Gillmore and Simmons

I'm fairly sure that most of us have concerns regarding the secondary. My question is how could we shore it up. The two weakest places are CB and Safety. Imo, the fastest way to do that would be to bring in Gillmore and/or Simmons. Personally I would prefer both, but the issues are they are both older and probably fairly expensive. Question: could we scrape up enough cash to get both? I expect that would require adjusting some contracts and probably letting a couple of guys go. I'm fairly sure that they would need to be on short term contracts and I doubt they would be interested in anything less than two years if even that short. If we are truly going to make a championship run, our defense needs to be top notch and imo this could do it. My main concerns are their ages, expense and not wanting to be in cap hell. Thoughts?

Simmons at S and moving Pitre to Nickel would make sense, but with the addition of Lassiter in the draft and the other 2 FA CB's picked up on the offseason I think we will be fine at CB...hell we might take over the moniker "No Fly Zone" this season with the talent we have at the DE bookends, and the solid LB's and DB's we have this season.

We have cap to sign both so in my mind something else must be why Caserio hasn't signed them.
Perhaps:
1. Nick & Demeco think we don't need them as we will go with what we have.
2. Players want too much

3. Nick & Demeco think they're not as good you (fans) think.

4. Nick has plan(s) for other players/positions.

If we have a need and we may not; we have the money to correct that need, and we do not correct; something else is going on behind the scenes or we are just wrong in our evaluation of the situation.

Caserio is holding back money in case a Roquan Smith or Buckner becomes available. IMHO

Simmons is in no hurry to sign, I doubt Gilmore is either
Agreed. Caserio, in a recent press conference, didn’t mention them by name but he did mention different “tiers” of free agents still available this time of year.

Paraphrasing he said: “There are players who are well known who aren’t on a team because they are waiting for camp injuries to happen. Or quite frankly they would rather not go through a full training camp at this point in their careers.”

“And there are players like the player recently signed, Malik Fisher, who just finished playing spring ball. Who is trying to compete for a roster spot.”

I think Simmons and Gilmore fall into that would rather wait for an ideal situation to pop up with the added bonus they don’t have to participate in a full training camp category.

Simmons, yes, if at all reasonable. Adding him transforms that secondary IF he is still relatively sharp and on his game. I'd save anything else for a DT who might become available.

We've got depth but it's all lunch pail guys that should be rotation players. We don't have a true unquestioned starter in the group.

Sounds like defense had a dominating day today at training camp and totally frustrated and shutdown the O....I know its only training camp but it provides a glimpse of the possibility of the potential this group has.

It's typical that the defense starts out faster than the offense, but it's nice to see that the D is coming together.

Actually I was thinking more so of Gilmore than Simmons. But for whatever reason Simmons performance dropped off a lot last year from previous years. Injuries?
What makes you think Simmons performance dropped off last year?

Pff stats. I’m being a bit picky but his stats are starting to decline. Great guy but at what cost? I thought somewhere I read he had knee issues last year.

I see a guy still making all pro teams despite playing on a bad team in the same division as Mahomes and Herbert. Think he’d be a plus starter in Houston.

Then why isn’t he signed?…by anyone? I like this guy. But why do you think he will exceed his history. I just see another potential Ward.

Probably does not agree with the market in terms of pay this season. With that in mind only “leverage” he has is to not sign until a team needs him (via injury or underperformance by the team’s current options).
I just don’t think our D is struggling at that spot. Until more Mixon news comes out I’d be more worried about the gap between him and the other RB’s. Probably could only be fixed with a trade.

It would be a luxury addition for sure. But we learned last season with all the injuries at safety that depth is never a bad thing. If they plan to move Pitre to nickel more then having two steady vets in Simmons/Ward at safety would allow for some creative coverages.

So technically I think we get $4M back from the Autry PED deal (games missed,) so there's some extra seed money to bring in one of the remaining secondary players...unless we're keeping it for a JJ Watt playoff return!

I am interested in how you come up with 4 million? His base salary is ~$3 million ÷ 17 games and then multiply that 6 suspended, my math is a savings of just over a million dollars.

Lets go get him! Simmons would be the cherry on top to complete this team and ready it for a championship run.
I'm for it. Simmons has created 14 turnovers the past 2 seasons. My concern is why Simmons hasn't been signed, yet. Is there some injury issue we don't know about? Simmons credentials suggest he should already be on a team with a nice contract.

Most vets signed back in March. Camp may be a consideration but I think there must be an issue that has kept good offers from coming.
He's a 30 year old vet at devalued position.

He's gotten offers (re-signing in Denver and Tennessee) but who knows how good the offers are and what he's looking for.

I think to this point he's been offered money or to play for a good team, but not both.

First, Safety has never been a "valued position" so it couldn't be counted as devalued. The top 10 Safeties average $15.75 million AAV. That's higher than off ball LBs, TEs, Centers, and RBs.

There have been some very good deals given to Safeties this offseason. Based off past performance, you'd think Simmons could get a Marcus Williams type deal (14 million AAV). But he hasn't gotten that deal, and there hasn't been a good explanation fpr that, to date.

Okay if we're being pedantic, "he plays a non-value position and is 30" does that help?

Marcus Williams is 27 and signed that deal when he was what? 25? That's not the contract comparable I'd be looking at for expectations for Simmons.

Texans Not Interested In S Justin Simmons

Houston has not yet submitted a contract offer to Simmons, Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reports. That could change in the future, but a lack of interest this deep into the summer suggests the Texans are satisfied with their incumbent options on the backend. Simmons was released earlier this offseason by the Broncos, and he has not appeared close to an agreement with a new team.

So Simmons watch is finally ended. He accepts a 1 year deal, but no details yet as to how much $$

Looks like the Texans really do like what they have in their safety room for now

For now.

Still wouldn't be shocked if we see a waiver pickup or trade for a S at some point in the season.

Murray in fairness has looked decent but for some reason MJ Stewart has not looked so good from what I've seen in the preseason games so far.
