Foxsports.com's early mock draft

I don't think we'll take a DT with our 1st round pick. The only D-lineman I think the Texans would consider is Gaines Adams. If the guy the Texans want isn't available where we draft, I wouldn't be surprised if we trade up and get an extra pick or two for later.

The Texans have alot more money invested in our DE with Weaver and Williams new contracts. I think payne will get cut to save money. So we will be lacking depth a DT.

The DLine cap is mostly Weaver and Payne, though. The 3 first round picks added together is a little over 6 million in cap, less than either David Carr or Andre Johnson.

i dont see us takin another D-line men, i really want the texans to trade down, and try to get Reggie Nelson, i think hes the best play maker at safety we can get in the draft

I find it hard to believe that the Texans would take Branch when Marshawn Lynch, our choice of CB's, & our choice of safeties are still on the board. Those are much more glaring needs. While Branch is more talented than TJ, a move like that would be as inept as the drafting of TJ was. I don't see it happening.

My responce to that is which teams did we play this year that 1. we shut down their run enough to hold a fourth quarter lead. And 2. knew for a fact our d-line could hold a third or forth and short. You may well be right. But again selecting a run stuffing wide body, a true two gap DT... plugs a big hole
on this team. Their our other canidates out there no doubt. Just be nice to hang on hats on a true starter unstead of flakey gamble in the first round. And two of the four you just mentioned in your post are that in my book. You call it inept. I call it the most prudent thing they coud do. Plug one hole good. With one good player. That...in my book is prudent, not inept. Lynch and Leron are both reaches in my book. Even at nine.

I would take DT in the 1st rd. We need to build strong foundation on D specially front 7. Taking OLB in the 2nd rd(hope we get DB from FA). When we have solid front7, our DB would look much better. We are only a few palyers away to become legit NFL D.

GO TEXANS!!

Although I would much rather have a playmaking-ball-hawking FS like Laron Landry or Reggie Nelson, I wouldn't be upset with the Branch pick.

I would pick Branch, landry, nelson (my top 3 D choices), and then whoever is the best cb in the draft as my 4th choice. (leon hall may not necessarily be the best cb for us)

One the offensive side I'd pick Joe Thomas if available and IF he really would be a good fit for our team. Then either Peterson (I worry about his long term health/injury) or a distant marshawn lynch (who actually may be better for us than peterson)

Not a bad mock by that guy. Did i read that correctly that Troy Smith would fall to the 2nd round? hmm I might like that as well.

Landry/Nelson/Branch in '07~!!

6. TEXANS Alan Branch DT Michigan Junior
The 6-foot-6, 320-pound run stopper is just what the Texans need. Put him on a defense that added Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans, and you have one of the more promising young units in the league.

Hmmm under there scenario I just might have to drink very heavily befor the draft. Like Branch. JT goes off the fifeth pick, that'll kill me.

And YTF, that's two of us that dissagree with you assements on JT and Branch. Must be a conseracy huh ?

Mock drafts are like Christmas advertisements, they start earlier and earlier each year.

If Cleveland really wants Troy Smith, they could easily trade down for those wanting Joe Thomas or AD. It's a great situation for them.

I personally think Weaver plays his best football at DT.

If it were up to me we address our DT situation in FA and hope Gains Adams is there when the Texans draft and move Weaver inside. Having another stud at the end position will take pressure off Williams, not to mention having a pass rush will take pressure off our secondary.

And I personally, respectfully disagree. I like Smith's rotation. Unless you know something about a Peak/Babins deal ? Weaver is staying where he is. Going to have to do something with Peak and Babs.

this will significantly change once the underclassman declare for early entry, deadline coming up Jan. 15th :)

Branch is the best inside tackle prospect in a while.

Gaines is a slightly smaller version of Mario Williams.

