Practice Squad
For MB purposes, imagine this scenario for the Texans in 2007.

It is evident that two positions which this franchise needs to address after the season are at Quarterback and Running Back. Everyone is expecting us to do something in the offseason to address these needs. So, out of these two scenarios, which one of these combinations would you be happier with come August 2007.

RB: Adrain Peterson/Marshawn Lynch (Highly Touted Rookie RB)
QB: Matt Schaub/ Jeff Garcia/ Sage/ Carr/ Garrard/ Huard/ Plummer, etc... (you get the picture)

or

RB: Backup or back splitting time who could be dealt such as: Mike Turner, Julius Jones/ Marion Barber, Ced Benson/ Thomas Jones, Ladell Betts, Buckhalter...just to name a few

QB: Russell, Brohm, Smith, Quinn, etc... Rookie with Carr or other Vet holding down the fort in Screwston

My ideal situation for the Texans Backfield next year would be to have Michael Turner at RB with Ronnie Dayne as a backup, and Jamarcus Russell as our QB in the Wings as someone like Plummer or even Carr holds down the fort. Hey we can all dream a little.

Also, say for some reason that Brohm and Russell both declare, further decreasing Troy Smith's stock. If Smith is sitting there around picks 20 and up, at what point do you become willing to trade up to select him?

RB's splitting time - a "thunder and lightning" if you will
QB either Carr or a vet with the "future" as a backup.

Neither I think we should go defense in the 1st and possible 2nd round unless there is a top tier RB or O-Line prospect that falls to the 2nd. If they are unhappy with Carr and cut him I think a veteran is a better option, and look maybe for a project QB in the later rounds or wait another year to get one. Drafting a QB shouldn't be the top priority in the off season, until the O-Line can show that they can protect him on a consistent basis. Making our defense better, shoring up our O-Line and getting a RB that can make some plays should be where we concentrate on. If we do go defense or Cleveland does take Peterson before we can (I like Peterson btw and think he will be an amazing RB) we could always sign Droughns for a year or two, he did very well in the Denver zone blocking scheme and knows it well. I like the idea of trading back in the 1st and then picking up either Laundry or Nelson and then going LB or CB in the 2nd round depending on what we do in FA. I would also like us to get Peters the Safety from Hawaii in the 3rd or 4th round. Then use the extra pick or picks to get some D-Line and O-Line prospects that fit our scheme.

I like the idea of Droughns, yet don't really think that he would do much more than Ron Dayne. Also like the idea of Reggie Nelson, the dude is a b.a. Pretty much the only think that I would be dissatisfied with in next year's draft is if we choose to use our first round pick on a DT, like TJ. I also think that Justin Warren would be a fantastic compliment to Meco, as a 3rd or 4th round pick. I am also an Aggie, so my opinion is a little maroon tinted, but after watching the guy play every game this year, he definitely has a nose for the ball, much like DeMeco. Greenwood and Orr are just not going to cut it. Briggs?
