House panel passes college football playoff bill

WASHINGTON — A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine a national champion, over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress had more pressing matters on its plate.

The bill, which faces long odds of becoming law, would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless that title contest is the result of a playoff. The measure passed by voice vote in a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee, with one audible “no,” from Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga.

there's no reason why there should be a government mandated playoff. most European sports don't even have playoffs. it's a matter of doing what's best for the sport, not what's best for the country or some nonsense.

now that being said, there does need to be a way to prohibit all the money from going to big schools and leaving out mid-majors

The way things work in the EPL, every single team involved has a chance of winning. It may be a minute chance slightly better than the Raiders winning the Super Bowl next year, but there is nothing in the makeup of the league that prevents one team from winning the league.

The BCS however, prevents growth and has seen many undefeated teams with slim chances of playing in the Nat'l Championship for reasons outside the team's control.

Whats best for the sport or whats best for the USC's Bama's OkU's and Texas' of the world ?

Whats best for the sport is a playoff , whats best for those teams consistantly at the top is status quo.

That said , I Dont believe the govt should be stepping in unless they believe that some collusion is going on .... The BCS should have the common sense to fix this garbage themselves.

It doesnt prevent growth - it prevents fairness. It keeps the top teams who draw big crowds at the gate and on the TV at the top so they can continue to make money for the entire system.

I wouldnt mind getting beat by a better team - I do mind not being given the opportunity to prove who's team is better.

The first part is all undeniably true (esp. with regards to the Raiders ), but we're working with two completely different systems. The Premier League has only 20 teams, in a relatively small, confined area compared to the US and college football. Also, the players that constitute these teams are all professionals, meaning they are no longer a full time student (though we all know a large percent of college players can hardly qualify as it is). Finally, there is only 1 league that the teams play in. There aren't conferences or affiliations or what have you, they just have the one league where everyone plays everyone home and away just once.

With the sheer amount of teams, area, and other problems that go along with being a student, college football just can not switch to a system like this.

However, I do feel there should possibly be a +1 playoff system where the top 4 teams at the end of the ranking play seeded games then the winners advance to natl. champ and the losers possibly fall into another bowl and play the other losers or possibly another team, depending on if rankings change.

Boise St., Utah, TCU, and the like would be much better at recruiting if they could tell their recruits that they have a chance at winning a National Championship. A team like East Carolina can be compared to a Fresno State; let's assume they're at the same level football-wise. One can grow to be the next USC, the other can't without intervention of the BCS in a process that would take years.

College tuition will now go up even more because someone has to pay for the POSSIBILITY that their school may have to take several trips to other states and cities for their playoff road.

I believe Mac Brown's new Salary could cover all the annual football expenses for any FCS school.

Errrr - huh? An movement towards a playoff is a movement away from the $ and power of the BCS.

I doubt even they have enough $ and power to become the "NCAA BCS FBS Playoffs.'
