If Chargers picked DJ

if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his rear every time he jumped.

but he don't, so he does.

merriman was slighted by several teams for being a head case. He's played very well, but I think a lot of credit to that SD defense goes to the coaching. Not all of it. But I think a good portion of it. A guy like Merriman "stays on the reservation" when things are going well (wins, playoff chances, etc.) and goes off the deep end when he's part of a losing team. Had he came here, with this coaching staff, he'd be one of those guys who grabs the first reporter he can find so he can become a TO wannabe.

That's my opinion. Winning keeps everybody happy, especially the loonies.

Travis Johnson needs to ratchet up his level of play next year or he'll go down as a bust. I see him doing better and being in on more plays and helping to free up the other defensive players on our team...but I want to see some highlight stuff from this guy.

I never heard any of those reports, all I heard was he was a class act guy with a huge and contagious smile.

In regards to TJ, he will develop. He will not ever warent the 16th overall pick IMO, but will be a solid foundation for our D. He is not a playmaker, but rather was the benificary of one good season on a team that rarely produces NFL quality.

For those of you looking for the next Shawn Merriman, look no further than Manny Lawson.

Are you saying that FSU rarely produces NFL quality players? Sanders, Warrick, Derrick Brooks, T. Buckley, Brad Johnson, Both Boulwares, Walter Jones, Warrick Dunn, Tra Thomas, Samari Rolle, Corey Simon, Coles, Javon Walker, Boldin, Janikowski, Greg Jones, and that's just off the top of my head at 5 am. I'd agree that they may not produce the top tier talent at the same pace as their rival Miami, but they still put quite a few NFL quality players into the NFL.

As for TJ I think he, as is most of our defense, is a victim of a poor coaching staff. He has the benefit, however, of not having to look forward to 3 more years of slow to no development via the Capers coaching staffs handling of young talent. Others have mentioned it, and I agree with it whole-heartedly so I'll go ahead and state it once again. TJ's full potential won't be seen until the Texans defense goes to a 4-3 look. Sure he can play and have success as a 3-4 DE, but you won't see the same kinds of highlight plays you'd see from him as a 4-3 DT where he would get one on one matchups more often and he'd better be able to utilize his quickness.

The only knock on Merriman I heard going into the draft was questioning wether his knees would hold up for his size/speed. Doesnt seem to be a problem yet.

After trading away a few picks to move up to get Babin then watching him have a pretty decent rookie season, I don't think they were willing/ready to invest in another 1st round LB.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing though.
