Greatest Draft Ever?

It's premature, but what else is a fan supposed to do in the offseason but make wild and overexuberant statements:

The 2003 HOuston Texan draft could go down as one of the best ever:

Andre Johnson
Bennie Joppru
Seth Wand
Antwaan Peek
Dave Ragone
Dominick Davis
Shantee Orr
Drew Henson
C.Anderson?

The rest of the NFL should be thankful that Joppru has been plagued by injuries. At minimum, this draft produced 4 solid starters an extra 3rd round pick and a couple very nice role players...

According to a somewhat biased and encouraged Texan fan, it produced a future hall of famer, one of the better RBs in the league, a Charles Haley clone, a very good LT, and a future probowl QB (for some team). Not to mention whatever becomes of Drew Henson, Charlie Anderson, and Bennie Joppru.

Of course, this is the year that this draft will really show its colors. Peek and Wand will either become the players I think they can be or they'll be afterthoughts who could be leaving the team after the season.\


by the way, the 2004 draft looks pretty darn good thru the first three picks:

I will agree with the exception of Wand. Unlike my compatriots I do not believe he has what it takes to start at LOT.

Anderson was a 6th rounder from 2004. As far as the other choices from '03:

6th round Keith Wright DT (Played some for the Colts, I think)
7th round Curry Burns FS (Bounced around the Texans & Raiders practice squad, started for the Giants some last year)
7th round Chance Pearce (Aggie long snapper didn't make the final roster)

Best ever? I don't think so. Take a look at the Steelers draft of '74 that produced 4 HOFers. Or the Niners '86 draft that came up with 8 Super Bowl starters without the benefit of a 1st round pick. Those were great drafts. And I could go on.

Considering the talent available in '03, I think the Texans had a good draft. If guys like Wand & Peek step up and prove to be quality NFL players, the draft could be considered very good. Not perfect. And while pointing out the selection of Drew Henson being turned into a 3rd round pick (which became Vernand Morency), you might also include the Texans trade of a 5th round pick (for an '04 fourth) to the Colts who selected pass rush specialist Robert Mathis. Not so crazy about that deal.

One way to see just how good a draft was is by doing a re-draft and guessing who would go where if the draft was held today. My guess is that AJ would go #2 to Detroit, DD would go mid-late 1st (maybe the Broncos at #20). But I can't see guys like Peek, Wand, or Ragone going significantly higher than they went in '03. They say it takes 3 years in order to judge a draft, so I say wait until after the '05 season until making a conclusive judgement on just how good a draft this was for the Texans. But I don't think it will ever be described as great.
 
we are an expansion team most the players we drafted in our first 2 years will get alot of playing time because there was no competition lets see how they are doing 3 years from now.

Calling that draft one of the best ever is a major, major reach. First off, Orr was not a part of that draft. Also, I would quibble with your desciptions. With the exception of AJ, there are no great players from that draft. A Charles Haley clone? A very good LT? A future probowl QB? Joppru hasn't played a down in 3 years. Whatever you're smoking, I suggest you give it up. Neither Peek, Wand, or Ragone has proven a thing in this league. DD is an average RB who is best suited as a 3rd down back, but can be a starter. But, he is not an elite back, and time will bear that out. It was a good draft, I won't argue that point, but one of the best ever? There are better drafts than that every year in the NFL. Calling that one of the best ever is like calling a Yugo one of the best built cars ever made. Saying it doesn't make it so.
 
Man, you really take yourselves seriously. My point is that it looks like a very good draft. From the perspective of a fan, I'm hopeful it turns out to be much more than that. Peek and Ragone are both unproven players that could be very good. I've always thought a lot of Wand and still do. Dominick Davis is not an average NFL back. That's ridiculous. Once you name 10 NFL runningbacks, it becomes difficult to rank any others ahead of him. He's a heck of a lot more than a 3rd down back.

Time will tell on DD. I like him, but I am just being objective. I think he is an average starter, and is better suited to play a 3rd down role. But, that's just me. Every fan of every NFL team can do the same thing you are. If so and so can take the next step, if Mr. X gets more playing time, and yada, yada, yada. If this was simply an exercise in homerism, I probably would have just read it and not posted, but I thought you were trying to do a real objective analyis of that draft. It was under that impression that I made my comments.
 
How about just and an 'our' to the title...that'll work although it wouldn’t be fair to the last two draft classes.
 
poor dalemurphy...........when I read your thread, I realized why you never beleive any realistic judgement about any of our players............seems like your stuck in Texans-land and there is never a cloud in the sky.

But, I'm with you on the Davis thing, I like him.....he is better than a 3rd down back.