I actually like the hell outta this guy. He would fit perfectly in this line. I have been telling all my buddies that we will probably go DT or CB, and that matters where a RB or 2 fall, and how low we move down after the win against the Brownies. The lowest we can go is 10. This guy was a RB in HS, and he has raw athletic talent. For 6-6, and 320, he will constanly take on double teams next to Mario. There is no way they can double Marion and him. I say good pick. Thumbs Up here!!!!:ok:

Alan Branch is sounding real good. Hopefully he is as tough as Mario and has a great combine. Our D-Line is going to be stacked next year. But would we rather have Alan Branch or Gaines Adams?

Agreed. If he falls to nine, he is thier best option. JMHO. McClain says however...it's not a defensive player. Praying someone over there hasn't fallin in love with Ginn Jr. That would be a true reach. But not quite as bad as a spending a first on a QB who is in all propability, going to drop into the second.

I am thinking it is Lynch. A back that can run in the zone blocking scheme, good receiver out of backfield, and will (or can) block. Don't say that he doesn't draft backs in round 1, when we all know he tried to get back in the first to draft D. Williams.

the Texans ownership refuses to kick Carr to the curb & seems hellbent for the election to give David upgrades, they would probably go Peterson or Lynch whoever is available or a speedy hot up-coming WR (does anyone remember two years ago it was Troy Williamson but the Vikings used the 7th pick on him).

thats McNair, Kubiak does have some ownership in the equation too since he signed off on the three year extension. but c'mon lets finish the defense while we can, just take our franchise FS in 1st like Nelson then with 2nd draft the best CB available, OLB/OT/DT in 3rd rd. would love Michael Turner the RB from San Diego to be our big free agent aquistion.

I would like to see them finish the defense off also, but I was commenting on them saying that McClain knows that they are going offense.

I wouldn't mind Turner, but he is a RFA, and could cost too much to get.

There's absolutely no way that McClain knows that the Texans are going offense. He can speculate of course, but I'm sure Rick Smith/Kubiak aren't sure of what they are doing themselves.

I'm sure he has his sources as a few people on this board have. that being said a blanket statement that the Texans are going offense represents only a desire. my assumption is they will take who ever they graded out the highest who is available that fills one of the big pressing needs. right now we have a list of RB & OT as primary offensive needs with QB a huge question mark that will depend on Kubiaks evaluation after the season is completed.

defensively the needs are a CB, FS, DT & OLB. project away but none of us know how this offseason plays out. the top QB, RB & OT will all be taken by the time the Texans pick, to me that makes going offense less likely, well at least if they draft bpa. the Texans might have a shot at the best DT in Branch (if he declares) or Gaines Adams, they would be the two longshots however. that leaves the Texans with the possibly of taking the top CB or FS prospect, as well OLB in the College game today who is draft eligible.

lets see what unfolds but the Texans should remain in a fluid state without pre-set conditions to interfere with building this franchise into a winner :)

I think that picking up alan would be great. Our defensive line would be great. However, I do think that they will most likely take there time with this draft. I don't know which way they are going to go. I would love to see Hawaiis QB come in to the draft(I think that hes a sophmore). 5000+ passing yards this season. A Carr trade would be nice too. I don't what is going to be done, but I am excited and I can't wait until next year.

Well as far as the Titans go that guy is way off base. We have 2 great linebackers in Bulluck and Thornton, Sirmon will probably go but we have the guy who played behind Mario at NC State, Stephen Tulloch, to replace him.

As happy as Kubiak and staff are with Maddox and with Travis Johnson, Payne and Dalton on IR along with Thomas Johnson, Killings, Cochran and Bulman active, DT does not appear to be the highest priority. Take into account that Branch is 3-4, 2 gap DT who does not play in the three technique, Branch would not appear to be the highest priority. Also when you take into consideration Lee Evans and the numerous other times the secondary was burned, the defense weakest link is not DT.

We got it
texian, You want Leron ...at all costs. Very foolish.

It is not that I am against a DT but I think we would be better served by taking penetrating DTs like Dorsey 59 tackles, 8.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks; Tyler 49 tackles, 11 for loss, 3 sacks, or Okoye 49 tackles, 12 for loss, 6 sacks vs Branch, a clogging 3-4 NT, 22 tackles, 5 for loss and 2 sacks.

With Maddox's strong play I just think DT will be the play.
