[GLAZER]Percy Harvin traded to Jets

Bad Hombre
Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
BREAKING: The JETS have just agreed with Seattle to a trade sending WR Percy Harvin to NY for conditional pick. FOX SPORTS has learned.

@RapSheet
The #Jets have traded for #Seahawks WR Percy Harvin, source confirms (as @JayGlazer reported). Compensation is conditional mid-rounder

So I guess that's one of the worst turnarounds on a 1st round pick trade in awhile.

Very surprising - Carroll has made some smart personnel decisions (hey, he just won the SB), but he sure screwed up big-time on this guy.

oh...wow...

Wonder what he went for...I'd have liked to get in on that....
With O'Brien's love affair with the bubble screen, a Percy Harvin type would be perfect for the Texans.

Just not the real Percy Harvin.

The problem with Harvin is that he has explosive athletic ability but he's a tweener. He's not a natural receiver. He drops too many balls and he doesn't run good routes. He's a great change of pace in the run game but he's not a natural back and he can only run outside.

He's a complimentary player. He's a guy that can't get himself the ball. You have to design specific plays to get him involved. And while those plays might work, it limits what you can do with the rest of your offense when he is on the field. He's a gadget player/decoy.

New York won't know how to use him, just like Seattle didn't.

oh...wow...

The NFLN guys are saying he's a "disruption" in the locker room.
Doesn't sound like one of O'Brien's "good team guys" to me.

And now the Jets are on the hook for his $10 mil cap hit (or what's left of it)

Wow - shocked at that trade.

SHOCKED.

Even on a good team like Seattle, the guy is golden. Great pickup for the Jets.

He's been a reported locker room cancer in Seattle since he got there. He got into a fist fight with Golden Tate last year and there are rumors that he had a scuffle with Wilson recently as well. That's obviously not confirmed, but where there's smoke.....

Word is he requested out. Gonna guess he and Carroll were not pals. But at least he coasted on their work for his ring, which he basically didn't do squat for.

Sources say it was a photo album of feet.

Yeah, I'm sure that you foolishly would. That would be just wonderful to get a diva KR that hasn't been able to transition into a full time route running WR in the NFL that can't stay healthy and is now on his 3rd team. You'd be really smart.

Have you followed the NFL in the last 5 years or have you been under a rock? It is one of the typical dumb ass moves by the Jets that they've done for years now. They just went out and got a way over paid KR that can't run routes consistently and is one of the dumbest players to have entered the league in the last ten years. Yeah, they got a great pick up alright. Patriot fans are probably chuckling away right now.

There are only like two teams in the league that could use this guy. It always amazes me at how narrow minded fans can be when they watch the NFL for years and still get all hyped up for these types of players like Harvin, Vick, Clowney, Austin, Bush, and so many others that have the flash speed and freakish plays that are undersized but have poor attitudes, poor work ethics, and excuses all of the time. Harvin has been trash since he came into the league. I never understood why he was highly touted coming into the league any way, when he was a tweener RB/WR at Florida that was undersized to play RB full time, and was horrible route runner. He is just an athlete with **** for brains that has excuses coming out of every inch of his body. Hell, he smoked weed right before the combine knowing he was going to get tested. That right there showed where his mental capacity was. Sure he is great in the open field because he is a great athlete, but he has never been a consistent professional, and clearly never will. You pay guys like him all of that money early on, they aren't motivated to ever become what they could be.

Texans are talent deficient at skill positions. I like Thomas but harvin is 10x the player he is.

Not saying we were dumb to not do it, but harvin would have been an upgrade on this team. He isn't a terrible player, but not worth top dollar either.

Disagree with both those assertions. How much of an upgrade was he for Seattle? Hard to upgrade from the trainer's table.

Seahawks didn't need him. They thought they did when they traded a first for him.

But I'm not sure what that has to do with the Texans. As a third receiver and kick returner and occasional rb we don't have a guy who is close to harvin that can do those things.

I disagree that from a talent aspect harvin wouldn't bolster this team. I think that is just wrong.

As I said, he can't upgrade if he can't get on the field.

And the Seahawks did need him but we're good enough to get by without him.

And the Seahawks did need him but we're good enough to get by without him.

