Geno Smith

I just really started watching college football this year and have seen Geno Smith a few times now and really don't see why he's getting so much hype. When he plays against a good defense he really doesn't do much at all it seems. Is he going to go #1 overall? If so, is he really going to be worth it at the NFL level?

Overrated is the term I would use to describe him. He throws well when not under pressure, he has some good receivers that have bailed him out a few times, but he just isn't consistent enough to be anything more than the next Michael Vick (2012 Vick). He was getting hyped up because people thought he would be the Heisman, while the most likely Heisman winner, Colin Klein, is quietly having a much better season. Klein is a Senior, and I expect him to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, but he might be a late first. Klein is exactly what I hope Johnny Manziel becomes over time, a smart QB who doesn't force the ball, one who reads routes progressively, a patient runner, and the kind of guy that anticipates WRs getting open. He looks pretty good, and could become an NFL QB if given a couple years to develop on the depth chart. If nothing else, he would be an excellent wildcat QB.

That's what I was thinking watching K State at WV last week. Klein completely out-played Geno Smith in his own house. He has a good arm it looks like but he has a long wind-up like Tebow. Either was I think Klein would be better than Geno Smith who got all these accolades just because he threw all over a pathetically bad Baylor defense and then barely beat another horrible Texas defense.

He's had a few bad games but most College QB's do....I also think he is overrated. That said he is a solid NFL prospect. Someone will make him an early pick.

Over-rated is often mis-used. He is over-rated by CBS draft scout for sure as much maybe more than former #1 rated overall QB Matt Barkley. There rankings are near meaningless. I would wager not one NFL scouting department ranks him #1 on their big board. Of course some team is always desperate for a QB. Big difference between College spread & NFL pro formation taking snaps under center, reading progressions & hitting super tight fast moving windows.
