Halfway There Mock Draft (1st Round)

It's bye week time at the mid-season point so thought I would do a mock to see where things might stand next year in the draft. Texans are currently slotted at #10. #10 is a tough spot because it is typically just out of range of the top QB's available. I am not picking based on my rankings or what I would do. This is my guess at what each team might do.

1) Detroit - Laremy Tunsil (OT, Ole Miss)
2) Tennessee - Ronnie Stanley (OT, Notre Dame)
3) Baltimore - Joey Bosa (DE, Ohio State)
4) Cleveland - Connor Cook (QB, Michigan State)
5) San Diego - Jalen Ramsey (S, Florida State)
6) San Francisco - Jared Goff (QB, California)
7) Jacksonville - Vernon Hargreaves (CB, Florida)
8) Chicago - Robert Nkemdiche (DT, Ole Miss)
9) Dallas - Laquon Treadwell (WR, Ole Miss)
10) Houston - Paxton Lynch (QB, Memphis)
11) Kansas City - Jaylon Smith (LB, Notre Dame)
12) Miami - Myles Jack (LB, UCLA)
13) Buffalo - Emmanuel Ogbah (DE, Oklahoma State)
14) Tampa Bay - Taylor Decker (OT, Ohio State)
15) Philadelphia - Vadal Alexander (OG, LSU)
16) Washington - Darron Lee (LB, Ohio State)
17) New Orleans - Tre'Davious White (CB, LSU)
18) Seattle - Jack Conklin (OT, Michigan State)
19) Pittsburgh - Mackensie Alexander (CB, Clemson)
20) St. Louis - Tyler Boyd (WR, Pittsburgh)
21) Indianapolis - Germain Ifedi (OT, Texas A&M)
22) NY Giants - Shaq Lawson (DE, Clemson)
23) NY Jets - Leonard Floyd (OLB, Georgia)
24) Minnesota - Josh Doctson (WR, TCU)
25) Oakland - Adolphus Washington (DT, Ohio State)
26) Arizona - A'Shwan Robinson (DT, Alabama)
27) Atlanta - Desmond King (CB, Iowa)
28) Cincinnati - Shilique Calhoun (DE, Michigan State)
29) Green Bay - DeForest Buckner (DE, Oregon)
30) Denver - Pat Elfein (OG, Ohio State)
31) Carolina - Ezekiel Elliot (RB, Ohio State)
32) New England - Forfeit

Wouldn't be heartbroken with Lynch. But I would strongly consider Jaylon or Jack with Cook/Goff off the board and hope to snag either Lynch/Wentz early in round two. Maybe even Elliot.

It's still early, but man this draft looks kinda bleh.

If I were picking it would be hard to get me to pass on Smith. He's the best LB to come out in years, IMO. As far as non-pass rushing LB's go, I think Kuechly is the only guy on his level since Patrick Willis came out. Those 3 guys are the best three-down ILB's I've seen come out in the last decade.

Agree that the draft is somewhat bland. It's very top heavy on defensive players but the depth of past years is not there. I think we will see a new record number of underclassmen declare because the senior talent pool this year just isn't that great.

Not sure how I feel about that because I think that guy's a moron.
No intent on my part, I just noticed that your mocks were similar, that's all.

At this point I'll say Carson Wentz will be the first QB off the board. Now I expect some criticism, mocking and people making fun on that prediction. Two years ago I made similar comments about Blake Bortles and the ridicule is still ongoing to today. Bortles however, was the first QB off the board.

If the draft fell like your predicting, I'd have no problem at all with Paxton Lynch. I'll admit that I haven't seen alot of film on Lynch but from what I have seen, I'm impressed.

Unfortunately I have not gotten to see much of Wentz at all and it seems I am unlikely to get the opportunity with his wrist injury. I would assume he gets a Senior Bowl invite and I hope he takes it. He has a real chance to make up ground despite the injury because none of the QB's are really setting themselves apart while he's been out.

Also keep an eye out on Jacoby Brissett from NC State. He's starting to get a ton of hype behind the scenes right now.

I think there are about 7 elite (Tunsil, Bosa, Ramsey) or near elite (Treadwell, Stanley, Nkemdiche, Smith) non-QBs that could potentially be in this class. That helps push a QB down to us. But odds are at #10 we're getting third choice. Hopefully our top option is that third guy but who knows?

Personally, Cook isn't my top option. Say it plays out this way. I'm thrilled Cook goes first. But as soon as that happens I'm trading whatever I have to for the #5 pick so I can take Goff. Tired of waiting for someone to fall into our lap. Go get him.

My early prognostication is if Detroit believes that Stafford is their guy this could be a year the first pick gets traded or more than 1 Top 10 pick gets traded. Detroit firing their CEO and GM today now makes for more early supposition.

I think they draft a QB with their early #1. Stafford has a cap hit of $22.5m next season but to cut him costs them less than half at $11m and he has done nothing to give a new regime the confidence to keep him.

There are several other teams - SF , Cleveland & Chicago I could see taking a QB. I'd be surprised if SF & Cleveland didn't.

It's quite possible 3 of the first 6 picks are QB's ..... if they want one , they may have to make a move up ahead of at least two of SF , Cleveland , Detroit & Chicago.

If we picked at #10 I think top 3 (Cook, Lynch, Wentz) will be gone, and if Goff comes out he may be gone too. There's too many teams out there that still need a QB and some may be willing to jump over the Texans at #10. Cleveland and S.F. for sure will be looking at QB's and possibly the Lions, but what about K.C., Buffalo, Washington, the Jets, and even Denver! Are they all happy with their QB situations? Like it was said before, it's early. So, a lot can happen between now and the draft. Who knows, with the way the Texans season has been going they may end up with a top 5 pick. Then it'll be up to BOB and RS not to blow it!

I don't believe that for a minute. If we picked at 32, then that might be true, but I just don't see more than Goff, Lynch and Cook going in the first round. I think Wentz falls to the third round at best unless someone does a major reach and might fall to the sixth. But with Cleveland around, who knows?

Wentz, with his throwing wrist injury, may fall to the 3rd or lower, and that will make the pool of talent at the top even smaller, especially if Goff doesn't come out. So, some teams in need of a QB are more likely to try and move up to get a QB. Not saying this will happen because no one knows what will play out with the remaining games. The Texans may completely tank and pick in the top 5 or, they may surprise and win the division! :)

By the way, I like that quote from John!

I think the truth is somewhere in between those two .... with the Texans picking just outside where the top QB talent is available .... again.