Then they didn't need him.

his health is part of the risk factor which would go into any decision to acquire him. I did not say the Texans did the wrong thing by not getting him. I said I'd have liked to get in on that. And for all we know, maybe they did extend feelers but decided it wasn't worth it.

Then they didn't need him.

Well I guess they and I differ on need with you then. Going into that offseason WR was noted all over as one of their top needs and obviously the price they paid indicates their evaluation.

As between the Seahawks then and Texans now I think our need for him is much smaller.

But anyway. ..

I think Seattle did good getting at minimum at 4th, possibly a 2nd. Harvin is going to look great in green when he's sitting on the trainers table injured...as usual.

Hence the reason why I said "thought they needed him"....???

But ultimately the didn't.

I don't even know what you're arguing with that.

Seahawks trade Percy Harvin to Jets as issues emerge

The Seahawks, according to sources, had decided Percy Harvin “just wasn’t a fit” with the rest of the team and the trade had as much to do with what was happening in the locker room as it did Harvin’s production on the field.

By Bob Condotta and Jayson Jenks
Seattle Times staff reporters
October 18, 2014 2:00 AM

RENTON – In a move that shocked the NFL, the Seahawks on Friday traded receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets for a conditional 2015 draft pick.

One source confirmed to The Seattle Times that the deal, first reported by Fox Sports, has been agreed upon. However, an official announcement is not expected until Saturday when all paperwork is complete. Also, the trade does not become official until Harvin passes a physical.

One source told The Times the Seahawks had decided Harvin, 26, “just wasn’t a fit” with the rest of the team and the trade had as much to do with what was happening in the locker room as it did Harvin’s production on the field. The team, a source said, was “just ready to move on” from Harvin despite his obvious on-field gifts.

Sources also said a few incidents in recent months helped set the stage for Friday’s stunning trade.

One source confirmed a report that Harvin had gotten into an altercation with former Seahawk Golden Tate before the Super Bowl that resulted in Tate getting a black eye.

A source also said Harvin had an altercation with Seattle receiver Doug Baldwin in the week leading up to the final exhibition game this August at Oakland that resulted in Baldwin getting a cut on his chin and each player being excused from practices that week. Harvin, who did not practice for two days before that game, did not make the trip to Oakland for what the team said at the time was “a personal matter.”

One final straw, a league source said, came in Sunday’s 30-23 loss to Dallas when Harvin apparently balked at going back into the game in the fourth quarter. Harvin played 26 of 48 official snaps but did not play 11 of the final 17. He finished with six touches for minus-1 yard.

“He’s just a time bomb,” one NFL source said, describing him as “too moody” and noting that Minnesota had also grown tired of dealing with Harvin, which precipitated his trade to Seattle in March 2013.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Explains the "fire sale."

As a side, some of you may remember that at the time he suffered his initial hip injury and underwent surgery, I stated that upon return from his specific injury, he would likely never regain anywhere close to his pre-injury performance potential. I also was adamant that they were forcing an unrealistic miraculously quick post operative recovery and return to play........and the first game back, he suffered a severe re-injury to his hip which essentially knocked out the remainder of his 2013 season.

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
The #Seahawks received a conditional 6th round pick in 2015 that can become a 4th rounder in exchange for new #Jets WR Percy Harvin.

Harvin has been and is a class A jerk. Fights with Tate and Baldwin are one thing, but he went after Russell Wilson too. Then refused to play.

This is why you don't put these cancers on your roster. And Idzik acquiring him should be the final nail in his coffin. Just dumb.

How long his contract is and how much $$$$ he's owed would factor into the deal. A 6th that can turn into a 4th for a player like Harvin on a short term deal seems like a good deal for the Jets.

The Texans need to add team speed and Harvin would add that as well as being a major upgrade on ST's. All of this is provided he's healthy. This deal would never happen with the Texans but I like how Seattle took a chance on Harvin then moved on.

Harvin is signed through 2018 with essentially a $10 mil per year cap hit.

With no money guaranteed.

Well that's certainly some insurance against attitude and injury but $10 mil per year is huge for a trick player.

