How to get DJ

Since DJ has become this year's Sean Taylor for this board, I thought we should just bust a new thread to discuss the possibilities.

DJ could go as early as MIA or as late at SD, but I doubt he gets to us at 13. Realistically, with MIA, CLEV & DAL going to 3-4 defenses; TEN looking at OLB; MIN, ARZ, WASH & DET looking to improve defense--talented LBs will be in demand. DJ is arguably best def player available. Merriman has chance to rise given his incredible work-outs, production and ability to play down or up...he looks like a natural for CLEV, but Savage may want a franchise QB.

If we move up to #2, it would take at least our #1(13) and a #2(47) and probably a 4th. However, we might be able to work a deal that includes #1 + #3 + Sharper and 2006 #3. I'd prefer that route.

Any other ideas.

we just signed chamberlin, and greenwood earlier in the year... it wont happen... maybe a 4th round linebacker is our best bet.

Look for us to trade up if DJ falls past 7 if he does not we dont even need to discuss a trade, I mean lets be honest with ourselves here moving up to the #2 pick is way to costly. If we stay at 13 look for us to go Carlos Rogers or the best D-Linemen that fits our scheme hopefully Spears, but I would rather get Rogers since in the AFC south 3-4 corners is necessary

For us to trade up - it would take much more than Sharper, #13 and a 4th.

I like Sharper - but since we have told him to find a trade, we won't get much for him - in fact, most teams will expect us to cut him - so why should they give more than a 3rd round pick (which would be a lot considering the circumstances)

So, what is the value of the draft picks we are talking about - using the Draft Pick Value Chart;
#3 = 2200

the total value of ALL of our picks is only 2142.
(13 1150, 47 430, 73 225, 78 200, 108 78, 142 35, 173 23.2, 204 10.8)

So, if Sharper is worth a 3rd (approx 200 points), then we would have to give up Sharper, our first, our second and both thirds. NOT worth it.

If we trade up, it won't be far because we need depth more than we need one stud player.
I like the idea of dealing up to #9 (fair value means it would cost us #13 and #78) - then we get a one of the WRs(probably Williams since Edwards will probably go earlier) or Merriman (DJ will be gone).
Williams would be a great complement to AJ - true he is not a burner, but he would be able to outjump anyone in single coverage and would be money in the red zone.

BUT - I don't think we will trade every draft pick to move up to #3 - - which is what it would take.

I don't expect him to go before #7. I don't see Miami passing on Ronnie Brown for anyone. Neither do I see Cleveland taking DJ over a WR, RB or even a QB. Lots of people think he goes to Chicago, but they still need another WR (yes, I know about Muhammed - don't you remember how BAD that offense was when we played them) and one of the two elite WRs is still on the board. Bucs don't really need him, but they do need a RB or WR (or a QB). Tennessee's secondary is scary-bad and they should be able to get the #1 corner.

Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers put up really good workouts and that's really the key here. If both go in the Top 5, DJ's the odd-man-out.

DJ goes to cleveland.

romeo and phil are not gonna take one of the QBs just because they are there. They are looking at charlie frye in round 2. They most certainly don't need a runningback (remember lee suggs week 17) and the WRs are just in need of a good O-line to allow time for their routes to develop.

This means the browns need defense, and the position most in need is LB.

Thusly, DJ goes to cleveland

I guess there are a lot of if's to get DJ to drop.
In the top 13 picks Houston's serious competition for him will come between the Bears, Browns, Cardinals, Cowboys and Chargers. If the Bears or Browns want him, there is nothing Houston will be able to do about it, just too expensive.
If he makes it past the Bears I'd say Houston seriously needs to consider moving up to grab him. From a spot around 8 or 9 Houston would have a great chance at getting DJ since the rest of the stock will have tempting potential to choose from on the offense side of the ball. As someone mentioned beforehand we could probably jump the 4 spots at a cost of one of our 3rd rounders, and then odds are he'll be there for us. Or maybe its just wishful thinking. :hmmm:
