Gaffney Might Miss Start of Training Camp
Fourth-year wide receiver Jabar Gaffney has quietly stayed on the sidelines during offseason workouts, recovering from surgery on his left shoulder. According to a report in Thursday's Houston Chronicle, Gaffney's absence from on-field work may continue into the onset of training camp, scheduled to begin on July 29.
Gaffney waited until just two months ago to have the surgery performed to repair some damage to his rotator cuff. He told the paper that it was something he had originally hoped would heal on its own.
Gaffney played through part of the 2004 season with the injury, though a hard fall on the shoulder in the finale against the Browns intensified the pain. Gaffney elected to have the surgery, fearing that a good hit to the shoulder could cause him to miss significant playing time this fall.
The absence from offseason workouts is poor timing for Gaffney. The Texans have installed major changes to their passing attack, and competition at the wide receiver position is as tough as it has been since the inception of the franchise. With Corey Bradford re-signed and Derick Armstrong returning, Gaffney will also have to fight second-year receiver Kendrick Starling and rookie Jerome Mathis for playing time once he has fully healed.
