Geno Atkins signs 5 year, $55 million extension

being a little selfish here, any chance this (the second best interior lineman) will affect watt's upcoming contract? if we can keep watt closer to geno than to mario, it'll make a big difference continuing to move forward.

As good as JJ is I do think he is going to have to face the reality he is a DT playing 3-4 DE. Ngata is the highest paid player in a similar position at 5 years $61 mil.

Would Watt's agent try to sell him as a DE though? That would raise his price significantly.

Geno ATKINS at 55 million seems like a deal.

Position aside, watts agent would be stupid not to sell impact. He might be playing a traditionally unglamourous position, but he doesn't have a traditional impact from the position.

If he continues his level of play, he has as much impact as a premiere edge rushing DE or a top corner.

I think if Watt were on the open market he'd command a Mario type contract.

I am sure his agent will argue everything he can. I do Not believe he will get QB money. Mario's contract avergas $16 mil. Ngata"s averages $12.2 mil. I expect JJ Watt to go in the middle as the highest paid 3-4 DE/DT.

Probably Haynesworth's numbers.
Seven years, $100M???

If you folks are looking for a parallel Universe for which to compare & contrast of what to expect it will take to re-sign JJ Watt you've to go back to year 1993. The year that Reggie White became a free agent. After Reggie White signed with Green Bay only John Elway and Dan Marino were making more money than Reggie. For some that is a very scary thought.....

As players that is a good comparison albeit a bit premature, but the contracts can't be compared because everyone was all over the map figuring out the new cap. White's contract had no guaranteed money other than the signing bonus and the salaries went down over the life of the deal.

Also, in this brave new world, there's always creative financing for a dude that seems to have his head squarely above his shoulders.

McNair is a very good businessman.
I tend to think that he knows what to do if he really wants it.

There's life after football, if you know what I mean.

He deserves it. Heck of a player.

Sounds like a heck of a human as well. Just saw him on Fox Football Daily - promoted Sickle Cell charities, very humble and when asked about what the first thing he bought after the contact signing, he replied, nothing, I'm just going to save it, and see how I'm doing after the season is finished. Sounds like the perfect antidote to the dumbassery the NFL has been seeing recently - glad the young man got his recognition.
