How Free agency effects texans draft!

wolf123

Rookie
With free agency winding down and the texans trade down possiblities becoming remote. He's a look at what the texans will look at for the draft.
Round 1. Texans will pick reggie bush with the #1 pick.
Round 2. With the texans addressing the Tight end position and center position this all but rules out nick mangold and any tight end.
The texans will be hoping for one of the three top wideouts to fall but it's highly unlikely that any will. This rules out wide reciever because their is no one else with any where close to that value.
This leaves the texans with a few options.

1.See if mathias kiwankua or tamba hali falls to the second- the texans must seriously consider taken either of them.
2. offensive lineman- the only lineman thats worth our pick is eric winston, every other high ranking lineman doesn't fit our new system.
3. Secondary help- This is the position that I believe the texans will most likely addresss. Antonio Cromatie, Johnathan joseph, ashton Youboty and Ko simpson all have possible first round grades and will probably fall to the second round.
4. Middle linebacker- With the signing of sam cowart this lessons the need but if D'Qwell jackson and Abdul hodge our their both would instantly improve the defense and with sam cowart loosing range with age this would be a good option.

In Round 3 the texans will look to fill two of the needs not address in round 2.
Such as Daryn Colledge,Daniel Manning, Ray edwards, Derek Hagan.

pretty much the same as yours wolf

1- bush
33- 3wrs, winston, FS, CB
65- davin joseph, wr, cb, fs
66- """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
97 wr,cb, G

I really don't think we look DE in the second round. I believe it comes down to Eric Winston if available and any of the secondary players you mentioned besides youboty who I dont particuarlly like. I would add Donte Whittner from Ohio St. instead.

In the third, I like Colledge (if we didnt get Winston) and Edwards. If we go Winston earlier, I might look Jason Allen here.

In the fourth I like Chris Chester or Fred Mauta from USC. Basicly, interior line help.

I wouldn't say we won't pick Mangold, he could definitely switch over to RG for us, I'd much rather have him there than Weary. That said, I don't currently think he will fall out of the 1st round, there are a couple teams towards the end of the 1st that could definitely take him.

Sinorice Moss has a chance of falling to us, and he would be a consideration but I think we have enough burners out there in Andre, Mathis, and presumably Bush so I'd prefer a bigger possession WR later in the draft, either in the 3rd or 4th round.

I agree with you on TEs, although if Leonard Pope somehow falls to #33 and Winston, Mangold, and the top few CBs are gone they could take a long look at him.

I doubt they go with a DE in the 2nd round. If they're going for a DE high in the draft it's going to be Mario Williams in the 1st round, but if they pass on him look for them to maybe go after someone like Ray Edwards, Victor Adeyanju or one of those guys in the 4th or 5th round.

I think OT will definitely be a high priority. If Eric Winston somehow falls then I think they have to get him, otherwise Daryn Colledge in the 3rd round would be a nice option. I also really like Chris Chester in the 4th round, he's played G and C in college but we could take him and bump Wiegert back to RT for a year and find a younger RT during the next year.

I don't see them taking a MLB in the 2nd round either. Between Cowart, Wong, and Polk they are pretty solid there for a year or two, so I think they'd look for a guy later in the draft, maybe Anthony Schlegel (Ohio St.), Leon Williams (Miami FL), or Terna Nande (Miami OH) in the 5th round.

I don't think they'll take a FS in the 2nd round either. Between Ko Simpson, Donte Whitner, Daniel Bullocks, Darnell Bing, Jason Allen, and probably a couple others, all of them are pretty good and a few should last, but at the same time we already have two young guys at FS and from what little I've heard about their defensive plans it sounds like FS is going to be a key in their defense, so if anything I'd think they'd go after a veteran guy in FA (which they obviously haven't done to this point) rather than bringing on a third young guy.

I think CB will be a pretty high priority too. Philip Buchanon should mainly be a nickel and DeMarcus Faggins isn't athletic enough to keep up with guys and cover them in the kind of defense it sounds like they are wanting to run, and there are plenty of good CBs in this draft. Tye Hill, Michael Huff, Jimmy Williams will all be gone in the 1st, but guys like Johnathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, Ashton Youboty, and a few others have a chance at falling and would definitely be good picks at #33.

My top few choices at #33 would be:
Eric Winston (to play RT)
Nick Mangold (to play RG)
Johnathan Joseph (#2 CB)

To me if any of those three are available they're a definite take, beyond that it just depends on who is there.

