Houston Bowl will effect Texans play this weekend

Wow, totally forgot about that one.

Fully expect to see complaints again from opposing teams players.

I hate to say it, but I think you're right. I love the idea of playing on grass, but it's just not working here. I'd hate to see the players get injured Sunday because of this stuff. I know Casserly has studied the field turf issue as far back as last year when the Saints put theirs in (about 2 weeks too late for Seth Payne).
 
It's rare that I see a football game at Reliant on tv. The field looks bad in person. It looks even worse on the tube.

Even though the field does look kinda worn, I still like the idea that they are playing on real grass, that adds a little more style to the games IMO. Even though it will never rain because of the retractable roof I like to see muddy games or when people get driven into the turf and have a chunck of grass stuck on their helmet. I like that i can tell how much pressure we've got on the QB by the grass stains on his jersey. I think real grass fields are on of the last things left from the old school smashmouth glory days of the NFL.
 
Dang, I never thought about the turf. After this one, there will be yet more complaints to the media about our turf.

Our facilities are way too awesome have those kind of complaints. They've got to get this taken care of next year.

And the worst thing about it is that the media will be right. Reliant is a palace. It's the kind of football stadium that makes you suck in your breath the first time you walk into it. It's literally the perfect stadium to watch football in with not a single bad seat in the house. There's nothing wrong with Reliant except for the abysmal looking field.

FIELD TURF!, FIELD TURF!, FIELD TURF!, FIELD TURF! (come on, everybody join in and lets make enough noise to wake up the Texans and get this done)

Seriously, someone needs to start a letter writing campaign or something. They're so focused on trying to do this 100% right (which is a good thing in most ways) that they can't see the one idea that isn't working.
 
i was at work and i noticed the same thing about the field... do you think they'll re surface it or just keep it all torn up?

Field turf is fake, grass is real.

But its a life-like fake, much better than astro-turf.

The fact is, real grass does not work in Reliant Stadium.
 
Yeah, sure the field looks terrible now, but remember how good it looked for the 1st preseason game ever played there against Miami. It was too cool, especially with the painted end zones. I wish they could find a way to make the natural surface work, but clearly they have to make a improvement one way or another. Especially since Reliant Stadium is in the running for the 2009 Superbowl. The field looked horrible before the game started tonight, I can only imagine what shape it is in now. The thing that I don't get is why it always seems to be wet.
 
I was at that first game against Miami and the grass looked awesome. (It had that new car smell too.:heh: )

whooaaa, just so the highlights of the Houston Bowl on sports center. The grass didn't look too great. The middle was horrible and it kind of reminded me of a well used golf course with divets every where.

I also didn't like seeing the pick axe being driven into the ground.

Man, I went to a lot of games at the dome as a kid and I hated how fake every thing was. The grass, the Air Conditioning, soft seats, etc. It wasn't FOOTBALL. I really liked how now we have the open air and the real grass. I don't want to let that go unless there is no way to make grass work. Keep it real.

But I will admit I don't know much about Field Turf so maybe that is a better option.
 
Bah - just hook up some humongus mirrors to the top of the stadium and direct the sun into the stadium to allow the grass to grow.


... okay, maybe not.
 
I saw about a quarter of the game and the field did look chewed up.

They should ditch that bowl. The empty stadium looked far worse to me than the grass.
 
From what I understand from John McClain. The Texans players HATE the field turf and won't put it in the stadium. The Texans have the field turf in the practice bubble and the players do no like it!!
 
With the tray system that we have, don't we have trays of grass that can be brought in to repair the middle of the field before Sundays game?

Oh please, like one little pick axe mark can't be covered up. And in fact you should ditch the Houston Bowl, the lack of attendance and show of support for a local bowl was pathetic.

Really? Do you have a link to these statements? From what I've seen from players around the league, they really like field turf.
 
I asked a friend of mine that works for the Texans about this at the last game, and what they're going to do is they're going to bring in another field and like keep it outside somewhere and switch them out after every game, or if theres a part thats a problem, like the H Bowl today, they'd replace the middle of the field alone

Right, they have a tray system. But the field will get torn up again on the first kickoff. For some reason that grass will not root itself in those trays.

Is there a horticultural/grass specialist on this board?

Edwards recalled one game game last year when Santana Moss could have scored on a punt return against the Browns but "he took a 12-foot divot" on a cut.

then there's Smart Grass which I think is different than Field turf though it sounds the same.

Guess we'll find out in the coming days and year... though I think I recall that the front office was pretty committed to this tray system we currently have.

On 610 this morning they were saying that Charlie Casserly doesn't want to change from real grass...course I was reading the sports while listening so I didn't hear everything

I'm not a horticulturalist or grass specialist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
 
I just ran across some comments from Gary Barnett in the Chronicle about the field conditions at Reliant. This is coming from a college coach:

"It was really sloppy. I thought it was really tough footing. I was wondering if anyone was going to ask about that, but it was tough footing out there and I don't know why. Everybody slipped around..."

Reliant Stadium officals should be embarrassed.

I was watching Super Bowl highlights on ESPN earlier tonight and noticed how nice and tight the turf was that night. Of course we had the turf god in here for two weeks to get it right. I think our turf guys need a different ops plan.
 
If I'm not mistaken, the turf for the SB was specifically grown for that
game per the NFL--original grass for Reliant was grown in nearby Bay City
but SB turf was trucked in from somewhere else...
 
That pretty Super Bowl field at Reliant was Princess 77 grass...

That has been the crux of all the complaints by players and coaches alike. "The footing is horrible out there!" "It was wet and slippery!"

And I don't want to hear any crud about how you don't hear anyone in the Texans organization complaining about the field. We all know what would happen to them if they did.

Maybe what needs to happen is for AJ or DD to blow out a knee on that "very very wet" grass in order to be more than just an embarrassment.

Grass, wet or otherwise, is not what makes people blow knees out. Astroturf is the worst, field turf is supposed to be "better" but does that mean it is as good as grass injury wise?--never heard anyone say it is safer.

And what is with this superficial perfection thing anyway? Football used to be cool because teams would play in driving rain, snow, wind--mail men and the NFL--play through whatever. Now if a little turf gets thrown up it is an embarrassment? JMO, but football should be played on grass and if anything the Texans should be used to their home field and gain an advantage akin to the advantage the Dolts have on their track.

I've always seen bad fields in December ever since I have been watching the game. Our limited lighting makes our field age like a Northern field but if you took away the cold I bet the Northern teams would never build domes; even with bad grass like we have. I hope we stick with grass also.
