From PFW-Casserly in Over His Head

In the 10/17 issue of PFW with Eli Manning on the cover, I found this nugget in the second paragraph of the Audibles section of the paper, which contains quotes from "NFL scouts, coaches and front office personnel, who requested anonymity." As usual, the link to Audibles on the PFW site doesn't contain any info.

"Stick a fork in David Carr's option bonus. He's not seeing it. Then again, Charley Casserly will blame the coaches again. ... He's a good guy, but he has been in over his head for 15 years. First, Chris Palmer is thrown under the bus. Dom Capers will be thrown under the bus next. Wake up and smell the coffee. He's got all the answers. My question is: How long can he go blaming the coaches before it catches up to him."

That quote was probably made before the Titans game. Whether Carr gets his bonus remains to be seen and will depend on his play for the rest of the year. But I like what this person said about Casserly.

I think, but cannot prove, that Casserly has some family, friends and underlings posting on his behalf on this board, because I can't imagine that on a board with fans as knowledgeable as the ones here, there are so many mindless people who have taken the Kool-Aid and think Casserly deserves to keep his job.

What the Texans have done is gone for too many "projects" instead of solid people.. They went with a boom or bust attitude and it has hurt them. Hollings,Wand,Milford Brown for example (I don't want to list all but someone can) were projects with potential. somehow either we misread that (at one time the Texans were paying the scouts pretty well (by reports I read) and either our scouts are off or we have a coaching staff that is not using the strengths of the guys ..

One thing I want to add. where I think it bit us also was our "we don't want to overpay in the FA" Well it bit us because if we couldn't figure out Wand couldn't beat out Riley why didn't we go after a legit LT (guy let go from arizona ..Davis? or see if we could get Verba to drop some of his demands (maybe they did)) .. paying a little more to protect Carr could go along way IMO

Casserly's approach reminds me of what Gil Brandt did at the end of his tenure with the Cowboys--he spent years picking prospects with great potential on paper, but not proven players. It was like he wanted to prove how much smarter he was than his peers by finding gems others couldn't see.

But more often than not, Brandt's choices turned out to be busts and the result was years of mediocrity in Dallas until Jimmy Johnson took over the team's football operations.

I hope history repeats itself here, but I'm not holding my breath. JJ has quite a lucrative and cushy gig right now...

I agree yet I wonder at the time if it was because who we had starting and these guys looked "great" to us.

I am always surprised with how many people are quick to defend Casserly based on his record with the Skins. I get so tired of hearing how he built their Super Bowl teams. The problem is that was about 15 years ago. His draft record for the last ten years has been horrible. Casserly drafting + Capers coaching = train wreck of a football team.

We've got a mess and nobody among the coaches or GM should be retained at year-end. I'd personally like to see something done with the coaches right now. The team's quit on them and something more needs to be stirred-up. I know that for now the only feasible thing is to can Capers and promote one of his cronies because you can't change an entire system in one week's preparation but let's get this house-cleaning party started. It really can't get any worse IMO.

It would make more sense to name Toro the interim head coach to finish out the year... but this organization can't be expected to make a good decision.

I'd rather see Caserly fired in mid season more than the coaches. What is he doing now anyway? If they fire Capers he is going to pick the replacement.
Hire a new GM and let him pick his new staff but get him on board now and he can do lots of the ground work. Or if the person you want isn't available go the rest of the season without one. Then you will have plent of time to find out how many people are interested.
