I ask because I can actually see a couple scenarios where we don't get any new starters...Sounds like the Texans like Barber at SS, and I'm not convinced that a SLB taken in this draft will be able to beat out Zach Diles when the action starts...Even if we drafted a Clay Matthews, I'm not sold on him coming in a outplaying any of our currently slated to start LB's...

I believe the weakest position on the team though is the CB position, but the common thought is that we are picking a LB in this draft...I wouldn't be upset with a move down to get Alphonso Smith...That'd be a nice pick up IMO, because even if he doesn't start I think he makes that a more competitive rotation...

Thoughts ?

Man, that's a good question polo. I don't even know.

I don't know how many may actually "start" this first year but I do think we'll see 2 or 3 get SIGNIFICANT playing time. I'm thinking some of these guys drafted will definitely be able to contribute this year but may not end up starting until the future.

I could see a guy like Cushing starting at SLB, not sure about safety, corner, DL or RB. Maybe if we get a corner like alphonso smith, I could potentially see him playing like Bennett did his rookie year. May be a "starter" in nickle situations or something but not Game 1, Snap 1 starter.

I'm very pleased to hear the players (Eric Winston) talking about how much better our depth is than when he first joined the squad. That the talent on the team overall is much better. That's the most important thing I wanted to happen during the first 2-3 years. Now is when that work finally pays off. This year and next year are definite pushes towards playoffs.

I see two starters. I don't care what Kubs has said about Barber, he's only a backup. Right now he's the starter on paper just because we have no other SS in place. If we pick a SS in the 1st or 2nd they will do better than Barber and start from day 1.

I also see a starter at SLB. Diles did ok but he's more of a WLB anyways. The big thing here is health: Will Diles be ready to go at 100% from day 1. Because of the injury that gives a higher chance for a SLB, specially if drafted early, to become our new starter.

I could also see a starter at either RG or C. Myers and Brisiel could certainly be upgraded. But at the same time, continuity is so important for the OL that i think neither will be replaced at the start of the season.

I don't think we're good enough yet for our 1st round pick not to start. A CB, SS, OLB (either side), DT and a G/C could easily win a starting role.

My thoughts:
1st - Should end up starting 1st year
2nd - Should end up a rotation player (Dline, 2ndary, LB, RB) and ST
3rd - Possible playing time and a STer
4th - STer unless he's a RB that might see time
5th - STer
6th - STer or PS
7th - STer or PS

So my vote is at least 1 rookie starter.

Duck ! Last time i posted his name I got blasted.

Will Line backer. Safety. Not including AS....not a draft pick.

Funny, you believe there is a case for zero and you didn't include it in your poll ?

I don't think we'll start any of our draft picks from Day 1. I think we're that good, that continuity would mean more than the "extra talent" that we'll be picking up.

I do feel that if we were to draft a CB/LB/DT in the first two rounds, they'll be a starter, before the year is over.

Here goes
1. Raji starter at NT 2. Rashad Jennings not offically a starter but gets more carries than Slaton in effort to keep Slaton strong for 3rd & 4th quarters 3. Rashad Johnson FS does not necessarily beat out Wilson, but Wilson swings to CB either Reeves or Dunta gets scorched in first few games. This is not likely, but I am hopeful a true safeties speed will help our CBs.

Or in trade down
1st LB beats out starter or takes over due to injury
2. Ron Brace NT or Robert Ayers DE either could possibly win a starter role. *We have missed on FAs before and could do so with Smith.

A true longshot but a dark horse would be Cedric Peerman 5'10" 216 combine 4.45 RB. Don't say it can't happen as no one thought Slaton would do what he did and we really need to reduce Slaton's load.

they call that there thingy reaching.

Hopefully 2, any more than that and we have had us another great draft or another year of season killing injuries.

A valid question. I think it is the first season we don't have gaping holes to fill. We are trying to upgrade and add depth, which is a nice change. Our entire season, for a change, does not hinge on us drafting 'the guy' to fill a huge deficiency.

either most of you have very low expectations or feel the Texans current roster is a whole lot better than I do. last years draft produced three starters without a 2nd - Duane Brown starter, Steve Slaton Starter, Xavier Adibi Starter. 1 & 2 should become starters @ some point soon while all you have to do is hit on one more in the last 5 rounds.

I'm not going to be surprised if 1 or 2 is used on a situational pass rusher... who's not going to start. I expect the other to start.

And I expect the rest of the guys to provide depth. We may get a starter from that group but I'm not going to bet on it. That way... if we do... I'll be happier.

Let's have this poll again AFTER the draft.

I voted 3. Hopefully we get starters at SLB, SS, and OG in the first 3 rounds. I hope also that we get a RB and DT in the 4th that might make a late season start or two, giving Slaton some rest for a playoff push and hopefully pushing Travis Johnson to the bench.

I interpreted the question to mean week 1 starters.

It's a real possibility that we won't have any rookie starters from this Draft, which speaks to the level of talent the Texans have. And finally, its about time after 7 long years !
Still we could have one or 2 or possibly even 3. SLB is a real possibility if they were to take a backer with the top pick and Diles does not bounce back from his injury as quick as hoped. Also strong safety where Barber is reportedly very popular among the coachs but he's also a late round pick with a low investment. The third position is in the interior of the OLine at RG or center where the Texans are known not to be entirely satisfied with the level of talent there in spite of the fact that the OLine played reasonably well as a group last year and made progress in transitioning to the Gibbs ZBS.
