Game 5...Rock or Drop...Kansas City Chiefs!

Watching this monday night game.. KC's defense doesn't scare me never really has to be honest....especially without Eric Berry. Peters just got burned for a long TD by Pryor. their offense on the other hand...pretty scary with Hill and Hunt although they haven't done anything thus far against washington.

Don't forget Kelce... Their OL just lost it's starting RG and their center was already out for this game however. Should be some holes up front for the best front 7 in the NFL to exploit.

Vernon Davis just smoked Justin Houston for a huge gain & Marcus Peters just gave up a 2nd TD.

I've checked the local listings, and don't find anyone broadcasting it in Houston. Guess I'll miss it. Oh well.
Monday night games are on ESPN. The only time you'll see a Monday night game aired locally is when the Texans are playing. Then, they usually air on channel 11.

This game was very telling. Washington moved the ball early against them, but didn't fully capitalize. KC defense got better as the game went along, but I didn't see an elite defense. This is three games now they have given up 20+ points. Offensively, it's all about contain and don't give up the big play. Reid loves misdirection, but they are not an "explosive" offense. Texans will have to get off the field on 3rd down because they can grind. But scoring 23 points at home, kicking a last second FG for the win. Not exactly a dominating performance. The Chiefs will easily be the best team the Texans have faced, but there was plenty to take away from the game tonight to prepare.

Keys to the game:

1. Fast start by the offense (KC starts slow and comes on in 4Q)
2. WFV deep (gave up two 40+ yard catches yesterday)
2. Defensive edge containment (discipline, no hero ball by Watt/Clowney)
3. Where the F- is Kelce? (Seriously, where the F- is he???)

KC has played close games going into the 4th quarter all season. They had 3 red zone FG's last night. This is a team that is winning, but doing so with late game heroics. It hasn't been curb-stomping domination. That kind of football luck only holds for so long.

That being said, we would be foolish to think Watson and the Texans are going to roll with another 400+ yard, 30+ point performance day. They are due for a letdown just as much as the Chiefs are. Hoping the home field advantage helps. This is not a game I would put any money down on.

Past history is not relevant, we have a total new offense. They are undefeated but are not unbeatable. If our defense plays it's best game of the year and D4 can continue to grow and put up 30 points, I think we can beat them. Will be a good test for D4 and the team to see where we are. I fully expect OB to continue to play with an expanded offense.

This game is winnable for us and I think we match up well with them. They have a short week and we are playing at home. It is a National broadcast and D4 IS NOT afraid of the spotlight. Might go down to last possession. I don't think either team will be blown out.

Texans 31
Chiefs 27

There are 2 things, other then his legs, that I saw about Watson. He makes great fake hand offs. That will fool line backers and the secondary of the defense and either freeze them or draw them out of coverage. He hides the ball well after a fake to his backs. This alone can create down field plays for his weapons, and did during the Titans game.
The second thing is, he keeps his eyes moving down field when he drops back. Instead of fixating on the called receiver for the play, he's able to look off a defensive back and throw the ball the other way to an open receiver.
These 2 things, and his legs, will drive defensive coordinators crazy and keep defenses back on their heels.
This isn't something that rookies are usually able to do, but Watson has been pulling it off almost flawlessly.
If he's able to continue this, the Chiefs might just share a very similar fate that the Titans had to deal with.
The good thing is, Watson has the weapons to be able to pull it off so perfectly.
I expect him to continue to get better every week and this game will be no exception.
He'll lead to scores on long drives and keep JJ and the boys fresh on the sidelines just waiting to go in and get another 3 and out.
Watson will be the rookie of the year, lead this team to another AFC South title and just possibly to the Super Bowl. We might even get to see our Texans win it all.
This isn't our same ole Texans.
Go Texans!

So you’re telling me we just found a QB and a kicker in the same season? All while we still have a top tier defense? I’m more excited about this team than I’ve been in a long time, but man, does it seem too good to be true... I am expecting us to go toe-to-toe with what looks to be the best team in the league right now. My hopes are up and I am vulnerable lol! Don’t let me down Texans!

Because after a while, you have to stop calling it luck.

Seriously though, good post.

Yeah, I probably have some unconscious bias that if the Texans were winning those same games, it would be because they are a good team.

Last night was the first KC game I've watched this season. I saw a good team, not a great team, hang in there all game and come out on top at the end. Just saying that 4-0 sounds a lot more dominating than the reality of the games.

I'm not scared because they are 4-0. I'm scared because for the most part, an Andy Reid coached team is disciplined and doesn't make many mistakes. Watson took advantage of both NE and TEN in part because of their lack of discipline. This will definitely be a test for him.

But I didn't see a SB caliber team play last night. We are only 4 games into the season though.

Why would it take 30+ to beat KC? They've not played a good defense yet and scored 27/24 their last two games.

Washington tonight is a good test for KC. This is the first legitimate defense they have faced this year. The Redskins offense is no slouch either.

Will be very interesting game to watch tonight.

Well Washington and Houston's defense are very closely ranked on team defense stats. Both are right about average. The KC offense put up 23 on Washington's defense, so we should expect something similar against Houston. I think it will take at least 28 points to win this game, I just hope they can get something going. The two good defenses we have faced were Jax and Cincy, put up 7 and 13 points there. KC is ranked 10, so slightly lower, but still a strong team.

The problem with using the Jagoffs and Shingles as a defensive comparison is we started off the 1st with a game plan for Savage. Short week for Watson on the 2nd game coming in to his first start. Things have looked better since, largely due to the improvement of Watson and somewhat due to the easier defenses. Couldn't have worked out better. I think we'll be fine. I think the defense takes another step as does Watson.

Started off -3.5 for KC this morning.