I mean seriously, folks around here, including the steelb who somehow thinks this is a good deal when the Texans aren't doing it, want to cut Foster who doesn't make that much, along with Myers, KJ and JJo (who makes fractionally more).

Not saying you're in that camp.

I'm not in that camp. I probably would have been in favor of getting Harvin when the Vikings traded him, but even then, not at the cost of having to give him a new contract as part of the deal.

But, given the stories that circulated after the Vikings trade, and the things we're hearing now about the Seahawks situation, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Maybe he'd come in here and punch FitzBeard... would make him a hero to most of TTalk. :fingergun:

Chip Kelly is a pretty smart fella. He excised his cancerous WR -- DeSean Jackson, 1,332 yards, 9 TDs in 2013 -- by just dropping his azz off at the bus stop. The Eagles are 5-1.

I thought Jackson was being a model citizen in Washington.

Lance Zierlein @LanceZierlein
Several teams had Harvin off draft board when he came out due to character issues & who he ran with. Go ask former NFL execs on twitter

On this Percy Harvin story, if you don’t know about his background from HS or college, then you should check up on it.

Probably most telling text I received regarding Harvin trade:, "Time bomb. If Pete gets rid of a guy, your radar better be on high alert"

Check out how G.Tate is separated from WRs on diff row WITH black eye. RT @Minnott: @LanceZierlein He's not wrong: http://bit.ly/1nsZ3yV

Also got this text minutes ago: “Seattle just suckered the Jets. That GM is clueless”. Yikes.

Here are two tweets I just got from NFL personnel guys: “Literally heard minutes ago what you tweeted. Crazy. Jets didn’t do their homework"

I was told “Go find a team picture from Super Bowl and you can still see part of the black eye Tate got from Harvin"

I was told “Harvin’s anger issues are just too much to deal with and he could single handedly bring down team chemistry”. Wow. Unreal.

History of confrontations w/ teammates contd in SEA according to my guy including punching G Tate during SB week & near fight w/ QB Russell Wilson in ‘14

Heard “anger management” had quite a bit to do w/ Harvin’s departure in Seattle. (1/2)

Wrong

I would never do that deal. Even non garunteed 10 mil a yr is too rich for my blood.

Percy Harvin's long list of troubles, from high school to Seattle
By Rich Cimini

Percy Harvin is a talented-but-troubled player with a history of anger management issues. He also has been described as a malcontent who will get in the face of quarterbacks and coaches if things don't go his way. Two organizations, the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings, already have given up on him.

At 1-6, the New York Jets were desperate for a playmaker, so they decided to trade for the high-priced wide receiver. It was a stunning move, with some at One Jets Drive expressing concern that Harvin won't respond well in a losing environment. Others see it as a worthwhile, low-cost acquisition that could spark the offense.

A look at Harvin's history of transgressions:

Harvin might have sealed his fate with the Seahawks in last week's loss to the Dallas Cowboys, refusing to play late in the game, the Seattle Times reported. He played 26 of 48 snaps on offense but didn't play 11 of the final 17. He touched the ball six times for minus-1 yard.

Curiously, this story didn't break until Friday, but several media outlets reported that Harvin had an altercation with fellow receiver Golden Tate leading up to the Super Bowl last February. Tate ended up with a black eye.

In the preseason, Harvin and teammate Doug Baldwin were involved in a scuffle that resulted in a gash on Baldwin's chin, the Times reported. Both players were excused from practice that week.

Harvin's time in Minnesota, 2009 to 2012, was filled with a number of incidents. One played out on national television, with Harvin screaming at then-coach Leslie Frazier on the sideline during a game in Seattle in 2012. Weeks later, Harvin reportedly got into another argument with Frazier that was witnessed by some players and staff members.

Harvin also had disputes with Frazier's predecessor, Brad Childress. One such altercation occurred in 2010, when Childress questioned Harvin's effort in practice. Harvin, limping with an apparent ankle injury, took exception, and the two had to be separated by players and coaches, according to reports. Another time, they got into a shouting match in the weight room, which included Harvin throwing a weight at Childress. It put a hole in the wall.

