Game 1 - Denver vs Carolina

well first game first Loss pick em ...... Im really starting to hate kubes anywho I think 90% of America thought Carolina would win

I am amazed that Carolina lost. There were moments when they simply looked unbeatable. 16-0 flashed through my head a couple times. But they lost. Wow.

I thought the same. It helped they got a couple turnovers, but Carolina certainly looked like they showed up ready to run the table. There's a reason Denver is the reigning champ though.

Even with the kid at quarterback, Denver's offense looked a lot better against a great defense today than they looked all of last year. Clean up the turnovers and they might be an even better team this season, especially if they figure out how to get more push up the middle on defense.

Kubiak kept it easy for his rookie QB, kept pounding the ball, and playing solid defense.

Newton was locked on to KB and Olsen while forgetting about everyone else. Last year he distributed the ball so well, it made them tough to match up against. It's a given that once you beat up on Cam and he doesn't get calls, he's going to pout and ends up checking out. Rockets fans are all to familiar with that.

Overall, awesome game. Both teams had a chance to win it late.

Gano missing the FG to win it reminded me of the time we played the Redskins and when he missed it winning FG Andre Ware yelled 'Gano good'.

Cam antics (both the ups and downs) get on my nerves too but damn he's one hell of a player. That team takes too many chances with scripted QB runs. Someone is going to light him up eventually.

Knowing how much Kubiak emphasizes protecting the football I bet those picks killed his soul and they'll be working overtime on cleaning that up.

Yeah he wasn't enjoying the first half much. The turnovers combined with procedure mistakes like the 12 man penalties had him fuming on the sideline. I bet the players might not be as excited about having a long week once the coaches put them to work.

So my take on Siemian:

Nobody expecting him to shake the world, and he didn't. He did however make good decision on a consistent basis throughout the game, and when your team is getting major yardage from your running game and backs, that's all you need from the QB. You can try to point at his INTs as negatives, but they were both under heavy pressure, one was just a freak amazing play by Lotulelei and Davis, and the other he just couldn't follow through on the hit he took, very few QBs in the league could have made something happen in either situation. During games where the running game isn't a dominating force (like in the first quarter) he'll have to step up, but we do know that the good thing about a Kubiak offense is he'll give time for a QB to get ready if he has a strong running game. And good news is they've already cleared one of the best defenses in the league from their schedule so when they do need him, he should have better odds of delivering.

Sidenote: It's nice to see them utilizing Virgil Green at TE finally, he'll be good for them.

The defense is really missing Vance Walker and Malik Jackson.

maybe its just me, but what is all this botching about Cam Newton and the hits he was taking? Other than that helmet to helmet hit at the end of the game, I wasn't seeing a bunch of dirty plays. And on that play, they called a penalty that would have had the Panthers set back for like 15 yards and completely out of FG range so it isn't like they let the Broncs get away with it. I saw a ton of blitz packages from Wade where his guys were simply getting to the QB and smashing him when they had their chances and that is what you do to disrupt the QB. Is this just a bunch of pussified BS from the Cam Newton fans or did I just miss a ton of dirty plays that weren't called?

Either way, I thought Cam answered questions real well in his press conference and seemed a lot more mature for this game at least. The media was trying pretty hard to bait him into saying things about the officiating.

Exactly. The 1st one on the sandwich sack was discretionary and I thought the right call was made. The only reason there was helmet contact was because Cam sank over a foot when hit low in the back. Would have been totally clean if his head level hadn't gone down. That's a good no call to me.

Other than the one play in the 4th, I wouldn't say any dirty hits on him, one might have been questionable when he had scrambled. I think the only point I tried to make was that he was taking a beating overall. It's a good thing he'll have some extra days to recuperate.

The complaining and whining about poor Cam has been off the charts today and last night Cak. That is why I asked if I had missed something. One thing I get sick and tired of is a lot of the calls the officials make on rushers where they are going full speed and the QB panic releases the football to avoid a sack at the last second, and then the rusher is called for roughing the passer. How in the hell is a guy who is 225-260 in most cases supposed to stop in their tracks when they're going full speed at a guy without still hitting him? Its ridiculous at the way that these rules work at times. We do have to remember that this is football, and its a dangerous sport. There is simply no away around that. I wish they'd tighten up the intentional grounding rules, because way to often a QB just panic throws the ball just close enough to a receiver where its legal knowing full well that it was made just to avoid the sack and they had no possible way of getting a completion, nor were they even trying. The defensive player is always getting a penalty in the process when they hit the QB a millisecond later. :smiliepalm:

Denver's QB looked okay, all things considered. It will be interesting, though, to see how his season goes now that teams start to have tape on him. Kid certainly has an arm and appears to be pretty accurate with it.

Those screen passes still made me nervous. I kept having Schaub flashbacks and how Kubiak hung the old boy out to dry when he lost his zip on the passes. Kubiak has a young guy now with a strong arm, so he can make the throws. But damn if it doesn't make me think it's just a pick 6 waiting to happen with the right defensive read. Denver's offense is a one trick pony without a running game. Bootlegs and screen passes are easy to figure out if that's all you've got. Fortunately for Denver, great D and consistent running game are formulas for success.
