I want Wade Phillips

Grid

All Pro
Im about convinced that Wade Phillips is the guy we need for HC.

Hes a Houston name.. he could fix this defense and put the talent we do have to use.. and a defensive minded coach would benefit the most from the one strength of our offense, the running game.

I think that our defense could be "ready"..as far as talent goes..with just 2 good draft picks.

What im worried about is if the Chargers make the post season. Unless its been changed.. people will start hiring and firing coaches right before the post season... except of course for the teams that will be in the playoffs. If the Chargers make the playoffs..or worse..go deep into them.. to get Wade we would have to wait for them to be eliminated, or till after the superbowl. If Wade was to then turn down the job.. we would be stuck without our HC, and with the best available HCs probably already taken by other teams.

Just a thought.

Who else thinks Phillips is the answer? anyone?

oh and BTW.. one snag with Phillips.

Here is a "did you know" for ya.

Did you know that Joe Pendry was Wade Phillips offensive coordinator when he was head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 1998-2000?

Wonder if that means Pendry would stay as HC. God I hope not.

Well, as much as he is a well known name around Houston, I don't think he would make a good coach for us. He didn't exactly get the Bills far into the playoffs....

I think Dan Reeves is a better choice...

He went 21-11 in two years there before being fired for an 8-8 season (Heck his Dad Bum went 10-4 then setback to 8-6 right before the Earl years). Those Bills were the Doug Flutie/Rob Johnson Bills as well, not the Jim Kelly/Thurman Thomas/Andre Reed version.

And what have they done since Wade Phillips? Nothing. I think he would be a good hire. He is not my first choice, but I wouldn't be upset if he is the hire.

After all I've done for ya son? I mean, I've explained in detail why we want Jimmy Johnson, yet you go against me publicly? Well, this is the final straw, I'm removing YOU <Grid> from my personal will...<yes, I know him in RL>...hehe Ok, sorry for the rant, my choices JJ, Kubiak, and Phillips, in that order. No, I don't want Reeves as HC, qualified yes, but he's had personnel issues in the past <Didn't get along with John Elway i.e.> that cause me concern. Not to mention, I'm tired of three yards and a cloud of dust. I want a more exciting offense. Now, a plus for Phillips, anyone that can put a defense on the field that can confuse Peyton Manning, causing him great grief is a guy we want. We play that sucker twice a year, and so far, he's looked like the second coming of JC everytime we've played him! But I can't help but lean to a more offensive minded HC, and also the proven winner mentality that both JJ and Kubiak bring to the table. Only time will tell though, and at this point, I've yet to win the Lotto, so I won't be buying McNair out and making these decisions....aaaaah, fantasy football at it's best, ain't life grand? :)

Our problem is on Offense. If we take Phillips we have to get rid of Carr. Carr is not able to lead this offense. I would rather see us bring an offensive minded coach and be the leader of the offense, essentially take ownership. On the defensive side of the ball I believe we need attitude, better scheme and some new tackling drills to go with our speed.

No Reeves or Philips. I want a non-recycled coach.

My comments are general, not just toward this post.

My observations:

When we have a coach who has coached before, we want a "non-recycled" coach. When we have a "new" coach, we want a coach with experience.

Same goes with temperment. We want a disciplinarian when we have a player's coach and we want a player's coach when we have a disciplinarian.

Me personally, I just want the right coach for the job.

Well I'm not asking for a coach with HC coaching experience. Just don't bring the bum off the street. However, I want a coach that's going to be able to leave a mark on the city and the team for a long time. Like Cowher has done in Pittsburgh. I mean I'd like to see us get a young upcoming coordinator who can be a long-term answer for this team.

Dan Reeves is collecting social security.

KUBIAK!!!! or DONNELLY!!!!

You must have missed the last game. Carr led this team to victory, you might want to read the papers or something to verify it.

Carr will be here and consistantly answers the calls by the Carr Haters. If we switched to a west coast style offense then it would be like night and day. Phillips would still run the 3-4 which is perfectly fine with me, but then we'd still have Casserly to give him crap to work with.

We have discussed this before, a half of football is not a trend. Give me two full games and I will come over to your side.

The coaches will not turn over the reigns to him for two full games. Carr is going to have the option picked up. You will have at least another year to change your mind. With a new coaching staff, we will see what happens.

I'd be happy with Wade Phillips. After reading up on his resume, I think he could be one of the right men for the job.

We've been building 3-4 talent, and his preferred defense is a 3-4 (did you see the Chargers against the Colts?! Now that's a 3-4!).

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer here.
Could you explain your reasoning or can we just substitute any name for Phillips for the coach we bring in here?

Hold on a second professor. My reasoning was in there. How does a defensive minded HC, who will be replacing a defensive minded HC, help the serious investment we have made on the offensive side of the ball - DC, AJ, re up on DD and one of the top paid offensive lines in the game.

