Houston Cougars

So now we're going for 4th and 8...
Rather than attempting a 48-yard field goal.

Because we're down 2 TD's. Desperation mode.
But down 1 TD at midfield we punted on 4th and 4.

It's only the 3rd quarter. 5:43 left but we need TDs every possession.

We convert a first down on 4th and 8. No problem! 18 yards.

4th and 5 at the 8 yard line. Got to go for it again.

Shotgun formation. Incomplete pass. Man...
We tried to lob it in the corner of the end zone.

Those are so freakin' hard to make.
You need an elite wideout who can leap to make those.
I'd rather have seen a pass in the middle of the end zone.
We had two guys running a quick slant route (one looked open).

In order to win our DEFENSE has to come ALIVE now.

Our defense forced a punt on 4th and 10.
Texas Tech's punter is punting in his own end zone.
Gosh. He boomed it like 60 yards to our own 40.
But at least we got the ball back down 2 TDs. Still in this thing.

Touchdown Houston Cougars!!!! Easy peesy.

Down 49-42 now late in the third quarter.

If our defense makes another stop we can tie this baby.

Just FYI, in case anyone was wondering. The record for most combined points is 137
Texas Tech's QB needs like 120 more passing yards to break the Big 12 Conference record for most passing yards in a game. I hope our defense can force a couple interceptions in the fourth quarter so we can pull this win off.

Houston's defense sucks ass.

Seriously they need to stop the Ed Oliver Heisman campaign after this.
Unfortunately, I agree.

I haven't seen a Houston athlete disappear so much since James Harden's Game 6 performance against the Spurs during the 2017 NBA Playoffs.

With all our history of bad defenses over the years, this may be our worst ever.

Ole Miss beat Texas Tech 47-27 the first game.
How did Ole Miss hold Tech's offense to 27 points?
What is Ole Miss recruiting defensively that we aren't?
In fact, Ole Miss held Tech scoreless in the 4th quarter.

You mean those top 10 classes Ole Miss gets every year. I don't know what our 75th ranked classes couldn't do that those guys can either.

We'd be right there if we could land our local talent. We've got the best high school talent in the country right in our backyard. Just three years ago I thought we were a top 10 team in the country. Going 12-1 and we beat a big time program in Florida State in the Peach Bowl. And then a couple years ago we beat a #5 ranked Oklahoma team by double digits at NRG Stadium to kick off the season.

I want to see our football team take the next step and consistently compete with the big boys year in and year out. Granted, it may never happen until a Power Five Conference invites us.

But it's a shame we can't recruit a better defense especially when we landed one of the top defensive tackle recruits in the country but didn't build on it. I want top flight defensive ends, corners, linebackers and safeties also. We've got plenty of them that are juniors and seniors all around the greater Houston area high schools. But they go play for other schools and not U of H.

Recruiting is the #1 reason why we probably won't ever get an invite to a P5 league. They don't want any competition recruiting in this city.

We haven'r recruited well the past few years because of all the coaching changes. Its hard to do that when you are changing philosophies every 2-3 years. I can take coaches leaving, but it would be nice to have them for 4-5yrs before they move on to greener pastures.

To recruit the top players, you have to have a coaching staff that consistently puts players into the NFL. Ed Oliver going top 3 will help. It's a big deal for prospects to hear on the SNF intros "Ed Oliver...University of Houston."

I'm wondering if the Cougars could get Jalen Hurts to come home? I'd sure like to beat the Longhorns to his doorstep.

He is not a very good passer and thats why he got benched at Bama. The Briles system requires you to throw the ball and King is light years better than Hurts now. He also has played enough this year to not be able to redshirt so he will only have one year of eligibility wherever he goes.

Ed Oliver with a great performance today in the Cougar's blow out.
Can he still be invited to the Heisman award in New York as a finalist, or was that no-show and loss against a fast-paced Texas Tech offense that scored 63 points enough to take him out of the running completely?

Cougars putting the hurt on the chop-blocking Midshipmen.

I say run the score up on them as a message to their damn chop-blocks.

Ok Coogs, big game next week. USF is indeafeated and ranked. Need a big game here to jump into the rankings.

It is a big game and South Florida is a good team. They've beaten a couple of average Power 5 schools with a balanced, explosive offense. The over/under for points is an astounding 77, and that seems low to me. The spread is anywhere from -7 to -10 for UH, but I think this might be a one possession game with the team with the last possession winning. A win for the Coogs today puts them in the driver's seat for getting homefield for the AAC championship game.

