That's what I've heard as well. Keep in mind he was projected as a CB in college until his senior year and was "supposedly" recruited as a CB by LSU but went to USC to play RB.

I think Powell will be taking over for Green soon and they need another guy for depth with McKnight moving over. That would be Grimes.

Don't really understand why they can't get a guy off the street though. Rex probably thinks he can turn him into Sam Shields 2.0

Not hammering you on this one, but would just like to say that Meggett is such a steep drop off from Grimes. In fact, Grimes--in my opinion and in Rey's too--was maybe even better (overall, measured many ways) than Forsett. Maybe the veteran aspect & the blocking aspect Forsett is better at...but running the ball? Grimes was on a different level than Forsett IMO.

It's suckening (new word I just invented) that Grimes got away from us.

With how Shonn Greene has been playing, I wouldn't be that surprised. If Grimes picks up the playbook and can block worth a damn, I'd drop Greene to the 3rd back and go with Powell as the #1 and Grimes as the #2. If something happens to Powell, then it's Grimes' time to shine.

In my opinion, Grimes would put up Tate numbers if he was RB2 on our squad.

No worries GP. I just happen to disagree with you (and, undoubtedly, countless others).

I will admit to under-rating Grimes out of college. He did prove that he has a lot of talent, and that he belongs on the team. And I, like you (and Rey, and countless others) thought he would make the 53. I too liked Grimes better than Forsett.

However, I dont think that Meggett is much worse than Grimes. He is a natural runner, has good lower body strength, and is a willing blocker. Like I said, I think he makes the roster next year, if not at the end of this year if someone gets injured (knock on wood that it does not happen).

I'm with rmartin on this one.
Pre-training camp, I liked Meggett a little better than Grimes.

I thought Grimes ran "a little upright" in college (not that the style can't be successful in the NFL - see Eric Dickerson - whom I saw play at SMU; he was a couple years younger than me.)

There wasn't much tapes of Grimes to evaluate his blockings.

I liked what I saw of Meggett in college, including his blocking skills.

Grimes showed very well in PS though, better than Meggett, but neither was used much in blocking so we can't tell hardly anything about that part.

He didn't run upright during PS as I thought he would.
Perhaps he took in Dickerson's advice by heart "I run upright when I see daylight" (but not in traffic).

I like Grimes and want him on our team but... Mister Alexander?

That probably means some combination of:
1) Mister wasn't playing well on ST.
2) Sharpton is closer than we've been told.
3) We've got some other solution at ILB (like Reed).

I'm sorry to see Mister Alexander go.

I am very cool with this. I hated to see Grimes signed to the Jets from the Texans practice squad! Welcome back!!!
 
Yeah I was in favor of him over Forsett in the PS. I thought he moved like a smaller, lighter Foster through traffic. He also made a few plays on teams, which Alexander did not. I think this is the guy we lost to keep Holliday, what a mistake that was! Glad to have him back and I think we'll probably see him carry once or twice too!
 
Maybe they put Mister back on the PS. Don't know if he has any PS time left or if they even have a spot for him.
 
Grimes was pretty nice in the preseason, and if this means we get to see Reed play some more ILB then I'm all for it.

The latter literally makes me giddy as the prospect. :doot: Especially if it means Mercilus sees more snaps.

I just wish Grimes was a little bigger & could also fill FB position, would make him a little safer.

Texan fans are going to be impressed with Forsett when he gets his reps especially catching out of the backfield.

In defense of ILB Mister Alexander, I don't think ILB was his natural position. I'm not sure why he wasn't trying to fit here @ OLB & kick Nading inside from the beginning. He just doesn't have core strength you look for inside but outside he has a nice combination of speed, length & looks rangy. His long history of injury's (knee) may have robbed him of some of that natural explosiveness/speed needed off the edge?

This comes full circle with Ben Tate, who has been injury prone since drafted by the Texans. He needs to find a way to stay healthy period or his future here will be short & sweet.
 
My thing with Tate is that he's good until he fumbles. Then he's a totally different RB for weeks. This on top of the injuries.
 
Funny how Kubiak mouths off AFTER he was able to sign Grimes back.

Until he had that leverage, he wasn't going to say anything about Ben Tate's supposed "problem staying on the field" issue. Now that he has Foster, Forsett and Grimes...he's using that against Ben to make sure Ben doesn't sandbag it or something.

I remember Tate had to have a sit down with Kubiak a year or so ago when Tate was on/off the field a bit in preseason...and Tate, IIRC, freely made it known that he had gone to Kubiak and told coach that he (Tate) was dedicated to making sure he was on the field and not in the tub.

So there's something that is going on, obviously, that is not quite sitting right with Gary Kubiak. I just don't know that he needs to be THAT obvious about it. He was not just blunt, he was outright questioning Tate with those comments. IMO. Ouch. That's not what this locker room needs, or maybe it does? I dunno.

We may be ending up trading Tate after this season. Or, Kubiak is just trying to motivate Tate? Sometimes he does things like this as Kubiak expects good effort from a certain player.

You are right Doc. The Texans need his performance along with Foster as we are looking at post season and do not want to over use Foster. With Tate, our running game won't miss much beat. So naturally Kubiak wants Tate's max effort from him. If not, like I said earlier in my post that we may have to trade him while he still has some value. Hopefully, Tate able to come back from injury and learn how to play through injury if that injury is playable one.

Go Texans!!!
 
This is very good news indeed. Also think the successful return of Braman from injury has led to Alexander being gone, he's an outside guy who's already good enough to be worked into the rotation on the outside, freeing them up to use Nading inside a little more, and possibly work on sets where Reed plays inside too.

I don't really see it as saying anything about Sharpton though, I think the signing of Ruud probably says more against Sharpton returning than getting rid of Mister Alexander says for that happening. I think they'll probably add him to the roster and see if he can get practicing in time to play late season and become an option in the playoffs.

I wonder who'll go to make that happen? Think a young CB may be in the firing line as the numbers game doesn't add up and no-one seems to be making any impresson even in late game second string reps or even on special teams.

GP this ain't a new thing.

I remember him cutting Darius Walker when Walker seemed (to Kubiak anyway) that he thought he should have been drafted higher because he was high on the Notre Dame RB ydg list. Walker even admitted -after he was recalled to the team - that was a wake-up call.

Kubiak did the same thing with Ron Dayne; essentially telling him Houston was his last chance and he had better learn to play hurt. The next game Dayne carried us to our first win against the Manning Colts. Of course Dayne couldn't sustain it but he was noticably better the rest of that season.

Then, in I think the last preseason game of '09, he basically told Jerrimiah Johnson and Arian Foster they were fighting for the last RB spot behind Slaton and whatshisname. Johnson showed nothing and was cut. Foster showed a little but was last on the depth chart. It took him most of the next season to show he belonged. The "light" came on in Foster and the rest is history.

Point is, this is Kubiak's M.O. He will not tolerate any form of slacking and lets them know it. So, again, this ain't a new thing. You will conduct yourself the McBob way and perform the Wade-iak way which means playing thru little "nicks" and stuff - or you will hit the street.

He didn't do or say anything significantly cutting/harsh toward any of those players in the seasons they played.

This is the first time Kubiak has openly criticized a running back in the media, in the middle of a regular season, and basically hinting that the guy isn't as banged up as the player is claiming. Claiming he's not nicked up enough to be out of practice.

They're no other reason he'd say THOSE comments in regards to an injury. He's never, in my memory, questioned any other player's toughness that way before.