Nick mangold has a chance to excell at guard but i believe center is where you'd want him.
Top players texans will look at Top of round 2.
1. Eric winston(first round talent still getting his legs under him)
2. antonio cromatie
3. Sinorice moss(probably won't be there)
4. mathias kiwanuka
5. ashton youbouty or johnathan joseph

What would be sweet is if Winston fell to the second and DeMario Minter fell to the third. I really like Minter reminds me alot of Dunta, good cover man and great in run support. I would watch Buchannon try to fill, on a run play and just shake my head. I really think he must close his eyes when he tries to tackle.

1. Eric Winston (I really doubt he falls, probably gone in top 20).
2. Nick Mangold (likely gone in end of 1st round but would be a nice option at RG or future C).
3. Johnathan Joseph (slightly bigger, slightly faster version of Dunta, not looking real likely that he'll fall).
4. Antonio Cromartie (big and fast CB, missed last year with injury but seems to have his athleticism back and is an intriguing prospect, could go in 1st).
5. Bobby Carpenter (big and athletic LB, not real fond of taking a LB here but I'd be ok with him, he could go in the 1st).
6. Donte Whitner/Daniel Bullocks/Ko Simpson (all fast, physical S, at least one should fall but not all of them, but I'd prefer to get a CB if one of the top few is here).
7. Ashton Youboty (not as fond of him but he'd be an option).
8. Daryn Colledge (not real fond of using #33 on him but I doubt he falls to #65 and depending on who's available I would look at him here).

If all of these guys are somehow gone at #33, then either someone I'm not anticipating falling will or else I'll end up being disappointed with our possible selections here.

I agree with that priority.

Good list..only change id make is to throw out mangold now that flanagan is signed- if we want a future C we could go with eslinger later on plus we already have hodgson. id throw in Davin Joseph- a really good gaurd who'd be perfect for zone blocking- it may be a bit high but i doubt he lasts till 65.

also if 1 of the top 3 wrs fall we'd have to take a look

:twocents: How about the best prospect at OT, CB , or WR . A rated 1st rd. pick will slide to 33 its up to the Texans to be flexible enough to go with a CB instead of an OT .

I think Greenway will fall out of rd. 1 but do we really need another LB .

I have been trying to do some mock drafts, but after the first round it is like a choose your own adventure book. I guess it would be easy to say: Put OT, CB, DE, OLB and S on the board and see who is the best availble at the position regardless of which at the # in the draft you are at.

In the second I say we go with Abdul Hodge or Davin Joseph. I dont see where Winston would play, unless your planning on puting Pitts at RT? I really dont like playing people out of position. Anyway, in the 3rd I'm looking for somone like Cedric Griffin or DeMario Minter to fall.

I'm not sure how much I like Davin Joseph at #33, certainly at #65 if he's available there. I guess I should add him to the list a little farther down because I think he'll be a very good OG in the NFL. However, I think Nick Mangold could definitely play OG as well and I like him better than Davin Joseph. Flanagan is already fairly old and only signed for a couple years and he's another one of the free agent signings we made that I see as temporary role players to fill in until we can upgrade somewhere in the draft. I like Mangold right now over McKinney, Flanagan, or Wiegert, so I would definitely look at Mangold to play anywhere on our interior OLine, from what I've seen of him I think he will be a great OLineman for a long time so I'd be willing to draft him at #33 and play him wherever he fits best on our OLine, even if he has to bounce around for a couple years until McKinney and Flangan's contracts are done.

Like all of these and agree with your assesments, but would add Tye Hill in there also at CB if he fell out of 1st RD.

He won't fall out of the 1st so I didn't put him on there, but he obvioulsy would be a strong consideration if he somehow does fall out of the 1st.

Oakland steps up & trades for the #1 pick. Houston gets their 1st, 2nd, & a pick(s) next year. Starting from the 7th spot, Houston selects:

1) Vernon Davis (WR/TE) (The Texans will switch him to WR & play him opposite AJ)

2a) Eric Winston (OT) or Jonathan Scott (OT)

2b) Thomas Howard (OLB)

3a) Richard Marshall (CB)

3b) Andrew Whitworth (OT) (Inserting Whitworth at RT will solidify both tackle positions)

4) Victor Adeyanju (DE) (If he lasts this long)

5) Greg Threat (S)

6) Chijioke Onyenegecha (CB)

7) Chris Kuper (OG)

Our OL could look like this:

LT: Winston
LG: Pitts
C: Flanagan
RG: Weigert
RT: Whitworth

Given some time to gel, that could be an outstanding OL.
