How to Get Two #1 Draft picks in 2006

While I love the idea of Vince Young in a Texans uniform, the practical side of me has been an advocate of trading the pick and trying to bulk up our defense, which by the way ranks last in the NFL. This morning I heard an idea pitched by Lance Zerlein (SportsRadio 610) which described the logistics of how the Texans could actually get two first round draft picks this year. It goes something like this:

1. Most NFL experts are saying (and I think most of us up here would agree) that this year’s #1 pick has particularly high value, more so than perhaps in 15-20 years.

2. With this in mind, we swap our #1 pick with the Jets (#4) or Packers (#5), as well as their 2nd round pick for this year and their 1st round pick for next year.

3. With our first pick (at #4 or #5) we then take AJ Hawk.

4. We now have two 2nd round picks, two 3rd round picks, and 4, 5. 6, 7.
5. We then trade up with one of our 2nd round picks and one of our 3rd round picks for a 1st round pick (should be able to command somewhere in the range of 16th to 25th overall pick).

6. With this pick there are a slew of options. Huff at safety would likely be gone, but Hali (DE) from Penn St., not to mention several solid TE’s and OL (for the record Zerlein was advocating for a TE).

7. We are now left with picks in rounds 2-7 where we can take best available.

8. Then in 2007 we have TWO first round picks to use, or potentially even trade up for someone like Adriane Peterson, Brady Quinn, etc.

9. Or, if you really liked Huff this year you could trade the extra 1st rounder you picked up for 2007 plus one of your 2nd round picks this year.

eh.. I like the trade down to #4 part.. its the trading back up that im not too keen on.

For one.. if I traded down to #4..I may be more inclined to take DE Mario Williams. at #5 I may go for AJ Hawk though (cause the Jets would probably take Williams.. but if they didnt id grab him)

Now you are sitting with 2 high seconds and 2 high 3rds. In this draft.. with this much talent.. some great prospects are going to fall out of the first round. Id rather be sitting there with two of the top ten picks in the 2nd..waiting to snatch up who falls.

I may actually be more inclined to trade both of my seconds to move up and get a 3rd pick in the top of the second. Just to get another player that slipped..and maybe save some cap space.
 
Great point regarding the cap space issue. As you say given the depth of this draft (the best in some time) we may be in good shape with just making hay in the 2nd round.

I love the idea of trading down to take either Williams or Hawk, but is not sure the Jets or Packers want to give up that much to trade up to #1 overall. :brickwall
 
I think someone will get desperate, obviously, the top 3 are pretty much locke in (reggie, vy, matt), sitting at #4 or 5, being on the outside looking in will make some people desperate.
 
I definitely like trading down but I don't like using our 1st rounder on A.J. Hawk unless maybe if we traded down to like #10-15 and he was available there, but I'd still prefer to go OL at that spot.
 
I think the situation would not be as kind to us as we would like it to be. This is a very deep draft. The top three players would have each been a #1 pick in probably any other year. I don't see other teams giving up so much considering the wealth of talent in this years draft. I'm not saying that we shouldn't trade down there are still benefits to the move. I just don't see us getting that much. It could happen, but I just don't see any team being that desperate in the draft this yr.
 
Yes, we need to trade out of the first pick. As deep as this draft is shaping up to be, we can begin to fill several holes. Jets or packers are safe bets. If Jets want to swap picks with us, then it's to take one of the 2 QB's. If Packers swap with us it's definately to add Bush. I would agree that either team would be willing to give up a 1 & 2 this year and a 1 next year. I would like to see us squeeze them for a 3 or 4 next year as well. If this were to go down, we would have round/picks : 1 / 4 or 5; 2 / 33; 2 / 36 or 37; 3 / 65; 3 / 66; 4 / 97; 5 / 129; 6 / 161; 7 / 192. In this draft, rounds 1-4 should have strong NFL starter talent which means we get 6 of the top 97. If CC and staff have done their homework we could finish this draft with 8 potential impact players. Call me greedy, but I think we can do better. Reason, with Kubiak coming in, I see this disaster called our OL getting top priority. With an abundance of starting RB's we can definately move one for a R2 or R3 in this years draft. I could see Detroit picking up the phone, which would give us another strong R2 or R3 pick. If Denver's system is everything it's cracked up to be, one of the 3 remaining RB's should be going to the Pro Bowl in 2 years. Now in this scenerio we are potentially landing 9 impact players out of 10 picks this year and beefing up next years Draft to be as strong.

The Texans have to view this years #1 pick as our H. Walker trade opportunity. Dallas made that trade payoff with 2 years of smart draft picks which in return earned them 3 Lombardi Trophies. Without that trade, JJ is still on the coaching carousel and Buffalo probably owns at minimum 2 LT's.

