ideas for Texans draft

I was wondering what many of you thought. I know we need CB, DT, S,RB Guards, Center but what happens if a QB, say Case Keenum, or Zac Robinson or a WR, say Jordan Shipley or Jacoby Ford fell to us in a later round? Those are just some hypothetical names but there could be some good talent at these positions fall.

Now here me out. If I'm not mistaken, this coming year will be Matt's final year of his contract or close to it. Should/could we be getting a QB to groom for the possibility that Schaub ends up not being the man?

Also, I know that WR is probably one of the two strengths of our team but Walter hasn't impressed this season, DA has shown us the best we are going to ever see from him, Jacoby doesn't act like a pro all the time, and Andre Davis is more of a special teams stand out as a returner and gunner. To me this says we should get a WR in a pretty deep draft for WRs.

You hit on our needs pretty well but you must remember that not all positions can be filled with top draft pick talent so sacrifices must be made. I think another RB and FS would be nice but honestly both could be sacrificed to later round talent, we've got adequate RB's and Eugene Wilson is adequate as well at FS. A late round QB to groom for the future wouldn't be a bad idea or WR either since Davis is hopefully gone after this season, JJ just seems to immature, and Kevin Walter is a FA. I wouldn't make QB or WR a priority though, only in the 5th round or later if someone good falls.

If one of the top FSs fall into our lap then I would say jump on it, but IMO opinion we need a DT and a CB more than FS. I would love to see us address one of those 3 positions with our top pick, then LG and RG in round 2 and 3.

no to drafting a quarterback highly. schaub's playing too well not to attempt re-signing, and we already have orlovsky as someone we're trying to groom.

if shipley were available in the 3rd or later, or possibly even the 2nd (i dont know where he's grading out), i'd be all for bringing him in. while not a need position, i think it's fair to assume that he'd be starting by his first or second season at receiver (ahead of anderson, jones, and davis through camp and working on walter's job as a rookie), and would take over return duties right away. our passing game is our biggest strength, but like the saints taking meachem or indy taking gonzalez and collie, if we have a chance to keep building on that area with a solid upgrade i think we should take it. i dont know the other names at receiver, but if any are similar as safe bets to come in right away, i hope we give them some serious consideration.

I cant decide on the first round. But?

2nd - Jerry Hughes DE - TCU I know we have to much money and to many picks wasted on the Dline but I cant pass on Hughes.

3rd - Toby Gerhart RB - Stanford Im on the bandwagon.

Toby Gerhart 3rd round? Yes please.

I'm drafting Taylor Mays 1st. No doubt about it. Big, fast, freight trainin' mofo. FS deluxe. Linebacker with corner speed. That's a freak, plus we did really well with our last big, fast, freight trainin' mofo from USC.

The picture is becoming a little clearer for needs this year. For me, now it's something like:
S/CB
DT
Interior OL
RB
QB
WR

I meant the later rounds for these two positions. Of course we don't go this round in the 1st or 2nd.

That's what he is, a Linebacker according to most reports.

Mays ain't playing FS in the NFL. He has in box SS written all over him. He has been very disappointing considering his physical attributes.

They have to fix the O-Line. Matty Ice Pack will injure something that can't be glued back into place if he spends another year getting hit 100+ times. A couple of big maulers couldn't hurt the run game either.

After that I think both safeties need to be addressed. Wilson is solid in coverage, but can't tackle, and he misses 10 games every year with injuries. I know everyone loves Pollard, but he is a major liability in coverage. With our linebackers being so weak in coverage you can't have a DB behind them who is just as bad.

They have to find a way to improve the passrush. We're near the bottom of the league every year. A big NT who can collapse the pocket, and keep the QB in the rushing lanes for our DEs would help more than anything, but a real stud DE opposite Mario wouldn't hurt.

I'll pretend like I'm upset with a Mays-Ryans-Cushing middle. Presents some options for deceptive nickel packages as well.

USC has been very disappointing alltogether.

Thats what I was thinking. If Mays could bulk up more.

Wouldn't have to be too much, he goes about 6'3'' 230 right?

Sure could make a case for going 3/4 with him as a LBer too.

Mays-Ryans-Cushing-Barwin is one fast, slobberknocking LBer group. I bet we could even pull a pass rush out of that hat.

Wait I thought that's what they tried to do this year.

:sarcasm:

Actually, if we do go to a 3-4 that would be pretty tight. But I would swap Cush and Mays.

We should be targeting Shipley in the later rounds in my opinion.

Weren't you big on Quan Cosby last year? You were basically saying the same thing about him that you are about Shipley now. I didn't agree with you back then, but I agree with you now.

Problem is that Shipley won't last long. That guy has Wes Welker written all over him. A little less quickness than Welker, but more deep speed than Welker. I'd like to have him on the Texans as a slot receiver going into the future. Shipley's got Welker hands and route running ability.

I wonder when he will be chosen. I'd take him in the 4th round.

If I had to pinpoint one thing that is killing the Texans right now it is the running game. I'd target a tough running back like Dwyer in the first round, and get some O lineman that fit whatever blocking scheme this new coach is going to want to run. We need to draft a tackle badly. Behind Winston and Brown we have nothing, and both of those guys haven't exactly been spectacular at any points of their careers. Brown is better than Winston and it is only year 2 for him.

After Dywer, I would target a FS and a CB in round 2 and round 3. Round 4, I would look for line help. Either O line or Dline (preferably DT). Same deal in the 5th Round. Round 6 and 7, I would look at punters and BPA.

I was very high on Cosby for a 6th or 7th pick last year. I would expect Shipley to have a 4-6 round grade. He brings a lot to the table - hands, good speed, PR/KR.

I guarantee you Peyton is going to ask to draft Shipley. He fits the prototypical WR in Indy. Why else was he at The Red River Shootout!?

I can wait a year on FS and try to get Earl Thomas. He might be suited for CB in the pros, but I like him better than Mays. Berry will be gone before the Texans draft. At least I hope we don't draft early enough to get him. Mays could be gone as well.

Part of the reason Thomas is returning to school for another year is because he wants to add size and strength.

He would like to play FS in the NFL but right now he projects as a CB (a pretty good one). Hell, he plays CB in many of our packages anyway.

Texans are tracking into a top 10 pick, Haden should be available. Even might have a shot @ LT Russell Okung, Oklahoma State which would kill two birds with one stone, upgrade LT & kick Brown to LG replacing Studdard.

Now that would be awesome with Okung or hell even Berry might fall due to needs of other teams. I would say that for the Texans to get these players they would have to lose all of the remaining games and I dont want that at all.
