Houston Texans: Danielle Hunter

On a serious note with Hunter and Anderson this could very well be the scariest QB threat due in the league. You can't double team both and QBs better learn to throw the ball as soon as it touches their hands because these boys won't let them hold it. God I wished we played Cleveland next year, would love to see Anderson and Hunter help Watson get a massage all the way to the ground.

Plus getting inside pressure from Autry and hopefully Newton on 3rd downs will be lethal.

Hunter is coming off a season in which he racked up 16.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles (both career highs) while leading the NFL with 23 TFL. He's logged double digit sacks 5 times since coming into the League in 2015.....with 4 coming in the past 5 years!
Yeah he's def a beast and will create havoc on the opposite end of WA Jr. Got two high motor guys crashing the ends...no way a team can afford to double team either one of them now. And hopefully with Autry playing inside; the pocket will collapse at the snap of the ball.

The pass rush has been addressed. DeMeco wants to create a rush with 4. He’s got 3 guys now who have a high likelihood of winning their matchups and creating pressure. This pass rush will rival any team’s in the league and make the secondary look even better.

If Ward can stay healthy and keep everyone aligned on the back end QBs are going to have a heck of a time finding the soft spots in this defense. I know that’s a big ask so for me safety is still a priority. I would love a smart ready made player like Tyler Nubin to become a Texan. A QB of the defense. Could be paired with Ward this season and move Pitre to nickel role/3rd safety packages. If/when Ward gets hurt bump Pitre up.

Put Fiske next to Autry on passing downs and that's a fearsome front 4. If you want to stop the run put Settle and Davis in. Man Ryans has done what he wanted to do and has really improved the front 7.

Think we're gonna see a lot more QBs making mistakes trying to get the ball out as fast as possible because if they don't Anderson and Hunter WILL find them. I'm actually reminded of another conversation regarding QB pass speed and that Mahomes is regularly over 3 seconds holding the ball. Be hard to do that with this duo chasing you even for him. If Flacco ends up playing for Dolts this year wonder if he will have PTSD from the playoff game. 😁

Just remember that in 3 SB's the Chiefs have had zero holding calls against them

Mahomes likes to move around to buy more time so the key is getting him on the ground before he makes one of the ridiculous evading pass rush throws

Houston Texans DE Danielle Hunter is on record-setting pace this year

Danielle Hunter is unstoppable in this defense.

By Randy Gurzi | Dec 11, 2024

After eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Danielle Hunter signed a two-year deal worth $49 million to play for the Houston Texans. It was a return to his Texas roots and has paid off for Hunter and the franchise.

Through 14 weeks, Hunter has 81 quarterback pressures. According to Will Kunkel of FOX 26, that's 11 more than anyone else in the league.

It's also more than anyone other than Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys has recorded in the same time frame over the past six years. Parsons, one of the premier edge rushers in the NFL, had 81 as well last season.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Hope it doesn’t force a trade. I don’t see him getting an extension here. That money is going to Will Anderson.
Only a trade after June 1st will bring significant cap space. Pre June 1st about 7 million. It needs to be an extremely team favorable contract. I'm not sure Nick will do even that. Hunter becomes 31 in October.

Certainly not at $30M a year... not here
Top Edges get paid and Hunter is a top edge. There's a way to get a deal done and with the Texans wanting to get to a SB so they can get a new stadium I could see Cal shelling out huge signing bonuses with low bases to get a deal done.

Not a long term deal at $30M a year

They can do something like this give him a 4-5 yr deal with an out clause after 2-3 yrs. Look at how the Eagles structure their contracts as a guide. When there's a will there's a way.

He was brought here on a very generous almost fully guaranteed 2 year deal. I’m sure the idea from the organization was that when Anderson is due to extend at the end of Hunter’s contract then Anderson gets the money. And Hunter in his two seasons with the team helped elevate Anderson as a player enough to where he would not require a top paid edge like Hunter across from him to wreak havoc on opposing teams.

I love what Hunter brings to this team as a legit top 10 edge and a veteran leader. But I don’t see him here past this season with all the contracts coming due and what it will cost to keep him. I hope this rumor is just that… and Hunter plays out his contract as a Texan without issues.

We will see, In any contract the devil is in the details.

I look forward to seeing what Derek Barnett will do if we bring him back playing opposite Anderson rather than behind him. And then we have Horton hopefully even stronger this season.

Barnett has found his niche as one of the best DE3s in the league. I would love to keep him in that role.

I dunno but maybe Hunter's tactic will be the threat of a holdout instead of a trade because a trade just doesn't ring true - afterall he's home playing before family & friends.
Who's Hunters agent ?

Given the money constraints and his age…I don’t see it. They need to draft his replacement on day 1 or 2 next off-season. Let him play out the contract this year, and bid him a fair Adieu. Barnett should be the 3rd guy. I like him and he’s great value…but he isn’t special as a pass rusher. Let’s find the next Hunter next off-season.

The draftsperts are telling us that the depth DEs go into 3rd if not 4th round this year. I would be tempted to get one this year assuming the more pressing WR, DT, IOL positions are handled in some combination of free agency, trades, other draft picks. The guy could be rotation guy this year with the idea he could step up in 2026.
