Game 5 Thread: Texans @ Cowboys

Why are we still running the ball.

Well, it's hard to argue with a 3rd and 1 run in long FG range with 34 seconds in the half and a timeout remaining.

If you don't make it, you run the clock down to nothing, time out, try for 3. If you make it you spike and then go for 7.

If you pass, you either complete (probably not in the end zone) and the clock runs, you incomplete and Dallas gets 2 or 3 plays in, or worse you get sacked out of FG range.

Nothing wrong with playing it close to the vest. Kubiak allowed the team to go in up at the half. Great coaching of an over-matched team.

If we had even an average running game, we would be owning this game.

Didn't you hear?--we have a "pretty good" run game.

Farkin A--can you imagine what our passing game would look like if we could run the ball. DD wasn't better than mid pack but he looks like a pro-bowler right now.

So halftime question.

Is it the running back or the o-line run blocking that is jacked? (Keep in mind Dallas is pretty good run defense)

Both are to blame, but if our RB wouldn't be so slow those -1 yard "gains" should be 2-3 yard gains.

Whats changed between last years running game and this years? Upgraded center, new RBs, what else?

For the second half, we need to just abandon the run. Carr is completeing 75% of his passes so we can nickle and dime it down the field, then take a shot deep eveynow and then. Lets go D, keep it up

Halftime - The running game is really holding us back. DC is playing a good game. The defense has been impressive. They have been able to run the ball better than us. If that continues we will have an uphill battle in the second half. We need to burn them deep on the next 3rd and 1.

It's almost completely on the offensive line IMO. It just aggravates the problem that Dayne is absolutely not the kind of back who's going to create anything without a clear shot to the line of scrimmage.

I am not a Dayne hater by any stretch of the imagination. I think he's been misused for almost his entire career and I think that Houston right now isn't any better a fit for him. If we could get some blocking he could do some damage but we can't block anyone.

They run block like old people... ah nevermind, not here.

Sweet.

Penalties. Special teams. Both areas that the Texans are better than the Cowboys statistically going into the game.

Two half football, guys. Need two.

I hope Kunes is up for some "experimentation" 2 RB in the 2nd half. this 1-2 yd. BS w/ Dayne may cost us this game. Might as well give Lundy or Gado some reps.

Gado was in some and didn't do squat either. Only run that looked okay was to the outside with Dayne where he got the facemask call.

The weird thing is while Dayne always looked outside in NY--it is almost like he doesn't know the word bounce in Texas. Dude has to do more than hump his OLmen.

the only way we are going to get anything on the ground is if we get roy williams off the line of scrimage and into coverage. that means 3 receiver sets and some big plays in the passing game.

Implimenting a new blocking scheme as well, or combo of two styles?

Digging what your saying as well Herv, I'm thinking it's more oline than running back. There just doesn't seem to be any holes being made... even small ones. Not even ones where you can say "well, if he would've run left vs. right" or something to that effect.

But as mentioned, we're going up against a good run D as well.

You can never abandon the running game. Once that happens, the superior team (Cowboys) will dominate and blow the Texans out. Running the ball, no matter how much yards you get, keeps the Defense honest. Otherwise, it's turn the lights out on the Carr.

At least run some misdirection type running plays to throw off Dallas' pursuit. We seem to be running the same HB dive every time. Houston D playing a whale of a game.

Indeed. He's not even making the "1 cut" he's supposed to get in Kubiaks vaunted "1 cut and go" system. All I see Dayne doing is running into the back of a blocker or, sometimes at the last second falling down to the side of a blocker who he almost ran into the back of.

That tells me those guys aren't getting their job done and he's encountering them a lot earlier than he's expecting to. There hasn't been a cutback lane in this entire game so nevermind that.

TWO whole carries, that's not giving anybody else a chance. Speed runs to the outside gaps is what's called for and that's simply not Dayne's strong suit.

True that. That coulda been Trent Green, part 2.

That was very much like Trent Green and just the same I say get down David. The slide is for your protection not to allow you to get to the first down marker. Get down before the defender is committed to the hit.

Intrantry.. speak the gospel brother!

ZERO SACKS for David Carr in the first half. I love it.

We can't run block for crap though.

Isnt that crazy, the first 4 years our run blocking was at least decent and we couldnt protect Carr if our lives depended on it. Now we get some pass pro, and our run blocking is horrid.

DeMarcus Ware got some great jumps, we better watch out with him because the way he is reading the snap, its only a matter of time
