How about Bum as an interim coach?

We could run the Bumarooski and given the special teams he ran for White Shoes Johnson, he could turn Mathis into an all pro by the end of the year.
 
Bum doesn't want anything to do with coaching anymore. I believe he is happy on his ranch, enjoying retirement. He was the man, though.

Take a look at what every single person to ever go coach in New Orleans did and you'll find the same result. Failing to win in New Orleans doesn't mean anything. Nobody wins in New Orleans.

Bum wasn't just successful because of Earl Campbell. Bum was successful because his players loved him and would leave every last ounce of effort they had on the field for him.

It was Earl right, then Earl left, then Earl up the middle. If Earl didn't bust em, then we had to punt. I remember the "Luv Ya Blue" days like it just happened. So please spare me. Yes, the players were behind Bum 150% in those days. But that still didn't make him a "great" coach, Earl Did.

Earl had a heck of a game against San Diego in the playoffs back in 1979 didn't he.

And of course who could forget Earl's contributions on defense. He really made the 3-4 work didn't he.

Earl was not the only thing that made Bum a great coach. The Oilers didn't score much but then niether did their opponents. Yes he ran Earl Campbell constantly. Show me a coach who had Earl Campbell who wouldn't. If he'd not focused the offense on his most productive player then he'd have been a lousy offensive coach. He built a team that ran the ball and then tweaked it for three straight years to make it better.

I disagree with you and think you should have your memory checked. What other things that "just happened" are you foggy about? ;)
 
Porky and I can take over. We can flip a coin week to week to see who runs the offense and who runs the defense. We'll have a try-out for special teams coach. Whoever drinks 4 beer bongs the fastest is hired for the rest of the season.

Now you are just fishing for an argument and I wont give it to ya. With Pitt, Cle, and Cinn in our division. we were always 2nd best. The road to the super bowl went through Pittsburgh and if you can remember correctly, We could not kick it down......
 
A lot of people forget that Bum had a couple of pretty good seasons (10-4 in '75 and 8-6 in '77) before Earl ever set foot in the city of Houston. What Earl did was help elevate a pretty good team into championship contention. The Oilers had several Pro Bowlers pre-Earl (Dante, Elvin, Curley, 00, etc.) That '75 season was only two years removed from the last laughingsotock season of the Bill Peterson era (1-13). Sid Gilman also had a lot to do with the turnaround. Bum was a damm good football coach and maybe even a better leader/motivator. Ask anyone who played for him.

Good stuff! I was a Cowboys fan growing up and did not notice the Oilers until Earl showed up.

The ;) meant I was just teasing you so no, I'm not fishing for an argument.

The road did go through Pittsburgh (and the one year (1980) that we built around getting past Pittsburgh they didn't even make the playoffs and we ended up getting eliminated in the first round by Oakland. Now that was annoying) but I heard it said many a time after the 1979 Super Bowl (Pittsburgh vs Los Angelas) that the "real" Super Bowl had been the AFC Championship game. The Oilers had the misfortune of reaching their peak at the same time that one of the all time greatest dynasties in NFL history was also peaking.

In 1978, 79, and 80 Bum led teams that were only eliminated by the eventual world champion. Not bad IMO. Those were good years.

I saw Bum on a recent interview...and he doesn't look like he could coach now. He moves and talks like he is every bit of 82

id see that as an insult personally hehe. THat would be like getting Ali to come fight in an amateur bout because the other fighter didnt show up.

You just dont ask a great coach to come in and play interim until we can replace him.

plus there is the whole 82 years old thing :).


and BTW.. id love to see McNair open the checkbook a little bit and steal Wade Phillips from San Diego.

I'm pretty sure Bum has had some type of recent heart surgery..bypass maybe. I think he looks pretty good for his age!
