Gallery gets number 76.
Oakland Raiders: Robert Gallery had big shoes to fill anyway as the No. 2 overall pick by the Raiders. Now he's got a big number to live up to, too.

Gallery participated in the Raiders' Thursday morning walk-through with his hyperextended right elbow still in an elastic wrap and a new jersey bearing the No. 76 -- the old number of retired Raiders lineman Steve Wisniewski. Gallery was given No. 74 upon his arrival to camp.

The switch is permanent, the Raiders told the San Francisco Chronicle.

"It's something I wanted to do. I thought he would be a good guy to follow,'' Gallery told the Chronicle. Gallery asked Wisniewski for permission to wear his number.

Wisniewski was an eight-time Pro Bowler at guard who retired in 2001 after 13 seasons to pursue the ministry.

"I was honored that he said I could wear it,'' Gallery told the paper.

I'm with you Sassy.

I thought when a number was retired it was never to be used again.

Or is it like it is with singers. They have 2 or 3 "last" tours like Cher has.

Maybe nothing is ever really retired anymore.

Well he asked the guy who's number was retired, and got his okay before using his number. Now if they had unretired his number just to apease Gallery without consulting the former player who's number was retired, then I could see plenty of reason to be upset. They'll be in a pickle if Gallery turns out to be a great LT, and in 15 yrs or so they want to retire his number as well. Then the number would be assigned to two all time Raider greats.

I'm with Thirdeye. The article said the player (Wiesnewski) was retired...not the #76.

If you do a Yahoo search on retired Oakland Raiders numbers, many of the links will explain how the Raiders do not retire numbers. They never have...including #76.

True, but whether the number is officially retired or not, Gallery still had to ask permission to use the number. Otherwise he would have been #76 from the beginning. So in effect the number is still retired. The Raiders traditions might dictate it moreso than anything else.

Teams with no retired numbers---Dallas,Oakland,Carolina,Jacksonville,Baltimore Ravens, and the Texans. Info from NFL record and fact book 2004.

Dallas doesnt have one retired!?!?!?!

Page 372 of the NFL record book has all the teams listed with the name and number of whoever is retired. Dallas has none next to them. Side note, The Bears have the most with 13 retired numbers. The Oilers -- Earl, Jim Norton, Munchak,Bethea, and Matthews are listed for Tennessee. Indy has all the old Balt. Colts. Ariz the old retired numbers from Chi. and St. Louis Cards.

That is hard to believe

Well I don't know much about the "Girls" but I do know they have their "Ring of Honor" in Texas Stadium. And I believe they don't have number besides those names in that ring. But I could be wrong.