If the trades go down in my proposal, next year offers...2 - #1's; R2; R3; Potential XR3 (from NYJ); R4; or Potential XR4 (From GB); R5; R6; R7. Throw in another potential trade of 1 of our 3 remaining RB's and we can possibly add another R4 or R5 pick. Potentially, we duplicate this years draft in 2007 with 9 impact players out of 10 picks. This is how a losing franchise turns their fortunes around.

In 2 drafts, we possibly pull 20 picks with 18 potential impact players. Sprinkle in maybe 2 or 3 strong free agents and Kubiak is easily on the right track to becoming a successful NFL coach.

I wonder if Coach Shan allows Kubiak to take any coaches with him??? If not, how would everyone feel about him hiring Carl Mauck as OL Coach, now that he's available??? He's a mean dude with a great resume both as a player (OL) and coach that would command respect from rookies and veterans.
 
Carl Mauck is a very good coach, but extremely difficult to handle. He has a Martz type abrasive quality to him. Yes Shanahan has said that Kubiak can take some coaches with him, but he is not giving him all the food in the pantry ya know. I think it would be fair to assume in a trade down we get a 1st, 2nd, 4th and next years 1st, 3rd. We would likely add in a 5th or 6th to make everything kosher.
 
I like your way of thinking. You never know what another team is willing to give up if you don't ask....Heck, if you ask for to little, you'll always get to little.
 
Without getting in the VY/RB debate, if we did decide to draft VY and offer Carr in a trade, I truly think we might be able to generate enough interest to get a great pkg for him. NYJ, NO, OAK, ARZ, MIA and poss DAL may be interested in Carr.

If enough interest can be created and a bidding war ensues (maybe fantasy, but we can all dream) then certainly a pkg of a #1 + other picks/players is possible.

I dont think anyone gives up their #1 pick for Carr right now. Oakland would be willing to deal, and Al Davis says he sees Carr as one of the top half of the QBs in the league. He does understand value though and he will not give up his draft for Carr. I would hate to see Carr leave, because I truly believe he will lead us to championships with the right players around him.

Coach - If Carr becomes OAK's starting QB and performs well, then whatever picks Al invests would not be giving up his draft, but building his offense. Al remembers the days Daryl Lamonica and DC has that kinda arm. With a better OL, a solid RB, tremendous WRs, decent TE and a good OC...OAK could be something special next year. Plus he's a CA guy and that would have some appeal I'm sure also.

I'm not saying it's gonna happen, just that it could be a possibility.
 
you want bush and young it's simple....have a behind the scenes meeting with vince....he goes back to school...a lawsuit insues ala clarett...we draft bush...before the suit can be handled in court...vince takes $10,000 from a booster..is ineligeable...we take him in supplemental costing us next years #1...done

Trading back into the 1st to get Huff or Vernon Davis would be sweet, and a pretty ballsy move IMO. I don't think Davis falls far enough, though, he's a Winslow type TE and there's a good chance he goes top 10 like Winslow did. I would rather us take the 2nd rounder we acquire and package it with a 4th or 5th rounder to move up to the #2 spot in the 2nd round, which would give us the choice of the best 2 players that didn't go in round 1. That would give us a top 10 pick in round 1, and the #33, #34, #65, and #66 pick all in the first day. That depends largely on who we trade back with and what spot the have in round 2, but if there's 2 guys you really want there at the start of round 2, well, it might make sense. It's a longshot, but ya never know.

There's no reason for this team to package up picks to go back into R1. There will be very good players still available with those later picks. Stock up on your needs and create a strong rotation of OL, DL and LB's.

Has anyone else noticed that our OT's seem to be OG's playing out of position??? We can take ALL of our current OG's and OT's and let them duke it out for the OG positions. This would give us a solid interior line with very strong veteran back-ups. Cut or try and trade the remaining. Draft a stud OT, sign or package a trade for a veteran OT and then donate 2 more picks in this draft to the best available OT's on the board. This probably secures the OL for a while.

I'm beating the same old drum again but I cannot stress enough that adding RB, VY or ML is not the key ingredient to building a winner. We have lost our games over the past 4 years with well below average performances from our OL and DL. I would add LB's but between injuries and stupid CC moves this unit has gone from being as good as any other teams to being as poor as the OL. WE MUST FIX THE FOUNDATION BEFORE YOU CAN START DECORATING THE HOME!!!!!!

Who are you talking about?

Wand 6' 7" 327 lbs and Wade 6' 8" 315 lbs have classic long armed OT physiques--they just haven't proven very good at it. Pitts 6' 3" 320 lbs is supposedly better fit to be an OG, but so far has looked better ot OT than OG. Personally, I want to see him at RT at some point.

LOL ... not fair! There's a fine line between ballsy and stupid, Huff and Davis are hot prospects whereas Babin was ......... something other than that.