In 2009, Harvin reportedly tested positive for marijuana at the NFL scouting combine. That didn't stop the Jets from showing interest. In fact, they flew to Florida the week of the draft to spend private time with Harvin. After trading up for quarterback Mark Sanchez, they tried to trade back into the first round for Harvin, but then-general manager Mike Tannenbaum deemed the price too steep.

Harvin also had problems in college at Florida. He tested positive for marijuana, refused to run the stadium steps with other teammates during a conditioning session, and attacked wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales, according to The Sporting News. Harvin threw Gonzales to the ground by his neck, according to the report.

Harvin is regarded as one of the greatest high school athletes from the Virginia Beach, Virginia, area, but Harvin encountered trouble in his early years. He was suspended twice, once for unsportsmanlike contact and another time for contacting an official and using inappropriate language. In the spring of his senior year, when he ran track, he was banished by the local high school sports association, reportedly stemming from a fight during a basketball game.

Seahawks learned of Harvin trade before boarding team bus. I'm told Marshawn Lynch, who is close to Harvin, went off and almost didn't get on bus. #nyj

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Seattle proposed sending WR Percy Harvin to Denver, sources say, in exchange for Pro Bowl TE Julius Thomas. The Broncos never pondered it.

Percy Harvin is one of those professional athletes that would be running the streets if it wasn't for sports giving him millions. Dude has some serious issues.

Word is he requested out. Gonna guess he and Carroll were not pals. But at least he coasted on their work for his ring, which he basically didn't do squat for.
To be honest I could see Carroll getting into a fight in a room without anyone else in it. He does require that level of college player committment from his guys though, and where he appears to have succeeded with Lynch who always struck me as the same "kinda guy" as Harvin, I guess some players aren't suited to his style.

Can't pin last season on Harvin though, he was injured for over half if it, and did make a big play in the Super Bowl.
Have you followed the NFL in the last 5 years or have you been under a rock? It is one of the typical dumb ass moves by the Jets that they've done for years now. He is expensive, but how many elite players do you think are going to sign wih the Jets. Their only option to get a high talent level veteran is through trade, and there are limited options to get a player with his raw talent, as surprisingly most teams with high talent level guys like to keep hold of them. The Jets have a plentiful amount of cap room and have brought in someone who can help take the pressure off an under fire young QB. Agreed, he isn't a coventional route running WR (but when you have a package of plays for QB#2 I guess you are not too concerned about doing everything by the book).

Still havent heard the conditions for the draft pick but it can't be as high as what Seattle paid Minny (reports are at worst it will be a 4th, at best a 6th). If I am the Jets, I can't let things carry on as is, and if the head coach/GM thinks that be making Harvin one lf the main men in the offence is going to help the team with their poor passing game, I say go for it.

As an enlighted above the rock dweller, if you are Idzik, how do you try to save your job at this point, or do you sit tight and take your pink slip along with Ryan?

When it comes to the specifics of Harvin’s exit, no one knows for sure what all went into it (besides the Seahawks). But as more reports emerge, it seems that the WR may have been against Russell Wilson.

According to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, the Seattle locker room was growing more divided by the week:

“One Seahawks player said the biggest reason the team traded the wide receiver was his increasing animosity toward Wilson. The player said Harvin was an accelerant in a locker room that was quickly dividing between Wilson and anti-Wilson.”

On top of that, Freeman suggests that some of the Seahawks’ black players feel Wilson isn’t black enough:

“There is also an element of race that needs to be discussed. My feeling on this-and it’s backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players-is that some of the black playersthink Wilson isn’t black enough.”
http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/2014/...ilson-some-players-feel-qb-isnt-black-enough/

That is a truly stupid narrative to throw out there under the guise of "anonymous sources". I really hate the anonymous source in this day and age, mostly because it seems like "journalists" especially sports "journalists" are willing to throw any stupid thing they can to illicit page hits out into the media under the umbrella of "an anonymous source said".

On top of that, Freeman suggests...:

“There is also an element of race that needs to be discussed. My feeling on this—and it’s backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players—is that some of the black players think Wilson isn’t black enough.”

SMDH, STFU and do your job. Sheesh. (Assuming this is based in any sort of reality).

The Jets just made another costly investment that isn't going to consistently improve their offense. They just added another headache of a player that values himself way more than what he puts out on the field. That is all that they did.