Houston just kicked the living snot out of South Florida. D'Eriq King can score at will. This game puts them in the rankings and could vault the offense to #1 in the nation. I'd really like to see the Texans sign King as UDFA or in RD7 since his size probably keeps him out the 7 round draft. This guy is far too gifted to not get a shot.

D'Erik King has really arrived. This was his best game by far. I never thought he would become this good, but King is playing QB as well as anyone in college. 28 TD passing, 11 TDs rushing. Leads the nation in total TDs and on pace for 60+. We're talking about an Andre Ware type of season.

D'Eriq King has officially entered the Heisman Race. The Cougars and King still have; @ SMU, Temple, Tulane, and @ Memphis on the schedule......his numbers could be pretty gaudy by season's end. He still has the possibility of facing UCF and potentially their CFB best winning streak in the American Conference Championship Game and a nice Bowl Game to make a push in the Heisman race.

Heisman ballots have to be in by 12-3, so most will be in before the AAC championship game. I don’t think King will get enough votes to become a finalist, but top 10 would be nice.

This offense is so fun to watch. I told my gf when we hired Kendall that I bet we were 10 ppg better than last season and we might be pretty good if that happened. I didn't realize what kind of speed we had on the bench at WR last year. I wonder why some of these guys weren't getting touches last year.

Looking forward to taking a road trip next weekend

GO COOGS !!

This is becoming so very typical for the Cougars. They play a game every season in which they lay an egg against a team they should blowout. This was a pathetic effort by a team who celebrated making the Rankings and assuming they were playing a rollover. They will not see the rankings again this season unless they beat UCF in the Championship Game. Then it concludes with another mid-tier Bowl Game. At some point, these guys need to understand that in order to even be considered for a top Bowl game, they have to play lights out for an entire season......no ducking blips!!!!

ehh with the way college football is set up, they were never going to a top bowl game this year. The ceiling for them was always going to be the liberty bowl like its been. They make these non power 5 schools go undefeated for 2 years before they even look at them for a top bowl.

UCF got the Peach Bowl (01 Jan) and Auburn for their undefeated effort last season and delivered a 34-27 win for Power 5 Conferences to chew on. UH could've been in the same seat if they'd remained a 1 loss team and then beat an undefeated UCF in the Championship Game.

It doesn't really matter though. UH got the Peach Bowl and beat Florida St. and still never had any chance at moving up in the esteem of the people who decide who is going to be champion. UH does it to themselves most years, so it's not like there is any serious uproar, but the odd year here and there that they put it together, it would be nice to see their ultimate accomplishment decided on the field instead of in some cigar smoke filled back room. But hey, such is life.

I still maintain there was at least one year during the Keenum era when they could have played toe to toe with Alabama. Might have won, might not have, but it would have been one helluva game.

Until the Coogs can get into one of the power 5 conferences, and last I checked Pac-12 and Big 12 are the only ones with potential openings for expansion under the current set up, their ceiling will be the success they had under Herman and Sumlin. Or if there is some monumental shift in CFB alignment, and I don't see that happening.

I still think the BIG12 (errrr, BIG10) must strike a blow and become the first BIG16 Super Conference. They would need to add 6 teams to make this happen:

Houston & SMU- Both of these schools can compete on a bigger platform. I know that grandfathered schools don't like the idea of UH competing with the rich Houston recruiting base but with the addition of the other schools, there will be new recruiting territories.

UCF & USF- Both of these schools would jump at the chance to land in a Power 5 Conference. This move would also help them in recruiting top athletes against schools like Miami, Florida and Florida State. The other benefit, the Conference and their teams will gain a presence in talent rich Florida.

Arkansas & Tennessee- These teams will no longer be competitive in the SEC and being perennial losers in the SEC cannot be good. If the package was right, I could easily see these two school willing to cut bait with the SEC and come into a new Power 5 Conference that gives them a much better chance at competing.

The could start with 2 eight team divisions that could, at some point become 4 four team divisions.

Division I
Texas
TCU
Baylor
Texas Tech
Houston
SMU
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

Division II
Tennessee
Arkansas
Kansas
Kansas State
Iowa State
West Virginia
U Central Florida
U South Florida

Maybe I could flip some schools around but this would be the start.

The Big XII will never add UH and as long as TCU is in the Big XII they will kick and scream if SMU is even mentioned. If the Pac 12 doesn't come calling I think the AAC is where UH is stuck which means the ceiling is making a NY6 game.

This loss was on the coaches we just got outcoached on offense because there is no way we should have only passed 22 times in the game with the WR we have. I didn't understand the gameplan and we know the defense has struggled all year so we needed to score points and spotting them 17 to start the game on the road was not the way to do it.
