Devin McCourty?
McCourty played most all of his college years at CB and excelled at that position. That's the position he played with the Pats during his first 2 1/2 years with them (after having been picked in the the 1st rnd). When the Pats acquired Aquib Talib, they moved McCourty to safety. Decoud was a 5th rnd pick who went to small time schools. He has yet to play with the big boys in the NFL...........and now he would be asked to learn an unfamiliar position from scratch? In the NFL natural transition from established CB to safety later in a career is not uncommon. I would be guarded, especially at this point, about putting Decoud out there as the last line of defense, especially in a secondary that expects free safety and strong safety to be interchangeable.Scheme will definitely play a big part in it.
New England made Devon McCarty look like a Pro Bowl CB before moving him to safety.

And he didn't even started 'til game 4.
Eugene Wilson was a college CB who was told to suit up and start at safety in week 2, with just a week of practice, and he remained there his entire career.
Brandon Meriweather did not start as a rookie, but saw time at safety; he played as the third safety in the Super Bowl.
So it can be done.
True, but I wasn't asking DeCoud to come in and start (ever).Hardly fair talent comparisons. All came from much higher college competition levels than Decoud.
Wilson was the 36th pick of his draft, Byrd the 42nd pick of his draft and Meriweather was a 1st rounder.

I was merely pointing out that it's possible for a CB to convert to safety.
If he turns out to be just one of the major special team contributors, it's a solid pick in the 5th. If he can play the third safety spot in year 3, it's a good pick; in year 2 , a very good pick.
Belichick likes to take a lot of DBs and sees where they best fit; not all of them work out.
it is not unusual for a coach to single out a player for conditioning. It occurred to Nix (Irish chocolate) but he didn't get message. How did Sua Filo lose a year?
As a rookie he played in 13 games and started 1. He had injury and conditioning issues supposedly and still ended up starting half way through his second season.

And he didn't play well. Many feel that he was not the 1st round talent they thought because of being moved around so early his rookie year and he hasn't caught up yet. You know line play better than I do so tell me what you think of his play. He did come on at the end of the year but...
I'd say moving him so early would definitely be a big challenge mentally. But a lot of the issues that I saw from him weren't mental issues...he just had a tendency to get beat physically.
I can't remember the first OL coach under OB but I don't think he was a good coach. The OL was making basic technique errors that even I could pick up on just watching. Their technique
X has definitely gotten better since his rookie year but I don't know if he's lived up to being 2.1 good. When I say I don't know, I'm really saying I don't know.
Last year at some point I stopped paying close attention to the Texans. Barely watched games. You're not the first one to say he's improved a lot and looked a lot better so I'm inclined to believe y'all.
I dunno for sure but I'd say the great Ronnie Lott is the best example of a corner who converted to safety and in his case going all the way to being a HOF safety.Scheme will definitely play a big part in it.

Ronnie Lott was an elite 1st round CB pick (#8). He didn't transition to safety until 5 seasons later.I dunno for sure but I'd say the great Ronnie Lott is the best example of a corner who converted to safety and in his case going all the way to being a HOF safety.
I think I've been watching a different player or something. The only real way that I could consider that X improved in the last month of the season would be to say that it was solely in comparison to his previous pitiful performances. As far as not playing well his rookie year, first half of that season the whole line looked discombobulated. That was the first year they went from making the calls from the line, to making calls from the QB.
They looked much better after Mallett got under center. Something happened there that got the OL & QB in sync, even after Fitz returned.
I think XSF has looked very good as a starting guard. However, the first thing I look at is consistency & he's been very consistent.
He's shown the ability to do what they're asking him to do (what I think they're asking him to do). & I think he's close to being able to do it 100% of the time regardless who he is playing.
I can see a lot of room for improvement in how he gets the job done. I'm not saying there are no holes in his game. But he appears to be getting better every couple of games or so. Jmo

You were on a different board, before Hooked brought it here to TT.I'm usually on my own as far as OL analysis goes. I was alone when I said Chris Myers was our most consistent lineman (which was before anyone on this board gave him any respect).
I was among the first to call Winston overrated.
I was alone when I said Ben Jones deserves to start (which was way before anyone complained that Rick Smith didn't pay him).
I'm not surprised I'm alone when I say XSF is going to be a plus player on our OL.

I don't know what their plan is, but I wouldn't mind having him covering the TEs some.I've seen LBs convert to safety as rookies. Safeties to LBs, & definitely seen Corners who were good enough in college, but not for the NFL get moved to Safety.
The thing here is that the Texans are saying he'll play some Corner & some Safety. I don't necessarily agree with doing that, but for all I know, it's just lipstick on a pig. They'll let Decoud believe he's got a shot to be a corner on this team, but pretty soon he'll have to realize if he does make the team, it'll be as a Safety.

Texans have moved second-year cornerback Treston Decoud to safety. He’s got size, speed and smarts. Also good special teams player.
Not surprised. Ever since he was drafted it seemed that he was destined to be moved to safety with his size/physicality.
Should compete with Corey Moore for that 4th safety spot.
If he makes it that would mean top 4 safetes have spent time at CB... bodes well for our pass defense!
Just wonder what took them so long to figure this out?
Didn't know that rick smith got "fired".Firing Rick Smith
I still get sick watching Bouye play for our rival.
We're going to need some young blood at the corner positions next year. I can't believe Kareem Jackson is going into his 9th season..wtf happened with the time, jesus
Didn't know that rick smith got "fired".
My bad.. a "gentlemen's firing", kinda like eliminating a team in 5 games instead of 4 for the sweep.
Let's not get into semantics here. It's obvious he was told he wasn't coming back, they just let him save face.
Hopefully

C'mon guys. Does anyone think if Romeo Crennel wanted to move Decoud to safety, Smith would prevent him from making that move? A 5th round draft pick?

I really don’t want Crennel making player evaluations unless it’s Clowney to confirm #1 selection overall. Otherwise just a concise list of traits he likes for various positions.
Rick is gone. It’s history, like Casserly I’m over it.
DeCoud will make it on special teams or as back-up DB if your all good with that for a 5th round pick that’s questionable but fine with me.
We went from having really good CBs and no Safeties (a couple years back) to tons of talent at Safety but the well is pretty dry at CB now.
That's a question that could easily cut both ways. With the exit of Bouye, the Texans were looking specifically for a CB, at very least reliable CB depth. An early "conversion" to safety would not have reflected very well on Smith's evaluation prowess. As I posted after the pick , there was nothing in his collegiate preformance reviews that would make one think that he would be a viable NFL CB.C'mon guys. There is not one description of his college play that makes me think he has the tools to play CB in the NFL. He will lose all of his advantanges if he is not allowed to begin his play way way off the receivers closing towards the LOS (saftey) rather than trying to stay up with or to close on a receiver while his is going away from the LOS (CB).

Of course, like many of the Smith picks, there was a "feel good" story behind the player that was presented to promote the player.
It's his second year, so yeah I'd be fine with that
That’s good because they just drafted similar player in 7th rd. Jermaine Kelly.
Interested to see both Kelly and his teammate we brought in for a tryout Andre Chachere. Chachere was regarded by most draftniks as the better CB prospect but Kelly appears to be a solid tackler with good measurables on film. His attitude was very positive and infectious in his post draft interview on 610. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Charles James on Hard Knocks when listening to him talk. And I can’t help but think the Texans drafted him to be the Charles James with size special teams ace.
