Giants TE Daniel Fells’ NFL career likely over due to MRSA infection: source

The Giants presented tight end Daniel Fells with a game ball from their win over the 49ers when they spoke to him via Skype from their team meeting on Monday morning. Unfortunately, it likely will be the last game ball Fells ever receives.

The career of the 32-year-old tight end is almost certainly over because of the MRSA infection he's been hospitalized with for more than a week, according to an NFL source familiar with his situation. He has already had five surgeries to help him fight the infection, and is likely to have one or two more before he leaves the hospital, the source said.

And while the source said Fells' foot remains intact -- despite one report that said he had part of his foot removed -- enough damage has been done that the source said "I would be really surprised" if he ever plays football again.

The bright side is that Fells' condition is apparently improving and even Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he has been led to believe Fells will make a full recovery.

This goes to what I have cautioned here for years. Steroid injections into tissues, especially near joints are NOT BENIGN. They decrease inflammation, and by the same mechanisms can decrease rather than improve healing, decrease immunity and ability to fight bacteria/infection......that may have even been introduced by the injections themselves. Once introduced, their negative effects cannot be neutralized or reversed in any timely fashion. Fells sprained his ankle, had routine steroid injection to his ligaments, developed an infection which could not be controlled due to the effects of the immune-inhibiting steroid...........the infection spread from the soft tissues of the ankle to involve the bones (osteomyelitis), necessitating removal of the involved bone tissue. I have taken care of enough patients over the years with this problem involving virtually all of the major and more minor joints of the body to be critical of the cavalier use of such routine treatments.

That's really a tough situation. Don't know much about the player but it's still saddening to read. I wish good health hope all the best for him in his future endeavors.