Sir step away from the coffee.

well by that logic.. how would an offensive minded coach help the investments we have made in the defense?

gimme a break.. just cause a coach is offensive or defensive minded.. doesnt mean he ignores the other side of the ball and that the team should just fire any talent they have over there to keep from wasting them.

what a load of ****.

7 of the top 11 cap hits against in 2006 will be on the offensive side of the ball. Two of those hits are from Walker and Payne who were on our inaugarul roster. The two other have been recent FA signings, Smith and Greenwood.

We need a guy to come in here that cut his teeth on the offensive side of the ball and instill a philsophy that he can implement and install effectively to take advantage of the current investment.

Hey Grid,

I wouldn't worry about the Chargers making it to the play-offs... PIT has control of the wild card. CHOKERS lost it playing Miami last weekend... they have K.C and Denver to play (both are rivalries). I think the Chargers chance will be gone after they lose to the cold weather in K.C. If Wade is the man you want, I hope they stop the RUN in both games! Just becareful in what you wish for.... I just wish we have a Coach that will retire in good company as the NFL LEGENDS! This will take time and support from all the TEXAN FANS!:twocents:

just for the record i dont want either reeves or phillips as our coach. reeves at gm maybe. if i had to choose one i guess i go with reeves.

kubiac is my first choice.

The way they moved Merriman and Foley around confused the crap out of Peyton. The Chargers have a great run defense and front seven but their secondary leaves something to be desired.

Jury is still out.:challenge Don’t get me wrong that was a great game but the Miami lost at their home field is why they are in this desperate position to begin with! Pittsburgh has control of the wild card and everyone else will need help. Chargers will need to turn the table and if they beat K.C and Denver at home, then he will get my vote to be considered as HC. :twocents:

Amen… I just loved how they pounced Peyton all day long! :yahoo: The only stupid play was that interception and fumble back. Why do defensive players who have not made any key plays to date, think they can do it all and score? It was just as bad as that Charger player who tried to pick up the football next to the out of bounds area! All I can say was, thank goodness for LT’s backup running back Michael Turner because they were definitely playing Marty Ball (not to lose) and they almost lost.:brickwall

Actually, the Jags have control of the wild card. A single Jags loss with the Steelers and Chargers winning out, puts the Steelers out of the playoffs due to a worse AFC record. The Steelers only get the tie-breaker if the tie is a "two-way" tie. In a three way tie, the two spots go to the teams with better conference records.

The Chargers lost to Miami because they came out lethargic and lacking energy. It was almost as if half the team had the flu.

...hmmm... a little investigation into this theory confims:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20051216/news_1s16chargers.html

The flu that has swept through the locker room is dissipating, but it claimed two midweek casualties. Williams and cornerback Sammy Davis missed practice because of the illness. At least 20 players received IVs before Sunday's game against Miami.

20 players needed IV's before the game !!! That certainly goes a long way to explain the difference between the team that barely lost to Miami, but spanked the Colts.

Back on topic, Wade Phillips would be a good coach for the Texans. His weakness is his tendency to play it too safe and drop back into zone and prevent defenses too quickly. The Chargers have lost 4 of their 5 in the final minutes due to defensive breakdowns. Wade has certainly come up with some great game plans, but has also been badly beaten by other coaches around the league.

Are there any NFL coordinators or college head coaches that you think deserve a sniff?

Where are we going to find the next Belichick or Parcells?

Wade is like Bum without the personality. Why would you want that?

That's like Michael Vick without the athletic ability or Richard Pryor without the sense of humor.

If Richard Pryor could coach a 3-4 defense that could sack Manning 4 times in one game, id take him too. Sense of humor or not.

Seeing how only one team has ever gone undefeated, the Colts were due to beat themselves in at least one game. Let's see Wade pull that off a second time. Better yet, let's see him pull that off with our rag-tag bunch of misfits.

Chuck Knoll, Tom Landry and Bill Belicheck have the personality of a brick. Wayne Fontes has a great personality. What does that have to do with coaching?

Mike,

Yes… the JAGS holds control over the wild card. My response was Grid should not worry about the CHARGERS (chokers) to go in to the post games because they have tough to rivalry games (K.C & Denver) they will need to win both to have a chance!

Now you really are a true Charger Fan with your funny theory of the flu… I live in San Diego and there is no epidemic here. Here is my theory about that Miami game:

1. over looked home game and past towards INDY
2. had a great ESPN home game against rivalry RAIDERS (and won)
3. celebrated too much and was hung over prior to Miami Game
4. forgot there was another team that wanted to play against them
5. needed something to juice them up (IV's)

Here is the link to the AFC Wildcard scenarios: http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9108334

I like that you are rooting for my TEXANS to win this weekend and thanks because we need all them good luck cheers for this game. However, if you look at the playoff picture, I would root the other way because a JAG win will force Jack to rest all his players for that final home game. Although this doesn’t mean the Titans will win but there will be a good chance they will at least show up on that final game!

