CB | (5'11", 188, 4.56) | CALIFORNIA
Scouts Grade: 91 Strengths: Possesses adequate height. Is quicker than fast. Very fluid and smooth in his hips. Is a naturally gifted athlete with good instincts in coverage. He shows the quick feet and change-of-direction skills to match up one-on-one in the short-to-intermediate passing game. He gets in and out of his pedal quickly. Diagnoses plays effectively and will consistently get a good jump on the ball. He shows good short-area burst when breaking on the ball in front of him. His ball skills are outstanding. He knows when to play the ball vs. when to play the receiver. He also knows when to go for the pick vs. when to knock the ball down. He gives a good effort in run support and is a solid wrap-up (sometimes drag-down) tackler in space. He also has proven ability in blocking kicks and covering kicks on special teams.
Brandon Mebane
DT | (6'0", 298, 5.11) | CALIFORNIA
Scouts Grade: 85 Strengths: Possesses adequate-to-good bulk. Fires off the ball quickly and with good leverage. Consistently gets good positioning and uses his strong hands and upper body to control offe4nsive linemen. He displays excellent awareness and finds the ball quickly. Shows good hand usage to disengage nad he makes a lot of plays in pursuit. His motor is non-stop. Displays good initial quickness and above average overall mobility for his size. Can hold his ground versus the run and also flashes the ability to penetrate and disrupt. Continues to improve his array of pass rush moves and he's relentless when turned loose on the quarterback.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal height and will have some trouble versus taller, bigger offensive linemen that are able to neutralize him by engulfing him. He is quick and agile, but lacks top-end speed. Does not show ideal athleticism and will not be as much of a playmaker in the NFL.
Desmond Bishop
ILB | (6'1", 240, 5.0) | CALIFORNIA
Scouts Grade: 80 Strengths: Possesses good overall size. Is quicker than fast. Shows good instincts and a nose for the ball. Takes solid angles in pursuit. Is big and powerful enough to take on blockers in the phone booth. Fills hard versus the inside run and shows the power to blow up iso-blockers in the hole. He is a powerful tackler with good wrap-up skills in space. He plays with a high motor and a mean streak. Always seems to be around the football and is a playmaker versus the run. Makes his presence felt over the middle of the field in coverage. Shows adequate range in middle-zone coverage and will do a good job of playing the ball in front of him.
Weaknesses: Lack of top-end speed is concerning. Seems to play faster on the field, but his timed-speed was marginal in the spring of 2006. Needs to play with more consistent leverage. Will lose his power when attempting to take blockers on too high. Needs to do a better job of protecting his legs in space. Takes some false steps versus the play-fake. Lacks ideal closing burst as a pass rusher and must how to get off of blocks once reached. Not a huge playmaker in the passing game. Lacks the fluid hips and top-end speed to turn and run versus faster running backs one-on-one in coverage. Also displays below average ball skills in coverage.
TEXAS A&M
Courtney Lewis
RB | (5'10", 196, 4.66) | TEXAS A&M
Scouts Grade: 71 Strengths: Possesses adequate vision and has enough lateral mobility to exploit cutback lanes given the opportunity, Shows good initial burst, is quick enough to turn the corner and shows a second gear in the open field. Runs hard, possesses adequate-not-great size and flashes the ability to pick up yards after contact. Runs adequate routes, doesn't drop many passes that should catch and can be productive after the catch. Has some experience returning kickoffs and is capable of making an impact on special teams in the NFL.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal lower body strength, doesn't stay low to the ground and has problems picking up the tough yards in short yardage situations. Takes too long to read blocks, is indecisive and dances in the hole at times. Doesn't explode out of cuts, lacks ideal elusiveness and isn't going to make multiple defenders miss once in the open field. Missed two games with an ankle injury in 2005 and durability is a concern.
Justin Warren
ILB | (6'2", 242, 4.9) | TEXAS A&M
Scouts Grade: 37 Strengths: A classic two-down run-stuffing middle linebacker prospect. Is tall and thickly built. He is instinctive in the running game. Reads plays quickly and does a good job with his pursuit angles. He shows the size and base to anchor at the point of attack when taking on blocks. He also is a solid wrap-up tackler in space. Displays good recognition skills and won't take a lot of false steps. Is capable of holding up in middle-zone coverage. Displays enough quickness and instincts to make plays on the ball in front of him.
Weaknesses: Lacks explosiveness. He is big and shows good lower body strength, but he lacks upper body power and lacks ferociousness as a tackler. More of a "thudder" than "striker" when it comes to his tackling. Below average speed and athletic ability. Does not show sideline-to-sideline range versus the run. Is high-cut and relatively stiff in his hips. Does not show the fluidity or speed to match up one-on-one consistently in the NFL. He has never been a huge playmaker in the passing game, either. Has some minor durability issues, including an undisclosed injury that caused him to miss one game in 2005 and slowed him in several others.
