They've gotten faster. It remains to be seen on whether or not that is better. It's hard to believe losing 2 former pro-bowlers in Glenn and Sharper would make us better. We'll see.

I think that they may have either taken a small step back, or stayed even in the short term. But, I think that the moves have set the team up for real improvement in 2006 when AG, Sharper and Foreman's contracts are off of the cap... we will have a D that has a year of experience as a unit, is young, fast and athletic.
We will also have some cap room to pursue FAs and we will have some extra picks in the draft.
In all, I think that we can threaten for the playoffs this year and make a serious run in 2006.

With the turnover on the defensive side of the ball this season have the Texans improved their personel .
First the LB's
M.Greenwood replacing J.Foreman i believe is an upgrade although im not so sure about Wong being an upgrade over Sharper and in relation to that Peek being an upgrade over Wong . This in effect is putting one player out of position and asking a volatile , mistake prone reserve to become a starter . No way i can call this an upgrade and is probably a huge loss at the position . Lets hope they prove me wrong .
In the secondary there is only one significant change with P.Buchanon replacing A.Glenn . This may be a physical / speed upgrade but when you weigh the experience / performance factors I think AG is clearly the better player . This I think is a downgrade
The D-line is one place i think an upgrade was accomplished with the first round pick (Travis Johnson ) almost sure to be an upgrade from the pathetic G-Funk , other than that its status quo .
On the Offensive side of the ball there arent that many changes to speak of ...

The aquisition of Vernand Morency has to be an upgrade over the oft injuried Hollings and the slow to hit the hole J.Wells who makes the team based on his special teams play . So we have a plus here in terms of depth but no one should expect Morency to be the starter .
The O-line see's NO Change as far as the starters are concerned although 5th round pick Drew Hodgdon has some potential in a couple seasons . I expect DC to run for his life again mainly because of the poor play @ the center position ..

secondary - DRob 2nd year - plus, PB from Glenn - don't know enough about PB but age, cost comparison, better system - I'll say a plus.
Dline - agree with ya TJ over Walker, unless Walker some how turns back on his pilot light - then we have some depth. Plus
QB - 4th year, just get away from the happy feet and constant dump offs.. which depends on....
Oline - stays the same for the 1st time, so we'll see if that excuse goes out the window this year. Push

I think this a different defensive team and an offensive team that will have more experience, but right now I think this still that joined the mediocore of the NFL 6-10 to 10-6 last year and has done nothing to go either way...so it option 3 for me.

I think the overall team has improved. We didnt lose Foreman and Sharper and replace them with rookies. Vets are still in place at ILB. We added depth at RB/WR, and maybe get a replacement for Walker with Johnson. McKinney could be beat in training camp, and if he doesnt, more depth. We added depth at safety, and traded out our older CB, for a younger CB, who can return kicks. We really didnt lose any players via FA either. We kept who we wanted, and released who we did not.

IMO Walker will remain the starter but Johnson will come in on rotation and some passing downs. Hodgson looks like a lunch pail workout guy who will really benefit from a full year in the Texans' conditioning program and learning the Texans' system and calls. Maybe an outside chance for him to pressure McKinney, but I doubt it this year.
Truthfully, I think the only part of our team that has gotten better this offseason is special teams... With Buchannon and Mathis returning punts/kicks our STs look promising. Our offense has a CHANCE to get better this year as our OL has had time to "gel" together. That doesnt mean that they will be better though. They might be better, they might suck as usual, we will just have to wait and see. Im hoping better! Our def is younger/faster, but that doesnt mean they will be better. Thats like saying that we should sign Randy Moss and put him at ILB and he will be a probowler cause he is fast... Some of you people make no sense at all. I think our def will either be good this year, or it will be 32nd. If its good, we may be a playoff team, if its 32nd, at least we will have a top 5 draft pick next year!

2004 Defense vs. 2005 Defense
LDE R. Smith - no changes
NT S. Payne - coming off injuries both years so unsure if he will be better or worse
RDE G. Walker - came off injuries in 2004 and had subpar year. Was the subpar year due to age, health or both?
D-line Depth - TJ is an improvement over the guys they had
LOLB - Babin - should be better 2nd year than 1st
LILB - Foreman replaced by Wong - Foreman was the weakest part of our defense. Wong is a big improvement over him.
RILB - Sharper was our most consistent LB and provided stability. He lacked playmaking ability however. Greenwood has more speed, but he doesn't have a history of making plays in Miami. The verdict is still out whether this is better, worse or a draw.
ROLB - Wong replaced by Peek - Peek has raw talent and pure speed. He is also solid in coverage. He might be a liability against the run. Peek should provide more big plays than Wong, but he also might give up more big plays. He does provide the one thing this team has been sorely lacking, a pass-rusher.
CB - Dunte Robinson - should be improved from his rookie year.
CB - Aaron Glenn replaced by Phillip Buchanon - Glenn was fantastic in 2002, but hasn't been the same since. He got toasted a few times in the second half of the season when teams started to throw away from Robinson. Buchanon was having at least as many problems last year in Oakland. He has a tendency to go for the big play and it has hurt him. I think we might move backwards in this position in 2005, but I think Buchanon in 2006 will be better than Glenn would have been (at 34). A move needed to be made, I just am not sure Buchanon is the permanent answer here. Hopefully it was the chaos in Oakland that contributed to his poor play. He has the physical tools, for that I have no doubt. Hoke has his work cut out for him though.
SS - Eric Brown replaced by Glenn Earl - Earl came in and took over the job at the end of last year. He is more suited to stopping the run than coverage, as was the case with Brown, but Earl appears to be better at both (coverage and stuffing the run). I think he was a real steal in the 4th round last year. I think this is a significant upgrade.
FS - Coleman will man centerfield for the second year. He should only get better. He is getting up in age, but you don't need the speed as much in this position as CB. (Note: I'd like to see if Lord if getting used to playing FS this season. He might be Coleman's heir apparent if he is progressing.)
NB - While Faggins actually plays CB when we go to the nickel, he is considered our nickel back since he comes in for that package. He should be at least as good as last year. He has been one of CC's better surprises in the draft.

I just heard a rumor that the Texans just got Zeke Moreno ILB from San Diego, has anyone heard of this?

I am not maintaining that individual players will make the pro bowl or anything because of their speed, but I do still say that the improvement in team speed will cause an overall improvement to the defense.
Caper's defenses are known for their aggressiveness and blitzing, but that hasn't been the case here in houston.
I still fully believe that with better pass coverage from the LBs and better team speed, Capers will feel a little more comfortable cutting loose the dogs.
I'm sure he's been frustrated that he hasn't been able to be more aggressive with his calls, but he knew that he just didn't have the personnel for it. The current personnel may not be exactly what he would like to have, but I still think we will see a much more aggressive D this season. Much more aggressive...!

to me there is no doubt they have improved, now besides payne, walker and coleman our defense is pretty young. it is better for now and the future.