As I said before, “If Wade can win out the final two games then he has my vote to be considered for the H.C.”!

True, the Chargers do need to win out, which is something they are capable of doing. The Chargers have already beaten the Chiefs once this year and conditions forecast for the game on Sat. plays right into the Chargers strengths (bad weather = predominate run and short pass game).

Actually, I root for the Texans every weekend. I have a distant relative (2nd cousin - once removed) that plays for the team. When I went to his signing party a few years ago, I told him I will be rooting for the Texans except when they play the Chargers. Go Texans!

Mike, you’re a man of your words… that goes a lot under my book! Thanks for rooting for the TEXANS … I was fortunate to at least see them play here at the “Q” when they played San Diego. I root for the Chargers every time they play against the Raiders and K.C. Will do the same this weekend and I will also root for the Browns just because I smell an upset against Pit!:redtowel: Good luck Charger Nation… just remember, one game at a time! :ok:

I want Wade because I believe it would be premature to switch to a 4-3 immediately next year. I think Phillips runs a quality 3-4 scheme that is more aggressive and less passive/read-and-react than that we currently utilize. Our defense is improving, albeit against bad teams. Our linebacking corp is very young in Peek/Babin and this is Greenwoods first year to play in the 3-4 scheme. Our secondary is extremely young - Dunta, Earl, Brown, Petey, even Buchanon is fairly young (and in first year with the system). I think if we bring in a quality 3-4 coach our defense will be much improved.

I have one caveat to bringing in Wade as HC, we must improve our offensive assistant coaches. I want a quality offensive coordinator, O-line coach, and QB coach. I like Al Saunders in KC, he might be available. It will be tough getting an established OC, may have to give him assistant head coach title, and big $$$.

I would not mind Gary Kubiak, so long as Dan Reeves is GM to give him some game and team management pointers. However, he must then bring in a quality DC, possibly the young guy from the Patriots. We will have to wait an see.

If Reeves stays as GM, Wade Phillips will be the coach.

If Reeves is the GM/HC, I am not sure what will happen. Maybe we could convince Kubiak to come as OC/Assistant Head Coach and the coaching job is his within 2-3 years when Reeves retires (or has another heart attack). It is unlikely he will accept this, but it is a though.

Funny...but you may have something here.:highfive:

I think both Reeves and Kubiak will need to be in agreement when it comes to hiring though. But... anything can happen if you're creative enough!

I am a fan of Kubiak, but have no problem with Phillips. Bdiiddy thing about this. Kubiak as head coach. Bringiing in Jardosky or Dennison for OL coach both are Alex Gibbs guys. Get Brian Shottenheimer from the Chargers as the OC/QB coach. We all know Kubiak will be like Shanahan in his first years and call the plays. Now Kubiak calls the plays and runs the game. Then have either Hoke or Mike Singletery as the DC. Both are intense classy guys that believe in aggressive defense. They both have also ran the 3-4(I am a big fan of). After that keep Mariano as the St coach. I think we are looking pretty solid at that point.

I am thinking bring in Grimm (I think thats his name, O-line coach for steelers) as OC. Then Shottenheimer as QB/Receivers coach. I like Singletary as the DC, however, he does have very little coaching experience. I like our current strength coach and Marciano special teams coach.

However, Jardosky or Dennison would be a vast improvement at OL coach, I would kiss Dan Reeves feet if he can get any of the above mentioned in regards to OL.

I spoke with a buddy of mine last night, who is a former Longhorn and Kyle Shanahan's (Mike's son) old roommate. According to Kyle, Kubiak has not been approached by the Texans. I know that this means nothing, since teams are not supposed to do this in season anyways, but with Reeves and the Jimmy Johnson rumors it seems a little odd that no feelers have been put out. Ofcourse, who knows how much Kyle knows (although his is in the league working for Tampa Bay). It goes without saying, if offered Kubiak would be very interested in the job. Also, apparently Mike Shanahan would be willing to allow Kubiak to take several assistants with him.

Just thought I would pass along to the board.

Shanahan and Kubiak are good friends from what I hear. I also have heard that Shanahan would feels that Kubiak is holding himself back by not taking a HC job soon. He has said he will let him take certain assistants such as Dennison and the DL coach(dont remember his name at the moment). I would like to see a young aggressive staff come in. I know they will have their growing pains, and make decisions that football pundits will find a little awkward, but they will also bring an intensity to this team that is not there. As far as the feelers, Mr. McNair has put out feelers to the availability of certain people, but they cannot formerly offer or talk to any coach that is with another team until the end of the season, and if that team makes the playoffs they have to receive permission from the league and that team, like Cleveland did with Romeo.
