching and quick fixes to try get the club to .500 the first five years. The fact that two of our more exenpsive free agents just happened to be DT's and just happened to have the wheels fall off before they made the end of their contract is relivant because ? You build a team from the inside out. Not the other way around. Gotta be patient and build from the inside out. There are no short cuts in this league.

Drafting quick fixes is picking a player who is not an elite player at 8. I don't care what position it is. The only exception to this to me is if Kubiak and Smith fall in love with Ginn Jr or Braum falls to us. I consider the two free safties to be reaches also at the 8. So what you're saying is that you want to compound the mistake by ignoring it, reaching and having the chance at another mistake at a different position ? Now we got Carr, TJ and the new mistake. Can't fix the o-line this year, fix the d-line. But good grief...fix something.

Well as you said Babin was drafted as a LB, so stop calling him a lineman during the that draft. He is a busted 3-4 LB, now trying to play DE in the 4-3. BTW he would not have been drafted in the 1st or 2nd round as a DE.

2nd the last time I looked the team started 4 guys in the d-line. Why not take another d-lineman?

3rd Smith/Kubiak have never drafted together here, so why hold the mistakes of the Casselry/Capers gang on the new guys?

honestly, I dont care what position the draft, as long as they pick somebody who contributes. with all the busts in the Casserly era, we just need people that can play. in a couple of years then we can start drafting for need.

I can agree with that.