I just saw a betting line that had Houston at -1.

Watching last night, I feel like our offense is better than Washingtons from a receiver stand point. Should be able to score a bit against there defense.

Just keep the ball away from Peters lol. Should be ok if that is the case.

The jet sweeps and misdirection play will be the toughest obstacle for this defense to overcome. They are going to attack Clowney in particular early and often until he proves he can hold the edge and not get fooled. Hopefully Vrabel has a good gameplan for them!

Offensively Justin Houston will be a handful to gameplan for... this is going to be a tough task for our O-line. But the good guys will get the job done!

The Redskins Dline was abusing the KC Oline on passing downs. Smith made lots of plays by running the ball to get away from the pressure. If Reader, Watt, et al can mount a pass rush, maybe some good things will happen. But they gotta keep Smith from making the plays by running like last night.

I'm worried that the KC team is just too damned fast on offense and ST's. This will be a tough test for the fellas on Kirby.

They are having some serious O-Line issues and lose there best one for our game.

I hope we rush 3 or 4 every time and really focus on TE and RB out of backfield.

We are a good matchup with them.

The 1st week our team was not ready. We had to bench our starting QB and the offensive line was beyond awful. Week 2 we trotted out a rookie QB. It was a very short week with only a walk though for preparation. You have to factor that into the equation as well.

We were able to stop him last year when we beat them 19-12.
Exactly. We were very physical in that game and hit Kelce a lot. He ended up with 5 receptions for 34 yards. One was an 11-yard catch early in the game. After that he didn't do very much: 4 catches for 23 yards the rest of the game. We held the Chiefs to only 3 points to start the 4th quarter. They scored 9 points in the 4th quarter.

We beat them in Week 2 by surprising them with Fuller and forcing 3 fumbles that we recovered. Osweiler looked like he could play until the Pats exposed him the following week. I wouldn't put a lot of stock into last year relating to this year. Hill was an unknown at that point for everyone and Hunt was still in college

On the other side of the coin, we have Watson. The last two games, this have been a totally different team with him at QB. Here is to hoping that continues to hold true. I am feeling pretty good about our chances to score points on their D. It is hard not to feel optimistic coming off a game where Watson walked the team down the field and into the end zone on almost every possession.

OK, then you have to factor in weeks 3 and 4 were against two of the 3 worst defenses in the league. Getting back to my original point, this game against KC will tell us a lot about this team and its potential.

My high school coach used to say "Whats the best way to handle a good D lineman? You read him"

Neutralize Houston by optioning him and forcing him to make a decision and react accordingly.

The Titans were looking stout if you actually watched their games verses going off of stats. Ststs have KC ranked either 25th -27th. So are we going to use that as a reason to why we beat them ( that's if we beat them).

The Patriots defense has taken a big leap backwards from last year.

It's crazy people have been saying this same exact statement since the Patriots game. Last week was suppose to be this big test as well. Hmmm passed with flying colors lol.

Every week is a test!!!

KC is 25th in yards allowed per game. They are 10th in points allowed per game. One of those things is much more important than the other... KC is 4th in turnover differential at +5 through 4 games, Houston is 13th with a net of 0. KC is also the only undefeated team in the league, so yeah, beating them would be a big deal. The Texans need to bring their A game to a Sunday night nationally televised broadcast, which they have not been known to do in the past. Gonna have to step it up to win on Sunday night. This is the time for Deshaun to show off his big game clutch play that he had in college!

Last season the Texans sucked in the turnover differential and excelled in the W/L by one score. I've mentioned how both of those are cyclical. That appears to be the case this year. The Texans are even in turnover differential and 1-1 in one score games. Hopefully Sunday nights game is by more than one score and in the good guy's favor.

The Texans needs to bring their A game every week. Yes the Chiefs are pretty good in the red zone. But we have been super efficient since Watson became the starter. Our defense has been pretty good as well.

Should be a very good game.

Need to control the ball on offense and get off the field on 3rd down. Start fast and be able to stay versatile on offense. Hunt is the key, he has looked damn good. Texans have to keep the run game in check and give up the explosive plays down field as well as not miss tackles making small gains into huge. We got to take our shots with Fuller down field to loosen up the D and keep Houston from reeking havoc. Pass rush has to show up and keep Smith from making too many plays with his legs.

PFFELO Power Rankings - Week 5

Below is the fifth installment of our weekly PFFELO rankings. Like all ELO systems, PFFELO is an iterative system that updates each team’s rating after each game based on two things: how well they played against their opponent and how well they were expected to play against their opponent. The PFFELO rating system measures the former using our unique offensive, defensive and special teams grades, while the latter is determined by the PFFELO ratings leading up to the game and where the game is played.

For example, a heavy favorite playing at home is expected to outplay the visitor, so a victory would result in only a small rise in their PFFELO rating and a similarly-small decrease in the defeated team’s, but if an upset were to happen, the visiting team would see their PFFELO rating rise substantially, and the home team’s see a similarly-sized drop.

Sometimes in football the best team does not win, and PFFELO accounts for these oddities by using our grades. Hence there will be teams rated higher or lower in this system than their win-loss record would suggest.

#1

LAST WEEK: 3
After holding off an upstart Washington team at home on Monday night, the Chiefs make their first appearance atop of the PFFELO rating system. The league’s lone undefeated team possesses a quarterback in Alex Smith that hasn’t committed a turnover through four games, and whose PFF grade (86.2 – third among quarterbacks) reflects this. Smith’s adjusted completion percentage (86.0), passer rating on deep passes (147.3) and passer rating with using play action (119.5) are first among his position group, while his passer rating when pressured (134.5) is second only to Tom Brady.

[The Texans are ranked #18]
